[She considers places that are familiar to them, but she'd think that'd be too weird. But then again there are memories everywhere. Instead, she gives the address of a coffee shop near Wayne Tower.] Is Midtown cool?

An hour then.

[To say Stephanie was nervous was a bit of an understatement, and maybe she was kicking herself for trying to make plans with him in the first place. But, their last conversation had gone okay enough, and she truthfully wanted them to be friends more than anything. And, she was happy that he was happy, and that he'd found someone to make him happy when she had failed that mission miserably. All she wanted was for him to have good things in life. If that didn't include her? So be it. The nerves were still there though, and she would be lying if she said thinking about him didn't give her a slight ache in her chest.

She hadn't been in the Manor when she spoke to Eddie. In fact, she was as far from the Manor as possible. So, an hour was ideal time for her to drive from her location to midtown even with the traffic along the way. She'd been on a job interview, and it'd actually gone fairly well (as far as job interviews go). She hadn't been on one of those things in years, not since she first signed up for Doctors without Borders, and it was going to be weird to work in a place where the sun wasn't beating down the back of her neck, where she wasn't scrounging for supplies, and where starving children weren't breaking her heart. It was partially a placeholder until she could get back to the clinics, and partially something different that could be good for her and for everyone else.

Arriving at the coffee shop, she parked her car outside, still that same clunker she had when she started dating Eddie years before with bumper stickers and door colors that didn't match the rest of the paint job. The coffee shop itself was a little bougie, but still quaint and small. The smell of fresh coffee brewed on the spot and pastries filled the air, and she inhaled deeply before taking a seat at a table in the corner. Stephanie was still dressed for the interview. Instead of looking at the door in anticipation, she ordered a cappuccino and pulled out her tablet. As she looked down at the journal, her glasses kept sliding down her nose, causing little frustrated noises here and there as she adjusted them.]

[Eddie had spent the whole day getting stuff done in the Watchtower of all places. He had done the dirty work that the mobs needed from him, to prove he was one of them and then he took the rest of the day off to tinker with alien technology. The notion that he was still worthy of being called Justice League was funny to him at best, and sad at the worst. There was no such thing as a proud green bat anymore, there was barely a bat to begin with. There wasn't a league, either. Only this Watchtower, a last defense against a threat no one could handle through regular means. He was simply a crow watching the wall and he took it very seriously. The Watchtower would always be ready as long as he was there to take care of it. Maybe that was hero enough?

So, he had time for some coffee after chatting with computers he barely understood. Dressed as casually as he got these days, Eddie stepped into the coffee shop and looked for the woman he demanded a divorce from three years ago. No, he didn't know how long it had been for her, but he hoped it had been around the same amount of time. Enough to move on because they weren't good for each other. He wasn't sure if they ever were.

Eddie spotted her as she pushed the glasses up the bridge of her nose and walked over, pulling a chair out for himself with his usual grace.] You should really look into getting contacts. The Poindexter look is so not you. [He flourished his hand in the air, resting his arm along the back of his chair with a cross of his legs. All motion was fluid, perfect like a routine. Eddie had gotten his groove back somewhere along the way.] That's a Felix the Cat reference. Before your time. [He gave her the usual carnie smirk.]

[Stephanie looked up at him as her mouth twisted into a scowl that was clearly playful, and she scoffed a little with a roll of her eyes. Edges of her mouth curving up in betrayal.] I'm not a Poindexter! [A laugh.] I've seen that Felix the Cat movie with the bad animation and the weird fox song and the dumb princess [She grinned then, pushing her glasses to perch them on the top of her head before taking him in for a moment. Biting back a comment on how handsome he looked, she tilted her head and nodded at the waitress over Eddie's shoulder to call her over.] I don't think I missed a lot by not watching it. [Leaning back, she locked the tablet and waited for Eddie to order before adding on a piece of cake (chocolate of course) onto her own order. Her eyes narrowed with a smirk.] And I do not look like a Poindexter.

You're not winning any points by bashing Felix. [Eddie shook his head, not charmed at all by words like weird and dumb. He had a fondness for the cat and the name in equal measures. When the waiter came over he ordered a simple black coffee with a tiny bit of cream and then turned his attention back to her.] Well, I guess I'm just not used to seeing you in glasses. [He wasn't used to seeing her at all. Eddie felt removed, sitting across from her at that table. And, he was glad. He wasn't afraid of her anymore, didn't feel the need to dampen who he was or change masks to make her happy. Why? He just didn't care what she thought about him. It was apparent in how relaxed he was around her, which simply wasn't the case for a long, long time.]

So! [Eddie clapped his hands together and then rested them in his lap.] How are you adjusting to your old-new life here?

