Warnings: posted in multiple parts, no smut due to length and author frustration, may be continued later.

Leon's never been fond of undercover work. There's a skill set required to it that he's never quite perfected, or at least, never to his own standards of perfection. There's few roles he can portray with any kind of realism and those aren't the kinds of characters he'd want people he actually liked seeing him perform.

But when the job calls for it...

Which would explain in part why he's dressed in almost nothing, hanging out in a back alley in a bad part of town waiting for the local wanna-be badass to show up. The other part of the explanation would require him to examine his relationships with certain members of Garden far too closely for comfort. He can admit that he's grown rather fond of the place and its citizens. After ten years, it's a bit hard not to, but he's not ready to give away anything else. Not yet.

He wishes it was harder to pretend to be a down-and-out hitter for hire when he sees the back-up Carlos-the-not-dumb-enough brings with him. Tall, dark, broad shouldered and with eyes that glow enough in the dim twilight Leon figure's he's either a SOLDIER or he got way too friendly with a pond of ooze at some point. Leon's too old for the rent-boy angle and he's never gotten 'twitchy' down enough to pass for a junkie. The scars... well. The scars are sort of a resume in and of themselves.

"Leo."

"Carlos."

"Where's my money?"

"Where's my client?"

Only the best hitters have enough reputation to pick their own jobs. Leon needs to get close to Emanuel Costello and to do that, he needs Carlos, and as much as he'd rather pick the asshole off with a sniper rife or even just snap his neck in the middle of the night, Costello has something Leon needs and he just doesn't like dealing with Hades.

Likes it less than going through these games.

"Fair will take you to see the client after you're vetted."

Leon shrugs and points up to the fire escape half rusted off the brownstone he's leaning against. "Money's at the top."

"That ain't what we agreed on."

"Neither is mister eye-shine beating the crap outa me which is what I gather you think is gonna happen."

Tall, dark and Fair grins at him like they're sharing a joke, hands lifting in a helpless 'what can you do?' shrug. Leon hopes he doesn't resent the bastard too much in the morning for the bruises he knows he's going to get tonight. He left his gunblade back in his gummi and there's rules about magic and shit on worlds that haven't been properly connected yet.

Not that he'll let the guy kill him if it comes down to that. Leon's a SeeD, he's never revealed all his tricks.

"Your funeral el ojete."

Leon rolls his shoulders and pops his neck and looks his supposed executioner over with a critical eye. "Nah. I don't think so." Arching a brow he switches to Cetra, hoping the guy knows enough to catch his drift but banking on the last word. "Amin casi mell Sephiroth."

Carlos hits the brownstone skull first and Leon feels a tad sorry for the slimy asshole before there's a fist around his throat and he's a lot more worried about his own life than some backwater crooks. Shit. He should have figured he'd run into the one guy around who still liked Ex-General Psycho.

"Where? Where is he? Where's Cloud?"

Leon lets the other brow arch and points out, "Crushing my windpipe? Not going to get you answers. Just a thought."

There's an honest and open struggle on the guys face. It's sort of novel, the idea that someone capable of crushing bones with his pinky is still human enough to show his emotions plain as day.

Leon wonders if he was ever that easy to read, and dismisses the notion. He's the Ice Prince. He bleeds Blizzara's.

"Tell me where they are and I let you live."

Ah, the intimidation technique of interrogation. Amateur.

"Not really incentive if I don't believe you. Then there's the issue of 'how do you get there' after I tell you? Because if you could do it on your own, you would have already." The hand around his jugular doesn't tighten, but that has more to do with Leon needing his voice box intact in order to speak, than any reluctance on uber-soldat's reluctance to dole out lethal damage. He can see the tendons in the guy's bicep flex with the stress of not killing him. Poor bastard has probably had it rough out here on the pimple of the universes prick.

"Okay. But what proof do I have that you'll take me there?"

That really does call for the indolent shrug, so Leon doesn't bother to check the reflex. "You don't. Just the satisfaction of rending me limb from limb if I don't deliver."

He's expecting the claustrophobic pain of losing his air, but the flinch is interesting. Huh. Someone isn't a natural born killer. Nice to know.

"Tell me about Cloud."

It takes exactly five heartbeats before the fingers like bands of steel on his windpipe loosen enough for him to drag a shallow breath and he doesn't bother to do more than ease his lungs. "Short blond chocobo with blue eyes, a pissy attitude and a great ass?"

Violet eyes blink at him and he wonders if maybe being stuck in the backwoods of No and Where has rattled the fellow's brains but the nearly hysterical laughter that bubbles up is just a pressure release. Fabio probably wasn't expecting the appreciative tone to that last bit.

But really, varied psychoses aside, Strife has a fine ass. Leon's pretty sure most of Olympus has checked it out at some point.

"Okay. Yeah. I might believe you. Zack Fair."

Friendly. Of course considering the power dynamic at play at the moment, Zack can afford to be.

