It was the coldest night of the year in Beacon Hills and the power was out. Derek had no idea what was going on, but whatever it was, he was on edge. Kira wasn't responsible this time, but that didn't mean there wasn't some other supernatural creature out there with a plan and Derek wanted to be ready in case there was an attack.

Of course, it would be his luck that Lydia was at his loft when the power went out. She had stopped by to pick up something for Scott, who called immediately when the town was plunged into darkness and insisted that she stay put until they figured out what was going on.

Derek had a gas stove, at least, and he put on the tea kettle that he also owned, figuring that it would help them stay warm. "Do you want something with caffeine or without?" he asked.

Of all the places to be that night, of course she was at Derek's doing what was supposed to be a quick favor for Scott. She should've learned by now that nothing is a "quick" favor when it's for Scott, because something always throws a wrench in the gears. As far as she was concerned, she could have just gone back home, because it was could just be something normal. It could've just been a squirrel in a generator, for all she knew, but it was Beacon Hills and nothing was ever that easy. She lived all the way across town and there were too many traffic lights that would've been out to make it a safe trip, so when Scott told her to stay put, as much as she didn't want to, she grudgingly agreed because she might as well.

Lydia wasn't prepared for a power outage. Dressed in a black tank top with a coral-colored cardigan and a floral skirt, she'd expected to be in and out and back in her own home within half an hour and she hadn't expected for the heat to fall away from the loft as quickly as it did, when she realized she couldn't go, but of course it did because Derek didn't have any freaking furniture; it was just a huge, open space with no carpet and nothing to absorb and hold in the heat from being sapped away through the little drafts in the wall of windows.

Hugging herself to keep warm as she shuffled back and forth from one foot to the other in an attempt to ignore the goosebumps rising on her bare legs, she looked up when Derek spoke and shrugged a little. "Whatever, I guess. Do you have any green tea or anything?"

"Uh, I think so," Derek said. He wasn't really much of a tea drinker, but there were a few boxes of tea bags in the cupboard that he accumulated over time for various reasons. One of the boxes was green tea and he held it up, looking over to make sure it was suitable for Lydia.

He frowned when he noticed that she seemed cold. His own internal body temperature ran a little hotter than that of a normal human, so he didn't notice the cold as easily. He was also wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt, so he was more covered than she was.

"You can grab a blanket or something," he said.

It isn't loose leaf because of course it isn't. With a soft sigh and a weak smile, Lydia nods. "That's fine, thank you," she says. I could be home drinking fresh tea, Scott. Instead, I'm drinking probably stale Lipton's. At Derek's.

"Do you even own a blanket other than the one on your bed?" she wondered aloud, lifting an eyebrow. "Where...? I'm freezing," she added. If he did and he was willing to tell her where to find it, then she was absolutely going to take him up on that offer.

Of course Derek didn't have loose leaf tea. Or extra blankets. He was a minimalist. "What's wrong with the blanket on my bed?" he asked, opening the tea bags and dunking them into the hot water he poured into the mugs.

He wasn't going to let her freeze while she was stuck with him. No matter what people thought about him, Derek wasn't a cruel or mean guy. He just preferred to keep to himself and not care about other people. Caring about people was a surefire way to get hurt.

Wrinkling her nose, Lydia shook her head. For a grown ass man, Derek was such a boy. "Nothing," she replied. Except that you probably never wash it and you've probably had sex in it since the last time you've washed—you know what? Whatever, I'm freezing. Lydia tried to tell herself that maybe she was wrong and maybe he'd washed it recently and it wasn't teeming with sweat and God knew what else.

She made her way to his bed, pushed up against that wall of windows, and stripped the comforter off it, wrapping herself in it. "Thanks," she said, trying to keep the distaste out of her tone because he didn't have to let her tear up his bed just to keep warm. He didn't have to let her stay, no matter what Scott said; he could've sent her off without a word and she could've tried to navigate the roads with no functional traffic lights and make it back to her place just hoping that she wouldn't end up home alone when she got there.

Lydia didn't want to be here, but she didn't want to be out there alone, either. This was the lesser of two evils and if she was a jerk about it, he'd be fully within his right to send her packing.

