Thor and Superman
Greetings True Believers! I have been inspired by a Thor badassery post down the page. And since I was reading the excellent Busiek/Perez JLA/Avengers mini and I thought I'd post the the equally excellent Supes/Thor interaction. Enjoy!

Big Bads Krona/Grandmaster have pitted the Avengers and the JLA against each other.

They meet up on Marvelearth. The JLA think the Avengers are loser noobs and the Avengers think the JLA are engaged in epic dickery. (Everyone's minds are being fucked with.)

Supes claims the Avengers are a danger to their own world.

I love that thunder panel and WW's "WTF?" moment.

Now Thor sez "hello"

Caitiffs? I'll admit I had to look it up. It means coward or wretch. The more you know!

Metron and the Grandmaster send the two teams on the multiverse's craziest scavenger hunt. They fight over items in both universes. The final item is the infinity cube in The Savage Land. It's a Meta-Human Stand-off and finally Scarlett Witch is all like, "You dickless wonders gonna let these pricks flex nuts on our turf? Get the fucking cube!" And then it's on.

It's soooo on.

I like Thor's "Jackal!" lines.

The next page is perhaps the most awesome one in the book. It's not just his godhood or powers. It's the fact that after Steve, Thor has the most FB and MySpace friends. So you know what happens when you fuck with Thor?

INSTANT FLASH-MOB!

Later the teams, uhh.....team-up to take down Krona. They have to fight pretty much everyone. And Thor gives Supes Asgardian respect-knuckles.

The battle is won of course. Then Thor and Supes bond over the hammer.

This was my favorite Marvel/DC crossover.

He was worthy, re-read what Thor said

"A very few worthies have been allowed to overcome the spell, in desperate hours."

Superman being one of the few, he was worthy enough to overcome the spell in time of need and Thor knew that which is why he gave him the hammer. The fact that Superman couldn't lift it anymore is because there was no need for him to use it anymore.

Love Thor's face in the last scan (last panel) George Perez is good with expressions.

I also love how everyone ganged up on Supes after he took out Thor (League did go and defended him too though), you're right that Cap and Thor are two people you do not mess with because the Avengers will jump you like crazy.

And I agree! best crossover ever, wouldn't have minded some Spidey though.

Superman wielding Thor's Hammer and Captain America's shield is pretty awesome...

But would it still be enough to beat Batman?

:P

see above ;) but in all seriousness, there's a weakness to everything, and while I don't know much about either Thor's hammer or Captain America's shield, I have a feeling Batman would find the weaknesses in both of them...ahead of time.

This was my favorite Marvel/DC crossover.

Same here! It gets a lot of shit for being fanwank, or being too Silver Age-y, or too convoluted, or whatever. For me, it's pure superhero geek glee from start to finish.

Everyone else's mileage will vary, but honestly? I find "JLAvengers" one of my favourite comics of all time. It's just so... awesome. There's no other word for it. It's big and it's loud and Buseik does such an excellent job as story-teller it leaves me breathless.

(not to mention the moment where, as they all set out to explore the MU, Batman tells the rest of the League not to interfere, then spends 20 minutes beating the stuffing out of the Punisher, in a 'fight' that's so one-sided it happens off-camera and Plastic Man jokes about it afterwards)

I lean more towards DC anyway, so I was quite happy with how the JLA vs Avengers aspects played out (even though it pretty much ended as a tie, although the JLA won by plot-mandated technicality) -- except for that one bit. Thor should've beat Superman. Weaknesses to magic aren't great when you're fighting a god.

But that bit in book 4 when Superman charges into battle with Captain America's shield in one hand and Mjolnir in the other -- that's like porn for me. So it's all good, heh.

Man, this series weas awesome. Especially the covers. I remember the secondone had the two teams fighting, mostly with current members, but the back randomly had Black Panther kicking Blue Beetle's (Ted's) ass in among the other fights. I'll see if I can scan it in later.

I don't necessarily believe Thor should have won---Superman does have super-speed too, he could have gotten in a thousand blows when Thor did one---but I do believe his weakness to magic should not have allowed him to stop a direct blow from Mjolnir. I could see the fight going either way---if Superman uses his head and his speed and dodged direct blows from Mjolnir, he would win. (I do agree with Busiek that Supes is slightly stronger than Thor.) If Superman didn't realize the hammer was magic and calmly waited for the blow, the way he does bullets, Thor should have been able to take him out.

I also was annoyed the way Superman and Captain America felt ill-at-ease in the other's worlds. I could see it for Superman, perhaps, given his super-senses. But Cap? If anything, he's so used to the public idolizing HIM, he should have wanted to IMMIGRATE to the hero-worshipping DC-Earth. The most satisfying part of the interaction was the final one, where they finally got past their differences and worked together.

Still, WONDERFUL series. By far the best DC/Marvel team-up. I love the way the Avengers marvel at how hero-friendly DC-Earth is, the JLAers marvel about how dark and cynical Marvel-Earth is. And except for the Thor-Superman fight, I agree with every other choice, even the decision that although Batman is much smarter, that Cap has an edge on him, just a little, in hand-to-hand combat.

The collective "Oh, fuck, no!" from the Avengers may be my favorite panels in the whole thing, next to She-Hulk calling Wonder Woman "Star Shorts" as they head off to kick ass together.

The Thor vs Superman thing is interesting. You can't have Superman lose, as he is the reason that the Superhero genre even exists, so both DC and Marvel owe everything they have to him. Then again you have Thor, one of the archetypal characters in classical ancient mythology; a source of literature which is commonly held to be the inspiration behind most modern superhero comics. Thor was one of the most popular figures in all of the ancient Greek and Norse tales of superhuman beings, and without their influence on Western society it may have been possible that the concept of modern superhuman heroes, like Superman, may never have been thought of at all. It's almost a 'What came first, the chicken or the egg?' argument.

However, in terms of a fight, that is a magic hammer and should have exploded Superman on sight. Also, for an opponent he describes as the toughest he has ever faced, he appears to take him down in a couple of panels. He seems to have forgotton about Doomsday too I guess. On the whole I enjoyed this issue though.

I love that page of all the Avengers diving to, uh, avenge Thor.

Really, I like characters who have riposo. Supes is more or less on that list, usually, but I don't find him specifically to be that interesting.

Still, the series as a whole looks pretty awesome.