"Leo."

It's as good a name as any.

"You'll take me to Cloud. And Sephiroth."

Leon relaxes back against the alley wall and looks Zack over pointedly. "No. I'll tell you where Cloud is, if you help me deal with Costello. Taking you to him is going to cost you a little more."

"Oh really?"

"You might have noticed, I'm not terribly afraid of the consequences of not making you happy. You? Want me to be happy."

Zack isn't looking very happy. but he's not looking murderous anymore either, and the faint little half lip quirk is hard for Leon to read, which annoys the fuck out of him because reading people is half of his job.

"You remind me a lot of this Wutain guy I used to know. So. What do you want with a dog like Costello?"

Leon ignores the comment, but tucks it away for later chewing.

"He has something of mine."

Zack had worked for, and with, some fairly nasty folks in his life. Usually because they were lords of some kind and he had the misfortune of being assigned near them, and other times in an effort to get information for his General and King and bring said nasty folks down. Other times like with Hojo... well... nasty people were sometimes useful, even if only as fertilizer.

Costello was shady and dirty and slime, but Zack was out of his depth and looking for work and information and if nothing else when the time came he wouldn't feel bad handing the turd over to the proper authorities. Or a passing zolom. He wouldn't, had he known what was going to happen, turned the sorry bastard over to Leo.

The brunet was hard and cold. Broad shouldered, lean hipped, and with muscles Zack knew came from swinging a sword. Leo moved with that gliding dancer's grace he remembered Sephiroth having, effortless and predatory, faint scars teasing in the dim light. He never raised his voice, kept his language clean and had the patience of a saint. Or a professional hit man.

It was all Zack could do to keep his expression impassive as Leo calmly dislocated Costello's other knee.

“Where is the Maiden's Tear?”

“God fucking damnit!!! Costello was a man in his late forties, who had lived his whole life in the kill ad be killed world of the organized crime family, and yet, the proper application of pain... “It's in the safe. The bedroom safe. The combination is...”

“Unnecessary. I don't care about your drugs, or your money, or anything else.”

Leo is ice, and considering Zack was Sephiroth's SiC, he knows the kind of life that leads to that gentle, absolute voice. He can't even console himself that Sephiroth wouldn't be just like this, exactly like this, if the situation called for it and it's messing with Zack's brain because he doesn't want to like Leon at all but he has to respect the man.

The bedroom safe is hidden behind a painting of of a city sky line, and Leo has it cracked open in under five seconds, bypassing bricks of white powder and stacks of money for a single red stone that shimmers like fire. Leo runs his fingers over it with reverence and Zack debates reaching for the materia for exactly as long as it takes for the man's silver eyes to cut his way with a calm dead stare. Zack likes breathing, he's been far too close to not being able to, often enough thank you.

He settles for arching a brow at the man. “You got what you wanted, now where's Cloud?”

To his credit, and Zack's shiver of unease, Leo doesn't even hesitate. Zack's not sure what's more upsetting, that Leo isn't afraid of him in the slightest, or that Zack has gotten so used to people being afraid of him that he's upset when they don't. He wants Leo to react, and maybe he even wants the guy to crack a little, but he's not sure how much of that want has to even do with Leo and how much has to do with the vaguest similarities to Seph that have Zack hoping in the first time since forever.

“Follow me.”

Zack really wishes that was harder to do.

He sort of thought there'd be a... well a car or a boat or something, not a ship. A space ship. That sort of boggled. Of course he'd known he wasn't on his world but he hadn't quite connected that ripping, killing blackness and Dark with space and the traveling through of said.

He wasn't sure Leo's ship would survive it either, the thing looked suspiciously... squishy. And a bit rainbow. It certainly didn't look like a machine Sephiroth, or Leo, would want to be seen near. Maybe the guy had a Yuffie paint it for him.

“Get in, hold on, shut up.”

Okay, Leo talked more than Seph. That was good. It might keep Zack from trying to joke around and loosen the guy up.

The inside was surprisingly spacious, and the walls didn't give when he leaned on one so that was a plus. The way Leo buckled in, twisted on the engines and threw them into the sky made Zack wish he had held on, because the floor was hard and the sudden pressurizing of the cabin had his ears ringing.

“Hn. Graceful.”

“Asshole.”

“So I'm told.”

“Woah. Okay. So... uh...” Zack's eyes crossed to stare at the glowing blue blade mere inches from his nose and carefully kept his hands on the floor. Leo moved fast. As fast as a SOLDIER maybe.

“How do you know Cloud?”

Zack arched a brow at Leo and wondered if maybe his boyfriend wouldn't be, well, his boyfriend when he finally got home. “I brought him home to Aeris. He was a raw recruit in the guard and the cutest thing to come down from the mountains. Wanted to be a SOLDIER. I was an idiot and an asshole and didn't tell him to get his ass safely back to Nibelhiem.” And if there was anythign at all in his life he regretted more than not hauling Seph out of the castle when he had the chance, it was letting Cloud follow him down to that hell.

