'I got so damn sick and tired of hearing, "Patrick Stewart doesn't like the shape of his head..."'
Some excerpts from the Star Trek Writer's Roundtable, one of the Pro2Pro Roundtables that TwoMorrows Publishing puts out. Various Trek comic book writers discuss the hassles and difficulties of doing licensed comics for a TV property...

This first part is in response to the question of, "What do you find the largest challenge in adapting Star Trek from television to comic books?

Jumping forward a bit... We're still on the same question.

This next part's in response to, "Can you compare what it was like writing
Star Trek for different companies?" (As you probably notice by now, I'm cutting out huge chunks of the roundtable.)

Is this technically allowed? It does have Peter "Asshole" David involved.

It also doesn't have a comic page scanned (as such)

Right on both points. It's an interesting read, mind you, but I'm not sure this is the place for the post as it is.

It's an article about comics from a magazine about comics from a publisher that specializes in magazines about comics. I didn't see how it's any less legal than one of DiDio's DC Nation pages or a Wizard article, both of which I'm almost positive I've seen be as the entirety of posts.

Only in terms of legality requiring: "Each post must have at least one image scanned from a comic". technically the cover image within the scans could count, I guess.

It's the combination of that and the PAD content which makes it borderline.

I can see that. Would it help if I incorporated more of the accompanying images from the article (stuff like the Adam Hughes drawing of Picard) and snipped out the PAD segments?

I think that would certainly help (especially cropping the PAD content). Simply including a scan from a comic, even one panel, would be enough to make it legal anyway. It's not really a big issue, it's just anything PAD related makes me skittish lately.

Isn't unpublished art by pros legal? How does the Captain Picard commission by Adam Hughes not count? Admittedly, it only got included accidentally because I was too lazy to white it out like I did the other images. Also, you can only see part of it. Okay, so maybe that's not the most convincing argument after all...

Well, I suppose, but since TwoMorrows is offering it for free, I'm not sure on what grounds he can complain. I mean, if the copyright holder is okay with it...

My goodness, sorry it took me so long to respond. Your reply got lost in my inbox. I'd prefer if we could edit it, but unfortunately IJ doesn't allow it. So we'll let it stand as is, with our conversation here to note its inappropriateness.

I think this post is a great read; if it gets bounced, you could put it up on dreamwidth's [info]startrek and I'd love to host it.

I've read TOS comics that make the source material seem like the dullest thing imaginable and Voyager comics that make the source material seem fresh and thrilling. Both are wrong.

Heh. Mike Barr just became my hero.

Ah, yes, the difficulty of reconciling the discrepant visual conventions of live-action drama and exaggerated superheroics. I'm getting horrific flashbacks to the first Star Trek/X-Men crossover, here.

To be fair, if you put T'Pol next to, say, Huntress... it might be hard to tell the difference.

It's not that there can't be any overlap - in fact, the follow-up to this story has an artist who does an absolutely brilliant job: Wolverine is buffer than Riker and Picard, but Nightcrawler isn't, Worf is bigger than anyone else on either side except for Colossus, etc. The Trek characters even look recognizable without sticking out or looking traced.

It's just that this particular penciller (Marc Silvestri, I think) didn't even try to create any kind of stylistic harmony.

A sample page from the aforementioned follow-up. That's how you do it right.

Sweet Jesus could they have made Piotr look any stupider being that big (though I'm amused in light of the conversation just how statically posed the Trekkers are compared to the X-Men.

Even though I'm no less resentful toward PAD than anyone else here because of past events, I have to admit that he's right about Trek comics that can't convincingly reproduce the characters' likenesses. Even though I'm a Trek fan of the earliest extraction, and a comics fan for almost as long, I've never liked Trek comics because the characters didn't look much like they did on screen and quite often the other visual references (ships, equipment, etc.) were completely wrong.

I confess that though I'm a Trek fan, I've never really gotten into the comic adaptations. This article now has me curious about the Janeway=Jean art the guy's referring to - anyone know what book they're talking about, or have a page to post?
