STUMBO THE GIANT

Stumbo the giant was one of Harvey Comics' rarities in that he didn't have a whole line of books centered around him (even Little Dot carried several series at one time), he just was sort of always around in the back pages of the other characters books; usually Hot Stuff's or Wendy's.
Another oddity is that he actually had a recurring villain (instead of Richie and Casper's never-ending supply of baddies), Doctor Cesspoole. Memorable, but certainly not the greatest villain in comics, as you can see in this example from HOT STUFF #176, December 1990.....

Maybe the evil skull faced mad scientist should try and destroy a town that isn't protected by a guy WHO CAN TAKE HIM OUT WITH A STRAY TOENAIL.

I mean Luthor, Osborne, Joker, they all live in the place they try and conquer. They can't help but tussle with their respective capes. You can just walk away, find another town without a resident giant and conquer it.

I would die laughing if their was a silverage story where Supes uses his Super-toenail clippings to foil Lex.

I remember this story. His skinless face terrified me at four. However, it also made it easier a few years later to deal with Colan in TOD, as half his vampires looked just like this.

I must say, the mere fact that Stumbo has a recurring supervillain as his adversary makes him immensely more likable to me, compared to the vast majority of other Harvey characters. A hero is defined by his villains, as they say, and Dr. Cesspoole is a fairly engaging nemesis. And Stumbo himself is interesting, as well - a benevolent giant protecting a town full of regular-sized people has a good deal more in the way of story possibilities than the usual 'cherubic figure with bizarre obsession runs amuck' situation that was otherwise omnipresent in Harvey comics.
Incidentally, is anyone else hearing Cesspoole's voice as being that of Boris Karloff? I just think he seems like the sort of character for whom those deep, sinister British tones would fit perfectly, particularly given his skull-like features, which certainly LOOK like something out of an old horror movie. Also, note his masterly use of understatement - "How I DISLIKE Stumbo for always interfering with my plans for taking over Tinytown!" Not hate - dislike. STRONGLY dislike, we might infer. If that isn't old-school British aristocracy talking, I don't know what is.

Foiled by a toenail clipping, that's got to be a low point that you don't bring up during the annual mad scientist convention.

"How I dislike Stumbo..."

That's some awfully strong language you're using there, Dr. Cesspoole.