But Cloud was alive. Leo wouldn't be so careful if Cloud wasn't. And Sephiroth. That meant... that meant Zack could still fix things. No matter how long it had been. He wouldn't believe otherwise.

“Hn.”

Zack tensed as something started beeping, but forced himself to relax when the sword to his head didn't so much as quiver, and Leo drew a small device from his pocket. It looked sort of like a detonator.

“Explosive decompression is a messy way to go, but relatively painless due to the speed.”

“Got it.”

Leo's lips twitched, then he moved away to check on the beeping thing. Zack stared at the ceiling and wondered if all Cloud's friends were slightly insane.

“Leon? Are you okay? Did you find it?”

Zack arches a brow, and then with a ripple of muscles and mako enhancement, he's on his feet and draped over the other man in a bear hug, easily pinning the brunet's arms to his sides, chin digging sharply into a bony shoulder with a bright smile. “He found me! Hi!!”

The voice belongs to a mouse on a screen who looks ever so confused. Zack is pretty sure it's from the sudden stillness and possible deathglare his new captive/captor may be giving the poor guy.

“Uhm. Leon?”

“The mission was a success, the return is still being negotiated, Sir.”

Zack waggles his eyebrows and bites back a grunt when the poor mouse blushes and Leon plants his elbow right into an unguarded kidney, but he's pretty sure they aren't about to die so that's fine.

“Erm. Okay. Uh... good! You need a vacation Leon! Have fun! Bring your friend home to the castle sometime!” The screen goes black before Leon can growl or splutter and Zack just grins like a madman because now he can die happy.

“So. We're still negotiating taking me back to Cloud?”

“...I'm considering the size of chocolate cake Aeris will bake me for trussing you up in a pink dress and dropping you in her living room.”

“I'm awful good at escapes and have no shame.”

“And I know Pain!”

Zack makes a mental note to learn how to cast using reflective surfaces because that's such a cheat, right as the behemoth slams into him and everything goes dark and painful. It's a nasty spell, he's been poisoned before and even if there wasn't a hand at his throat cutting off his air, he couldn't have dragged out a counter spell of his own. “....damn....”

“We're going back to Radiant Garden. I'm trusting that you'll behave yourself, because if you don't,” Zack can't see a thing but he can imagine easily enough the look in Leon's eyes as the next words purr out, completely ruthless and absolute. “This is nothing like what I will do when we're there. You will not have the time to regret, or fear, or feel, before I cut you down and blast your remains into their component particles. There will be no second chances, no Phoenix Downs, no Life spells, not even a tenuous connection to the Dark to save your will. You will not exist.”

There's a cool green antidote sliding down his throat and stopping the terrible certainty that he's going to meet his end piece by piece. He drinks it down, then curls up against the bulkhead and grins sheepishly. “Are you gonna be ticked if I admit you remind me of someone?”

“Only if you say it's Sephiroth. He went insane.”

That's a hard lodge of ice in his gut and Zack has to chuckle because trust Leon to never pull a punch. “Nah. This Wutain guy. Very serious. All business. Used to work with him sometimes.”

“Hn.”

“So I guess...”

“Cloud is relatively stable. He's in a committed relationship with Aeris and Dean.”

The cold knot eases a bit. Aeris was always able to make things better. Heaven help him she was going to beat him silly when he walked through her door. Ah well. As long as he didn't fall through her roof again right?

“Dean?”

“A hunter Cloud picked up from a hell dimension.”

“... I miss all the fun!” The blindness was wearing off and he could feel his handle on magic coming back, but he wasn't about to try another blitz. Not when Leon was watching him with an ether in hand and half the restorative already drunk. Without adrenaline fuzzing up his priorities, he could see the guy's sword was kinda, really weird. The facial scar was hot as hell. Where the man came up with the white t-shirt and all the belts though... “...strappy bits? They haven't broken you of those yet?”

“I'm not interested in participating in preformed arrangements.”

“Aaaaaah. You run and hide when the desserts come out. Does that mean you aren't Cloud's boyfriend?”

“Sparring partner.”

“Good. The kid needs someone to keep him working.”

“Cloud Strife is quite capable of taking care of himself, given proper motivation.”

Zack just arches a brow and hooks his arms loosely around his knees. That sounded way too much like military talk for 'I'm his CO and I can't actually admit how much I watch him and his family because it's socially unacceptable'. Good thing Zack had a lot of practice not caring a whit about social acceptability. He also didn't like the idea of the guy taking care of his friends and family being so... not a part of that family. He'd fucked up that way with Sephiroth. He wouldn't let it happen again. Zack Fair never made the same mistake twice.

“Does that mean you don't have a boyfriend?”

Leon's pained expression was worth every bruise.
