Well, Ares is doing a really good job of making Athena sound great.

Aaaaah makes sense then.

Well then it sort of makes sense then. Ares is basically all about glory. Yeah you'll die, but you'll be remembered as a Rambo level badass who took on armies by yourself.

Too bad that in the real world, War doesn't favor the rampaging badass who charges armies on his own. It favors the strategic planner. Wars aren't won by force, after all. They're won by logistics.

That's probably why in the original myths Athena was Zeus' top adviser and Ares was a whiny little bitch who ran away crying the instant he actually got hit in a fight.

It is an interesting split though. Athena is the goddess of commanders, of how war is fought. Ares is the god of fighters, how war is on the battlefield. No matter how well planned or how good an army, down in the trenches it's always going to be Ares domain.

Though on the upside, he did sleep with Aphrodite. Course Hephaestus had a few things to say about that.

That was always the Athenian metaphor for war, to me.  Attractive, loud, blustery, infantile.

Well in his own mini, Ares was shown as the Greek god who was willing to vary the most from tradition to accomplish his goal, albeit with added destruction.

He was for all intents and purposes their best tactician against an unknown foe because his line of work meant he couldn't get suckered into tradition and stagnation.

As I understand it Ares was never really worshipped by the Greeks so much as he was sort of tactfully avoided. If you offered a prayer about him in battle it was usually that he keep the hell away from your battle, because he wasn't so much the god of war as he was the god of mindless destruction.

Hades wasn't so bad, actually. One has to worry more about Zeus. And to avoid pissing him off was to worship him.

Don't worship them because they deserve it, worship them because they're GODS. :D

I don't think the myths are actually that representative of actual greek worship. Take Hera for example, in the myths she's mainly just an angry bitch, in the actual worship she's fairly central.

Sort of depends. Our understanding of Greek mythology has a heavily Athenian bent, them being the chaps most likely to record this sort of thing in the arts. If Sparta had been more concerned with posterity, we might have more stories about what an awesome guy Ares is.

One account by Pausanias (the one from Anatolia, in his 'Description of Greece') mentioned that the Spartans had a chained statue of Ares just outside the city, with the idea being that the martial spirit and victory were never to leave Sparta. He also mentioned something about the sacrificing of puppies to Ares. So the Spartans like him, even if nobody else did =P

And a mention by the poet Tyrtaeus (lived in Sparta, but no real consensus on his origin, possibly from Laconia): "I am a squire of the lord of war, Enyalius (byname for Ares in Sparta), and I understand the lovely gift of the Muses."

We do have some archaeological remains of religious beliefs and practices from the Spartans themselves, but IIRC, it's mostly remnants from the worship of Artemis-Orthia.

Your point still stands though. Tis a pity that even the perioeci didn't bother to record the culture of Sparta and Laconia, since the Spartiates themselves obviously wouldn't.

If I understand correctly, Athena would be also more likely to be worshipped by the higher military ranks, Ares by the common soldier, so again, Athena's guys would be more likely to leave traces of their worship and opinions of the Gods.

I wonder if Ares is going to be depicted as competent and skilled, as opposed to, ya know, almost every depiction of him in myth and comics so far.

So far, all he's done is act like Wolverine with an axe and super strength.

I think that's always been the point about Ares. He's most emphatically NOT the god of strategic leadership and good command. He's the God of Warriors. The kind who go in and get their hands dirty.

He's been depicted as a very competent and skilled warrior, with a certain amount of cunning. I've been really enjoying his depiction in Herc and Secret Warriors and War Machine.

In Hercules, he got trashed each time he fought Herc. In War Machine, he unleashed a techno-biological agent because he was impatient and got himself infected.

So...where were those cunning depictions? ;)

[info]va1tyr

Yeah, he pretty much always loses to Herc. Being defeated by Herc does not make one not-skilled in combat. I maintain the Hydra blood thing was reasonably cunning, and only foiled by the Black Widow knowing her Greek myths.

His unleashing the techno-biological agent has nothing to do with his skills or competence. He quite clearly did it for the lulz, and there were indeed lulz.

Because if the gods were allowed to just run rampant however they wnted Earth would have been rubble long ago. Plus, if she didn't give a damn about humanity she wouldn't have bothered teaching them anything.

It doesn't seem from this like he's running rampant reducing the world to rubble; and while she may be concerned by humanity, individual humans probably don't matter much to her.