"Sure," Derek said. It wasn't a big deal to him. Lydia was less annoying than Stiles at least. If he was stuck with Stiles, he might be tempted to let the kid freeze. Maybe that would keep his mouth shut.

God, that would be a nightmare. He shuddered and pushed the thought out of his mind. "I have sugar," he said. "But no milk. Sorry."

He didn't keep much food in the loft at all. Cooking wasn't exactly in his skill set so he tended to eat out or order in most of the time.

Lydia gave a small smile and wandered closer to his kitchen, wrapped snugly in the blanket and somehow still cold. "I don't take either in my tea, so that's fine," she replied. At least, not in green tea, anyway.

"Is it always this cold in here or is it because you have electric heating?" she wondered, pulling the blanket in tighter around herself. She didn't really mean to whine, but good God.

"I have electric heat," he said, looking over and frowning again. It didn't look like the blanket was doing much good to keep her warm. That could be a problem. "Why don't you go sit down," he suggested. "I'll bring the tea over when it's done brewing."

According to the directions on the box, it was supposed to steep for three to five minutes. Going by the time on his phone, it had only been two.

As much as Lydia didn't like being told what to do, she followed Derek's instruction, moving over to and then sinking onto the couch, curling into a little ball in the corner of it in the hopes that making herself smaller in the blanket would help her retain the heat.

She watched him because there wasn't much else to look at in the loft, but she found herself thinking it was kind of surreal and weird to see Derek making tea in the kitchen. Obviously Derek ate and drank, but she'd never seen it and it was weird seeing Derek doing normal, everyday things. Not in a bad way, just...different. It humanized him a little more than she was prepared to see.

Derek was aware that Lydia was watching him. Not that he could blame her, it's not like he had a TV or anything. Of course, with the power out, the TV wouldn't work anyways. With no light, he also couldn't read, which was how he generally spent his time when he had down time.

When the time was up, he removed the teabags from the mugs and carried them over to the sofa, handing one to Lydia before sitting down next to her. "Sorry you're stuck here," he said, knowing that she had to be going crazy with boredom. Lydia wasn't the type of girl who was used to sitting still and doing nothing as far as he knew.

Wiggling her arms free of the blanket so that she could take the mug, Lydia gave Derek a small, but genuinely grateful smile, taking the mug carefully to keep from burning herself. "Thank you," she said again.

A soft huff escaped her when he spoke again and she lifted her eyebrows. "I would've thought you'd be just as annoyed," she pointed out, taking a sip of her tea and startling the tiniest bit because it was hotter than she'd expected. "So...sorry I'm stuck here," she echoed only to turn the apology back in his direction.

"You're not Stiles," Derek said simply. Hell, he would probably rather be stuck with Peter than Stiles, that's how much the kid irritated him. Being stuck with Lydia wasn't all that bad, in the grand scheme of things.

He sipped his own tea, wrinkling his nose a little at the grassy flavor. Why was this even in his kitchen? Maybe Jennifer left it? He didn't think it had been Braeden. "You warm enough?"

Her eyebrows lifted higher still. "Well spotted," she pointed out, pressing her lips together in lack of amusement. He was lucky she wasn't Stiles, because it could have just as easily been the Stilinski kid who'd done Scott the favor except that Lydia had already been out and about and Scott had known it.

A little shrug came in response and she took another sip of the tea. Stale, but not horribly so. "Not really, but I'm warmer than I was, so...there is that," she replied honestly. Why are you being so nice to me...? she wondered.

Derek shifted a little closer to her, knowing that he was probably giving off some body heat, despite the chill that he could now feel in the room. His loft really wasn't designed to retain heat, which wasn't often an issue in Beacon Hills, but was tonight.

"I could probably dig up some sweats or something for you," he offered.

Lydia's eyes shifted to give Derek a sideways glance. He was moving closer. "...what are you doing?" she blurted out before she could stop herself and bite it back long enough to reformulate the reaction to something that sounded less suspicious in nature.

"I doubt any of your pants would fit me, but if you've got a sweatshirt, yeah, I'll take that."

