It sucked up the water in the river, so if it comes this way, the lagoon isn't going to be safe at all. But if I stay on the shore . . . there isn't anywhere to hide at all, and climbing up the sides in Pavo's colours . . .

[ the mud is cold and clammy around your most of you, and one could imagine that it might actually be nice and refreshing to be rolling around in on a hot day when one also isn't in immediate danger of death by trampling (or other means) by other very angry-looking things in the near proximity. ]