[She'd grown a little more thoughtless about word usage not being around him, but she was trying. Stephanie stumbled more often than not, especially in the last few (read: fifteen) years. Her smile softened to something more bashful, and she shook her head at herself.] Fair enough. Sorry. [And apologies came out so much easier nowadays. She was a lot less stubborn and a lot more prone to realizing when she messed up.] I'm just old now and blind as a bat, har har. I've got contacts, but this was all a part of a look today. [She waved her hand at her face, a teasing sort of smile before relaxing. Tilting her head, she rested her cheek against her knuckles as she looked at him for a moment. She wasn't as removed as Eddie was, and maybe that was going to be her downfall. But friends. She wanted to be friends. Or at the very least have a cordial relationship with him.]

Old-new life. [She sounded really amused, a smile coming up her mouth again, and it wasn't anything malicious at all.] Well, more new I guess, with everything that's going on in this city. [A smile then a sigh as she dropped her hand down.] I'm doing...well? Better than when I was last here for sure. [The coffees came, and she started to stir her cappuccino. Clink, clink of the spoon against ceramic mug, and she took a sip before continuing.] It's a little strange to come back here with so many things different, you know? I'm sure you know. Bruce being mayor, the family collapsed for good apparently. [A shrug, and she brushed it off, turning towards him instead with an encouraging sort of smile.] How about you? How are you doing here?

Oh? Did you talk to the rest of the family? [Eddie had only reached out to Bruce and Helena, one of which would never consider herself a part of the family. He raised his eyebrows in slight interest because frankly he wanted them to get back together, to support each other. Even if he and Selina would always circle the fence outside. They were simply the strays that got let in once and a while and he was starting to accept that.] You know, as a rogue I actually did my darnest to push that family apart with Hush. Who would have thought it was as simple as a failed marriage, a baby and some arguments over morality? Gee. It's so normal. [He smiled, amused and then looked around the room curiously. He tried not to mentally catalog how many people in that cafe owed the mob something, worked unknowingly under him or knew someone that was about to get hit. Welcome back, Gotham indeed.]

Oh, I'm good. I offered to help Bruce with the mayor stuff, but I'm much more comfortable playing with the families. Politics can be so cutthroat. [He waggled his eyebrows. Eddie's thoughts drifted to Muerte for a moment, as to if she was ever going to contact him for a second date or she was still feeling a little shy about the whole thing. But, that wasn't something to bring up to Stephanie. He glanced up as his coffee was brought to him and smiled oh-so charmingly at the waiter with a sweet thank you that could make anyone blush.]

Not yet. I spoke to Dick, and I get the feeling he's focusing more on having fun. Which you know, 19 year olds tend to do. Bruce has so much on his plate he can't even begin to keep all of us together. Jason, I'll hit him up soon. And Helena? [Steph shot him a look that expressed how much she knew Helena wasn't her biggest fan. She didn't even know if she should begin to cross that bridge with the baby Wayne. She'd try to feel the rest of the family out first before pursuing her at the very least. The blonde bat laughed a little more bemused, and she nodded.] I don't think anyone would have bet money on that. [Her glance around wasn't to catalog anyone, instead gather her thoughts on the facts of Gotham. To figure out what she could to acclimate. To figure out how to fit in in a city where she still felt a little out of place.] I just hope that there's some way to fix it. [Amused:] We're all victims of our stubborn hubris and selfishness. [And yes, she included herself in that.] Maybe we'll all wake up.

[She shook her head to clear it, then took another sip of her coffee as he made the waitress blush with a couple sweet words, and she couldn't help the tiny smirk across her mouth. She didn't elaborate at first, but surely he caught it. Instead, smirk still in place, she answered his wiggling eyebrows with a quirked one of her own.] You're working with Selina on that? [There wasn't real surprise, but she was still curious.] How is that going? [And then another sigh.] How do you think Bruce is doing with mayoral stuff? He seems dead-set on sticking to it, but I'm trying to talk to him about it.

I'm sure you being here will help things. [Eddie said honestly. He always thought she pulled the family together and if she wanted to, she could at least have it functional again. Still, if there wasn't a family to pull together, then what could she do? He blew on his hot coffee and then took a tiny, tiny sip.] If not? Maybe a family doesn't matter. I've always focused on it, always tried to create a family out of people I care about. But, it never works. Accepting that it can't work is a hell of a lot better than trying to force a square peg in a round hole. [Eddie had mourned the end of his marriage, the fact that he'd likely never have a child of his own. These were things he looked forward to, that he dreamed about with the woman across the table from him. But, he stopped himself from obsessing over it. He found things that were more suitable to the kind of man he was.]

