Osamu Tezuka's "MW"
From 1976, here's MW, one of Osamu Tezuka's most adult works. Yuki and Garai were the only survivors of a poison gas leak (codenamed "MW") that annihilated an island's population. The two escaped before all evidence was obliterated in a government cover-up. Fifteen years pass, but Yuki and Garai are still bound by fate. Yuki is now a charming psychopath who preys on women and children and then uses his Kabuki-honed skills to impersonate his victims, and Garai is a tortured Catholic priest who is Yuki's confessor and lover.

Wow. The art style is so unmistakably Tezuka's, and I'm so use to Tezuka's younger-slanted work that I'm having some supreme cognitive dissonance right now!

Motto? This is uniquely disturbing.

Oh, I haven't even begun to post the disturbing stuff from this manga.

Heh. My first exposure to Tezuka was Phoenix, which I then followed up with Buddha. I didn't get around to Astro Boy until this year, so for me it was his kid stuff that took some getting used to.

No major cognitive dissonance, exactly. Tezuka's round, cartoony style is a natural fit for all ages work. But the tone and pacing was so different. I was used to the much slower, more reflective pace of his grown-up stuff. It's not that his children's stuff is less thoughtful, but the thinking is shorter and quicker and interspersed with ROBOT FIGHTS!! It zips along. There was a teeny bit of mental whiplash.

Wow. I had heard that Tezuka did at least one manga in every single genre, but I never imagined he did something yaoi-ish.
And those first pages... way beyond disturbing when drawn by the same man as Ribon no Kishi and Astroboy...

Wow, that's great homage to Aubrey Beardsley in the last panels!!

Ugh, THANK YOU. I just spent an embarrassing amount of time staring at those panels trying to remember where I had seen something like them before.

I read this last summer. Amazing! Really gave me a new respect for Tezuka's work, and forced me to look at him in a different light. As someone commented above, the dark subject matter takes a bit of getting used to.

Wow, he seriously drew everything. O_o

And those are some EPIC sideburns here.

Wow! That is some seriously creepy stuff! And as already noted by others, the trademark Tezuka style is quite bizarre juxtaposed with a story which involves the cold blooded murder of a child.

Anybody else reminded of Tenma and Johan from "Monster"?

'Mein lieber Dr. Tenma
Sehen Sie mich!
Sehen Sie mich!
Das Monstrum in mir wird explodieren!'

Maybe a little.

ETA: Stupid typos

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Yuki was responsible for the gas leak.

And I'll counter-guess, and say Garai. Priests in manga who used to be big bad men is practically a trope of it's own. It'd also explain how he can't bring himself to judgment of Yuki.

That's one thing Yuki isn't guilty of, surprisingly.

There was a discussion of yaoi on another message board, and one woman said she enjoyed it as a teenager because it dealt with various dark aspects of sex, but (because it was between men) it kept things at an emotional distance where it didn't hit too close to home. So it was "safe" to read.

I love this fucked up thing. And they're making a live action movie out of it! I don't normally get excited about comic books being made into movies, but it'll be starring a crush of mine, the talented and attractive Tamaki Hiroshi, as Yuki. Good times.

Wow, I didn't know there's a movie on the way. I hope it makes it stateside, if they don't water it down. This is some crazy shit.

wild guess... why Garai is unaffected by the nerve gas in the first place? That made me a bit stumped

keep in mind, it's time to create a fashion statement with your cheap watches !Another important thing to consider is the movement of the replica Chanel . Movement determines the accuracy of the replica IWC .
