Thor and Superman
Greetings True Believers! I have been inspired by a Thor badassery post down the page. And since I was reading the excellent Busiek/Perez JLA/Avengers mini and I thought I'd post the the equally excellent Supes/Thor interaction. Enjoy!

Big Bads Krona/Grandmaster have pitted the Avengers and the JLA against each other.

They meet up on Marvelearth. The JLA think the Avengers are loser noobs and the Avengers think the JLA are engaged in epic dickery. (Everyone's minds are being fucked with.)

Supes claims the Avengers are a danger to their own world.

I love that thunder panel and WW's "WTF?" moment.

Now Thor sez "hello"

Caitiffs? I'll admit I had to look it up. It means coward or wretch. The more you know!

Metron and the Grandmaster send the two teams on the multiverse's craziest scavenger hunt. They fight over items in both universes. The final item is the infinity cube in The Savage Land. It's a Meta-Human Stand-off and finally Scarlett Witch is all like, "You dickless wonders gonna let these pricks flex nuts on our turf? Get the fucking cube!" And then it's on.

It's soooo on.

I like Thor's "Jackal!" lines.

The next page is perhaps the most awesome one in the book. It's not just his godhood or powers. It's the fact that after Steve, Thor has the most FB and MySpace friends. So you know what happens when you fuck with Thor?

INSTANT FLASH-MOB!

Later the teams, uhh.....team-up to take down Krona. They have to fight pretty much everyone. And Thor gives Supes Asgardian respect-knuckles.

The battle is won of course. Then Thor and Supes bond over the hammer.

This was my favorite Marvel/DC crossover.

I don't necessarily believe Thor should have won---Superman does have super-speed too, he could have gotten in a thousand blows when Thor did one---but I do believe his weakness to magic should not have allowed him to stop a direct blow from Mjolnir. I could see the fight going either way---if Superman uses his head and his speed and dodged direct blows from Mjolnir, he would win. (I do agree with Busiek that Supes is slightly stronger than Thor.) If Superman didn't realize the hammer was magic and calmly waited for the blow, the way he does bullets, Thor should have been able to take him out.

I also was annoyed the way Superman and Captain America felt ill-at-ease in the other's worlds. I could see it for Superman, perhaps, given his super-senses. But Cap? If anything, he's so used to the public idolizing HIM, he should have wanted to IMMIGRATE to the hero-worshipping DC-Earth. The most satisfying part of the interaction was the final one, where they finally got past their differences and worked together.

Still, WONDERFUL series. By far the best DC/Marvel team-up. I love the way the Avengers marvel at how hero-friendly DC-Earth is, the JLAers marvel about how dark and cynical Marvel-Earth is. And except for the Thor-Superman fight, I agree with every other choice, even the decision that although Batman is much smarter, that Cap has an edge on him, just a little, in hand-to-hand combat.

Superman's vulnerability to magic has never been treated consistently - sometimes he's only vulnerable to actual spells, like being petrified or mind-controlled, other times he can be taken out relatively easily by anyone with magically enhanced strength. I take it Busiek cleaves to the former interpretation, which I prefer as well.

I doubt Cap would have moved to DC-Earth because the people would have "worshipped" him there. It would be more of a case of which world needs him more. Frex, in MC2 Cap stayed on an alternate Nazi-ruled Earth after destroying that Earth's universe-hopping tech (to protect MC2 Earth) because freeing that world was the right thing to do.

I think it's funny that when the Avengers see how loved the DC heroes are (the Flash Museum, Superman getting an award from the UN, some girls winning a Supergirl fan club contest), they immediately conclude the Leaguers have taken over the world and make the people worship them.

And the Flash landing in the middle of a torches-and-pitchforks mob trying to murder a mutant kid probably wasn't the greatest introduction to Marvel-Earth.

"... that Cap has an edge on him, just a little, in hand-to-hand combat."

Where did it say this?

Batman simply acknowledges the man's high skill level ("You could beat me" is a different kettle of fish completely to "You will beat me") and then realises that rather than waste time with a pointless brawl, they could go do something intelligent and useful instead. *That's* the part I liked.

And I don't believe for a second that Cap has the edge on Bruce anyway. In WW2, some of the best fighters in the world weren't quite available as teachers, what with Japan and China being rather busy at the time.

Yes, but A: Cap has the slightly unfair advantage of the Super-Soldier Serum treatment, which gives him, I think, slightly higher strength and stamina than your average Olympic athlete, and B: Batman learned his skills through travelling the world and finding teachers. Cap learned his skills by being plunged into the thick of WW2. In his early career, Bats had to go up against street-level punks, crooked cops, and supervillains - Cap had to go up against trained soldiers, usually several dozen at a time, not to mention, of course, the likes of the Red Skull and Baron Zemo. A lot of time has passed, of course, so the scales are a bit more even now, but I don't think saying that Cap has a slight edge on Bats in hand-to-hand combat is particularly unfair. It's not necessarily saying that Cap would WIN, just that he COULD win.

Cap beat Prometheus after Prometheus downloaded Batman's skillset, remember, in the final issue.
