Webcomic: Maliki
Sitting at home with H1N1 (no, really), I thought I'd provide some more French bande-dessinée for your enjoyment. Today you're getting a taste of one of my favourite webcomics, Maliki.

Maliki is by one of the artists working on the Wakfu TV series, which sadly isn't available in English yet. There's a few fansubs out there if you're inclined to search, and Akama says they're planning to release an English version any day now...

In any case, the webcomic concerns a somewhat elfin girl living in what I think is Paris, and doing the same job as the artist. She goes to work like everyone else, has friends, enjoys a computer game now and then, and like everyone else she has friends, cats, a supernatural, demon-hunting double and...wait, what?

So the world of Maliki is a little...different from our world. She has her cats as I said, and a Chinese girl who just sort of appeared one day, and Savage Ladybird, an incredibly powerful, but very sweet and catlike, double that resides within Maliki and can come out as a separate person. She doesn't have a mouth so can't speak, and her worldview is wonderfully simple. There's another creature like her named ElectroCute, who we learn has continued on after the human she was bound with died, plus another occasional character who I think is the daughter of Satan or something, except Satan runs a two-bit graphic design business. I'm a little fuzzy on that part.

But then, the whole strip is daily life with a somewhat off-kilter twist, as Maliki brings in spring with a paintbrush, or goes digging clams with Skeletor, or reveals what really happens to confiscated shampoo at the airport. It's great fun, and the language barrier really isn't a hindrance despite taking a few minutes to puzzle out some of the jokes.

So here's the strip that got me onto the comic in the first place, linked by the guys at Three Panel Soul:

I love the gag about her not having a mouth, so drinking really isn't an option. Her shoes are also little semi-autonomous critters in their own right, as we've seen them devour a croissant in one strip.

Translations by me, apologies if they're a little off. I'm not terribly good at it. I also had to split the image up do TinyPic could handle it, so there's a bit of a stutter at one point. Sorry about that, I couldn't find a way around it.

So for contrast, here's one of the most recent strips. Again, with my translations:

Hee! I can totally identify.

Sorry to hear about the flu. Hope you get better soon.

They think it's going to hit the area where I live around one or two weeks time too. Hoping that I'll manage not to catch it, but I invariably do get hit every time influenza passes around here so I've stocked up on flu/cough/pain medication and tissues. Now I just need someone to pamper me while I waste away...

Thanks for the translation also, 'twas funny. And I can relate too, though our old cat usually took possession of my lap and kept pushing up to my arms when I tried to play.

We're pretty much the first place in Canada to get it seriously. Every case at the children's hospital so far has been H1N1, not a single case of seasonal. So that pretty much says it all.

Maliki's observances about her cats are spot-on. Including the puking on clean things and having to sit on paper, no matter where it is.

I'm sorry to hear that you're sick and wish you a speedy recovery.

That first one is pretty cute. I love the effect of someone jumping up with so much force they crack the pavement.

Good luck on a speedy recovery. I have just the regular flu, but being forced to stay home as my work is unable to function with someone coughing/sniffling around them and leap out of their chair at body noises.

Cute comics for a musty day!

Eeee, this comic. Three Panel Soul got me into it too. I love the assorted strips about the oddities of her cats.

Was it Fleya got possessed by the spirit of Odin?

That one, and then I also liked the ones about how they literally have to be with her all the time when she's home, and the one about how they interfere with drawing (because God, can I attest to that one. Three art students and two cats in a flat, and the cats won every time), and the one about nasty eating habits, and the laser pointer... on second thought, pretty much any strip about the cats.

I was actually debating which one of those to put in, the current one or the last one you linked to. I so adore that "secret heroic life of Fleya" strip.

Oh, and I got it wrong. It was Feanor, the spacey one, who got possessed by Odin, not Fleya. I always get the names mixed up.

I shouldn't find that demon girl hot, and yet...

*coughs*

Sorry to hear about you being sick. Just watch out, and make sure you cover your bacon!

Lady is adorable. Or do you mean the Satan's daughter character?

Yeah, that's Savage Ladybird, or Lady for short. She's fantastic. Essentially, she's one of the cats but humanoid and amazingly powerful.

Thanks! It's not bad yet, but I'm in the early stages. I expect by the weekend I'll have a full-blown fever and all the rest.

The language barrier IS a hindrance for me, but that's probably because I'm a wordy sort of a person, and tend to go for the language first. As a result, I find it incredibly frustrating to have something readable in front of me that I can't, y'know, READ.
Still, the artwork is very nice, and what I COULD understand of it was pretty funny. Any chance of a few more translations?
Oh, and sorry you're sick. 'Tis the season, unfortunately - hope you feel better soon.

Trouble with translating this one over, say, Spirou or Navis, is as a webcomic it uses a lot more colloquialisms that are harder to puzzle out. So since I'm not a native speaker and am dependent on translation software, dictionaries, etc., I'm still left guessing a bit. But sometime when I've got some time I might give it a go, I dunno yet.
