Sonic #200, or Robotnik is a mite bit unhinged...
There's no doubt that Sonic is an odd duck in the comic world. The comic's around for 15 years, and its creators have pretty much free reign (so long as they incorporate the latest additions to Sega's formally frontline franchise). I haven't regularly read Sonic since I was a regularly read TMNT Adventures, both of which followed a similar pattern (starting as silly fodder to keep the kids occupied till the next episode, gradually evolving into something with heavy plot and characterization), or at least they did until TMNT was canned (I can't help but wonder what TMNT would have been like if it also lasted 200 issues. Someday, I'll find that parallel universe, and read their comics!). Whenever the comic did get brought to my attention, it always impressed, which was the case when issue 200 was mentioned a while back.
We open in medias res, with Sonic and Dr. Robotnik facing down for the umpteenthing time. Robotnik is less than happy over the fact that he's been losing ground to a smartass hedgehog for a decade and a half. Meanwhile, Sonic is practically going through the motions.
Massive fight scene. Sonic decimates robot spider.
And so they do, although Sonic remains unsettled by his old enemy's fate. Snively, however, is only too happy to lock his uncle in a padded room, and begin his own unholy alliance with a character whom I am unfamiliar with (which might be a callback to the unprodued season 3 of the old Saturday morning cartoon?).
(I love how freaked out Sonic and Sally are at Robotnik. They can't quite focus on the fact that they've won.)
BONUS: Anyone know when new style Sonic went up against old potbelly-style Sonic?
DOUBLE BONUS: If you're interested in more things Sonic, check out these Noise to Signal essays, covering Sonic's history from the first prototypes to the most recent games. Good stuff.
