Black Cat goes from dethroning moment of suck to crowning moment of awesome in one panel
Since today I’m posting the next installment in my fanfic about what would happen if Spider-Man got back together with Black Cat due to the events of One More Day (answer: DRAMA!), I thought it would be a good time to post one of my favorite Black Cat moments. Synergy and all that.
Black Cat is a funny character, because unlike Catwoman, who gets some respect as part of the official OTP, Felicia Hardy is almost a punching bag. The character keeps getting hit by retcons, bad plot developments, and... just really awful costume changes. Then no sooner has a new writer come along and gotten her back on track then she gets derailed again, sometimes by the same writer even. So to spotlight some of Black Cat’s untapped potential, an OOC derailment and an awesomely in-character canon-fix.
For the record, Black Cat has been stealing famous romantic artifacts like a sculpture of lovers and "the only known love letter written to Paris by Helen of Troy". Spider-Man tracks her down to her hideout, where the issue chooses to deal with all their fun subtext in an... interesting way.
Why hello there, icky Freudian subtext. How are you? Still insulting and unentertaining?
That was Amazing Spider-Man 205. Now let's skip ahead two years to ASM 226.
…"he’d stuck one of his spider-tracers to me"…
You don’t say…
So Felicia, you managed to set up a prison break AS YOU WERE BEING ARRESTED, AND floated the idea of a hook-up with your future boyfriend. Looks like you’ve gone from AN HERO to A SUPERHERO.
As for why Felicia had clippings of Spider-Man pasted to her wall… look, do you want not-crazy Black Cat or not?
The rest of the issue is pretty fun too, with Peter and Felicia chasing each other in circles while considering the possibility of a relationship and, naturally, stealing from the "Maggia" before deciding to give it a go.
Somewhere, a Bruce/Selina shipper is grinding his teeth in frustration.