That's right. I can't get into details, of course, ears everywhere. But, it's going just fine. I'm getting paid to do something I was planning on doing anyway. [Eddie didn't care about ethics or the law when rich people were driving cars so fast they hit women trying to cross the street to their minimum wage job. If the mob wanted to put a leash on them? If they wanted to drain their assets? Oh, Eddie was more than happy to help.] Bruce is going to run himself into the ground. I guarantee it. Hopefully, he won't need to take it out on anyone, but if he does? I don't mind being hung off the side of a roof or slapped around to quell a loved one's aggression. I've done it before. [A sharp smirk her way.] Selina won't be the first one he goes for if this all crumbles under him. It'll be me. And, I can take it.

[Steph went quiet for a moment as she listened to him talk about family, and she knew that it was probably still a hard subject for the both of them. It certainly was for her. All she wanted for years was a life and a family with the riddled man sitting with her, and it still hurt that it was never going to be a possibility for them. That she probably wasn't going to have another child either. That, hell, she might not even find another person to feel for the way she felt for Edward Nashton. But, she tried her best to push that aside.] Family's important. It's a matter of all of us realizing that we can all help each other, that we don't have to be bullheaded and destructive just because we're in pain. [And maybe there was a very blatant underlying meaning to her words. She knew that she fucked up their marriage. Her. Tragic events and PTSD or not, she'd ruined it. Stephanie had accepted that guilt and responsibility years ago in a medical tent in pitch darkness, mosquitos buzzing and too quiet nighttime allowing her to lose herself in her thoughts.] Maybe Gotham doesn't need a family, but we do.

[Shrugging, she flashed him a faint smile that said she was being silly, stirring her drink for a moment before nodding.] You don't have to tell me details. I know Selina's working...on things, too. [The Egyptian and weaving her way into the Falcones.] You don't have to tell me what you're up to though. [Her mouth curved up tentatively.] Am I allowed to tell you to be safe at least? Because I'm gonna tell you anyway. Be safe? [A stronger smile that dissipated immediately at his sharp smirk. The spoon going clink against the mug as she stopped stirring. Okay that stung, but sure. She deserved that, at the very least. A shake of her blonde head, and she continued on.] He needs to know that there'll still be people there for him at the end of the day. And Selina probably should be the one he goes to first, but you're right. [She rubbed her eye, smirking a little.] I'm trying to see if I can talk some sense into him, but he's more stubborn than all of us combined.

I hope when you say we you aren't including me. You need a family. I don't. [And, he leveled a look at her for the tone. Eddie didn't really approve of her obviously blaming herself for everything. Relationships weren't something you could tally up and blame couldn't exist when no one did anything really wrong. It just came down to Eddie feeling unloved, unwanted, and he didn't blame her for that. There were days when she would grab him by the hands and insist that he was everything, that he was the world, and he couldn't believe a word of it. They just weren't the same people they used to be when they first fell for each other. She'd find someone else. Someone who wasn't as sensitive, someone who wasn't so complicated.]

[Eddie took another sip of his coffee, this one longer and he watched her smile fizzle out. The sharpness needed to get out of his system, it was the only way he knew how to talk to her anymore, but it wasn't healthy. She was trying to be civil and when he reached down deep he only wanted to move past the bad feelings she gave him. For the most part, he had. He didn't love her anymore and that was always a small relief.] It won't work. All you can do is be there for him. I'm going to offer some aid, something so he can stay afloat with the mobs. I do want his way to succeed. I just don't believe in it.

It was more of a collective we. Only including you if you wanted it to. [Her voice almost went defensive, trying to assure him that she wasn't picking at scabs he didn't want her to. But she leveled a look right back at him, and he could tell that there was some bits of the little blonde bat he'd fall for years ago still there. Namely the stubbornness, the tendency to blame herself. It wasn't something she did readily anymore, but it still happened. And for now, she'd hold onto the blame for a while longer. It was easier to do that. She looked at him, blue eyes soft and a little sad. Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe she should have just let him be. Let him be happy with Muerte (her stomach, honestly, still lurched a little at the thought -- jealousy and, yes, hurt), and move on with her life. But, she really did believe they could be friends. And perhaps that was incredibly selfish of her to put on his shoulders, but she couldn't help trying. Stephanie Brown always wanted to try for things, to her own detriment.

Instead of bailing completely, just throwing money on the table like the urge in her chest told her to, she sipped her coffee too, letting the warmth burn her throat before setting it down and nodding.] I know it's not going to, but it can't help to try, right? [Maybe it would, maybe she would just back off.] I wish that it would work, but I just can't imagine it panning out. And, we need a Bat. This city needs a Bat. Don't you think? And he can't do both, he's going to kill himself trying to do both.

