BINGO!: “An awkward ex”
It took exactly 30 seconds for Alicia's emotional state to go from 'handling it' to 'red alert run away fast.' By all means, her world should have ended when George told her that her not-exactly-ex husband had returned for good. The lie she'd told everyone would surely come to light now, exposing her for the completely terrible person and utter coward she'd become. She would lose her friends and George and everything she cared about. Everyone, everyone believed that she had formally divorced Terence. It was probably the only reason George had indulged her and allowed himself his feelings for the last couple years. Because he thought she was single and on her way to being emotionally available to him. But if there was one thing Alicia was good at, it was lying to herself. She'd lied to herself and convinced herself that if she just ignored Terence's very existence, that the marriage would just go away and not be a problem for her anymore. She's allowed herself to believe that she'd never actually see her husband again, so it wouldn't really matter and no one would ever find out. And she'd talked herself into believing that she'd have plenty of time to figure out what to say to Terence when they finally ran into each other again for the first time since he moved out. She was wrong. So very, very wrong. Tuesday morning, 36 hours after hearing about the possibility of a run-in with him, that theoretical horror became a waking nightmare. When she wasn't on an active assignment, Alicia was supposed to be in the training areas, working not only on her own physical and magical training, but giving a little guidance to the first year recruits, most of them straight out of Hogwarts. But not all of them. She was at her desk when she looked up and saw him, walking through the room with one of the departmental supervisors. Her breathing stopped as panic took over, and it was all she could do not to jump up and run. No, she held herself frozen until Terence was out of sight, hoping desperately that if she didn't move, he wouldn't see her. Then she allowed herself a trip to the bathroom for a panic attack. The question of what he was doing there was answered very quickly with a visit to one of her superiors. Terence Higgs was the department's newest hitwizard, delivered to them straight from the Muggle military, decorated and commended with honors, and they were lucky to have someone of his caliber and training on their side, so she ought to do her best to acclimate him, and by the way, he was already supposed to be on his way to the gym so she could formally assess where he was at. Oh, previous personal relationship? Perfect, she already had a report with him, that should make things easier, time to move along darling. Alicia almost left the building to just go home and sleep for the next 16 years, but morbid curiosity and a need to punish herself pushed her toward the gym, where she changed into her usual workout clothes of sweatpants and a tanktop, and reluctantly took her bag of sparring equipment out to face the music. |
