Atomic Robo vs. Dr. Dinosaur: Meta! Machine guns! Totally metal!
You know what we haven't had yet on Scans Daily 2.0? Atomic Robo, that's what. This needs to be remedied, stat! [info]dejadrew's awesome Captain Raptor post earlier this week resulted in the mighty Brian Clevinger, the writer of Atomic Robo, linking me to one of the stories from the Atomic Robo Free Comic Book Day issue.

This beautiful gem of a tale is titled "Why Atomic Robo hates Dr. Dinosaur."

Yes. You read that right. Dr. Dinosaur.

And lo, it was AWESOME.

The story is a flashback to 1999. Our titular (and marvelous) hero Atomic Robo finds himself on Taravai Island in French Polynesia.

Things aren't going well. Why? Because he's lampshading and littering meta all over the landscape with a sapient dinosaur. A sapient dinosaur with a MACHINE GUN.

Yes. That was a time traveling dinosaur with a rocket launcher.

But it's really the spatula and ice cooler that make Dr. Dinosaur rocket into the heady heights of "so awesome that awesome broke."

You can read this enthralling tale in its entirety right here for free as the gentlemen behind Atomic Robo have thoughtfully posted it on their website. When I got to the last page, I was literally weeping in laughter. This was easily the best thing put out by anyone on FCBD.

I really urge anyone who hasn't yet picked up issues of Atomic Robo to give it a try. It tends to sell out quickly, though, so get hopping to your LCS on Wednesdays!

I say we need a Dinosaur Week on [info]scans_daily. Have we had one yet?

Loooove Robo so, so much. It's the best.

ALSO. Dr. Dinosaur is going to feature prominently in volume 4 of AR!

Yes, I saw that Brian wrote about that, and I cannot WAIT. More Dr. Dinosaur. I kept randomly waking up last night, thinking of this story, and cackling hysterically. My downstairs neighbor was very amused.

I keep wanting to do Robo posts, but I can never figure out what to post so as not to be totally spoilery. Might post the Rasputin mini, though.

I had a very hard time picking what to post just from this nine-page story. I kept wavering between "no, don't want to spoil it! Just give them teasers!" to wanting to post the entire thing. That's typically what happens when I read Atomic Robo.

Dr. Dinosaur: Greatest character or greatest character?
He really needs a pair of teeny tiny glasses though, to make him look more distinguished. He's a doctor, after all.

The last page of that story totally killed me. How can Atomic Robo contain so much awesome and not instantly vaporize all inferior comic books in it's vicinity?
Is it because of crystals? I like to think so.

Of COURSE it's because of crystals! Crystals: the new Deus Ex Machina, amirite?

I would just like to add that Dr. Dinosaur has a fire extinguisher. He's such an efficient camper/saurian hegemonist!

Oh my goodness, Doctor Dinosaur has some marvelous expressions. I would not have thought that a dinoface could do peeved disdain, but I would have been plain wrong.

And he's wearing a backpack! ^-^!

Huh, I had thought Atomic Robo was really dark. Am I getting it confused with something else, or is this story atypical of the series as a whole? From this preview, it looks like something I might want to check out, but for some reason I thought it was "dark and edgy"?

You are totally confused with something else. It is hilarious and awesome. I highly, highly, highly recommend it. It is my only must-read. Features Nazi mecha, mummies, eldritch horrors, and sapient dinosaurs.

"Mammal robot!" THAT is brilliant. I mean, technically he IS a mammal robot - he's a robot designed in the form of a human, which is a mammal, therefore he is a robot mammal - but still, it's funny! True AND funny!

Dr. D. & Robo

As the co-creator of Atomic Robo I fully endorse this probably-illegal re-posting of my work. (Although this and last year's FCBD stories are free online at www.nuklearpower.com anyway.)

Daily Scan is an excellent way to expose people to new material. I saw something else involving dinosaurs and space pirates on here yesterday and purchased both the books for my daughter . . .and me.

Feel free to put whatever snippets (snippets mind you) of Atomic Robo up on DS that you deem scan-worthy.

-Scott

Thank you, Scott! Brian and I occasionally chat over on LJ, and you guys totally rock. Thanks for the support of Scans Daily and for being total mensches in general. I posted a snippet of this story over on my LJ (kali921, same as here), and of course people loved it.

Glad to see you approve, sir! It's stuff like Atomic Robo that keeps me buying comics, keep up the great work!

And hey, feel free to create an account and join in on the madness. We'd love to have another relative comic big-wig adding his 2 cents to the pile =D

Dammit, I was going to post this *swears vengeance* Oh well, spreading the joy of Robo is always a good thing. A talking velociraptor loaded up with camping gear and a rocket launcher? THIS IS WHAT COMICS ARE FOR!

And I heartily endorse a Dinosaur Week. I remember snagging the first issue of DinoRiders a few years ago, I need to go excavate it...

Whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. There's a DinoRiders comic?! Shit, I loved that stuff when I was a kid. Never had the toys but loved the cartoon, and envied others who had the toys and didn't appreciate them. Dinosaurs! With weapons! Animal based aliens. Rule of Cool indeed.

... And now Atomic Robo goes into the buy-list.

I had the T-Rex, Triceratops, Pteranodon, and a couple of others. Unfortunately while I was relatively gentle with my toys compared to most kids (especially considering I was about 4-5 when I got them), pieces still got lost and broken. Still kept the dinos, though.

As for the comic, not too much other than the establishing origin story happens. And even though it has the Rex on the cover in full battle gear, it only shows up in the *second* issue, which I don't have.

Atomic Robo would really, really, like to be able to drink heavily. After fighting dinosaur who are also doctors, then turning around and fighting doctors who are also dinosaurs, you can see him at some point sitting down and going, "I would, at this point, like to get wated beyond all belief. And I can't. This is how I know God hates robots."