[Her cake came, and instead of diving right into it, she just picked at the frosting for a moment, popping each finger in her mouth in time. After a second, while drumming her fingers on the table:] I went on a job interview today.

[Eddie shook his head at her. He felt sorry that she clearly had some feelings left for him and there was so much hope that things could work out. The riddled man didn't share that feeling, he had moved on. That said? He had been there before, he had heard no from her a handful of times when his heart was completely vulnerable. Eddie felt sorry. But, no was all that he had left for her. No more of them, no more of her being his blonde bat. Being friends was possibly, but he wanted that limited, too. Stephanie had grown into a toxic force for Eddie and that much was very apparent.

But, he nodded at the suggestion that this city needed a bat. He had always believed that, even in his most neon green stages. Eddie rubbed his face and leaned back in his chair, slowly sipping his coffee.] Oh, where?

[Oh, she had no hope that things would work out. That they would be them ever again. She hadn't come back expecting anything really, even if it was true that she did harbor some feelings for him still. Had she known what Eddie was thinking or feeling right at that moment, she would have bailed immediately. If she knew that he wanted to limit even the possibility of friendship, fuck yes she would have bailed. She didn't want to cause him misery or discomfort or pain or anything she had done in the past. She didn't want to remind him of all the bad shit she had put him through. She didn't want him to hate her. It was woefully selfish of her to ask him here, she knew it in the back of her head, but she really just wanted him in her life. Whatever capacity that could be.

Another long sip of her cappuccino, and she leveled a look at him. A sort of hear me out first.] Arkham. [A beat. And then talking a little faster.] They gave me the job on the spot. I think it'll be good to have someone in there that can keep an eye on it, you know? And someone that isn't corrupt as fuck and just wants to dope people up instead of helping with problems. I know Crane is in charge, and of course that's worrisome, but like I told Selina already, I can handle him.

Arkham. [Eddie repeated with a surprised look on his face. He didn't doubt that she could handle Crane, but that place wasn't just one sadistic man on the top. Noo, it was turtles all the way down. Another sip of his coffee and he cradled it close to his chest as she explained, a thief finger tapping on the warmed cup. Amused:] That seems a little drastic, don't you think? I understand the need to go in there and make sure things are operating well, but it's not just Crane you have to worry about. There's the inmates, for one. I've personally driven a couple doctors crazy. Once I convinced a woman her three year old was in a riddle trap instead of a daycare while we were having a session. Another time I put a doctor in a straight jacket because each day I would carefully alter his office just so until his grip on reality collapsed completely. And, then there's the ghosts.

[Stephanie eyed Eddie warily after she finished talking, and she understood his concern. He knew better than anyone what it was like on the inside of that damn place. She'd only been in there a handful of times, and no one else on their side but Eddie had had extended stays. She understood his concern, she really did. But, her blue eyes went a little sharper regardless, and she frowned, pushing her drink aside.] I know Crane's not the only thing. You don't think I'm capable of dealing with the rest, do you? [She wasn't angry or needling, just curious. The deed was done already.] I need a job, and this is the perfect opportunity to keep an eye on everything. Bruce's hands are full with being Mayor. You're doing... your thing with Selina. This is when he takes advantage, isn't it? When we're all distracted and thinking about other things. [A sigh.] And I want to help those inmates, too. [He shrugged because it was true. The riddled man knew the blonde bat he divorced. This woman, though? Who had ten years to fix all the things she wanted to about herself? He didn't know her limits, he didn't know the exact place she kept her breaking point.] You're a grown ass woman. If you think you can work at Arkham, work at Arkham.

I'm going to. I just thought I should let you know. [She took a deep breath. A splash of doubt flickered over her face.] And to ask for your help. No one knows that place better than you. I've already told Selina, and I'm telling Bruce as soon as possible, so they know I'm going in, so if you're too busy- if you don't want to- [A noise escaped the back of her throat after a moment, and she rubbed her eyes wearily. That pain in her chest turned sharp.] I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked you here. It was selfish, and I'm sorry. It wasn't that he didn't believe she was sorry, they just didn't do anything for him.] Don't, Stephanie. It's fine. You can soul search and apologize all you want, but it's not going to change anything about me. [He set the coffee cup down and leaned forward:] You want to know what I think about Arkham? It's a place that can drive anyone insane. It's a place where you can never shake the wet and cold off. It's place where screaming is the only distraction you have from the worms crawling around in your own fucking head. [He slapped the table suddenly and what was left of his coffee spilled across the table. He stood up, grabbed a napkin and carefully wiped off his fingers.] Go ahead and work there, Stephanie. Help people. If you need assistance, you let me know. [He tossed the used napkin on the table and walked out the door before she could stop him.]