"I figured... never mind," Derek said, standing up to go and look for a sweatshirt. Of course Lydia would rather freeze than have him close enough for his body heat to make a difference. What was he thinking? It wasn't like he wanted to be close to her.

He set his mug down and came back with a large Beacon Hills Basketball hoodie leftover from his high school days on the team. "Here."

As Derek stood, Lydia took another sip of the tea and her brow creased with confusion as she watched him go. ...what the hell was he doing, anyway? If it were anyone else, she would've thought they were trying to make a move on her, but that didn't seem like Derek Hale's M.O., so that left her at a loss.

He returned with a sweatshirt with her high school logo on it and she looked up at his face as she reached for it. "...did you play?" she asked, noting the "basketball" emblazoned below the high school's name. "I wouldn't have pictured you as a basketball guy..." she thought aloud, setting her mug down and wiggling free of the blanket enough to pull the sweatshirt on. It smelled strongly of laundry detergent or dryer sheets, like the last time it had been washed, it had immediately been folded and put away so that it would retain that smell.

Derek was definitely not trying to make a move, he was just trying to be nice. Which might strike some people as more unusual than him making a move on a pretty girl. Because, yeah, he wasn't blind and he knew that Lydia was attractive but he had never been impressed by her airhead popular girl act.

"Yeah, I played," he said. "It was the hot sport in Beacon Hills when I was in high school. Not sure exactly when that shifted to Lacrosse."

It was hard to think about Derek as a high school student; that had probably been a whole life ago for him. Even though she'd met the younger version of him and had tried to be there for him, being supportive and making sure that he didn't have to be alone while he was out, trying to put that younger self into a proper context was harder than maybe it should be. Though, faced with a blast from Derek's past and hugging it around herself as she crossed her arms around her chest to hold herself, it was hard not to.

"Were you any good?" she asked, the smallest of playful smiles starting to tug at the corners of her mouth. "You weren't very tall back then," she pointed out, because he hadn't been that much taller than she was when he'd been aged down. His younger self had only had a couple of inches on her.

It certainly felt like a lifetime ago. Derek had a hard time remembering when he was less cynical, when he had hope for his life, when he had Paige. So much changed since then and he had lost more than any person should have to lose in a lifetime.

"I wasn't bad," he said. "You know, werewolf abilities gave me an advantage." Something that probably wasn't all that fair, but he liked being part of a team. In fact, he had been pretty popular as a teenager, not unlike Lydia herself.

"Cheater," she teased, reaching for her mug again and taking another sip before setting it back down and snuggling into Derek's comforter. "You were adorable back then," she added, "I don't know what happened..." She kept her tone light so that he knew she was teasing him in the hopes that he wouldn't fall down the rabbit hole of thinking about all the terrible things he'd been through. Once the words left her mouth, she wished that they hadn't once she realized the potential was still there, but she couldn't unsay them.

"It's weird thinking about you my age..." she admitted after a pause.

"What, I'm not adorable now?" Derek joked, sitting back down and picking up his own mug. Why did people like tea so much? He would much rather have a beer even though he couldn't get drunk.

He was already thinking about those things, so her words didn't make it any worse. "It wasn't all that long ago, Lydia," he added. "I'm not that old."

Adorable wasn't really the word she'd use if she was going to describe Derek now. They hadn't ever really gotten along and she only trusted him because Scott seemed to, but she wasn't blind. Any idiot could see that Derek was an attractive man, at least conventionally so. "Don't push your luck," she laughed, rolling her eyes and shivering a little, reaching for the tea again and this time, holding the warm mug in her hands after she'd sipped from it.

"I know," she said, shrugging a little. "But I saw you like that. You're different now." Taller. Hairier. Less charismatic. More jaded, undoubtedly.

"Yeah, well, a lot happened between then and now," Derek said with a shrug. He wasn't sure exactly what Lydia knew about his history, but he was sure it was enough to explain why he changed so much.

He noticed her shiver again and frowned. "Are you still cold?" he asked. The temperature was definitely dropping more in the loft and it didn't seem like the power was coming back anytime soon.
