Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Things are quiet in Goldenrod, and for that, he is quite thankful. He has been travelling for days, making stops in every city along the way, forming reconnections with each business under his ownership. He had not long ago arrived off the train, after his touring of Kanto, pausing to recover before beginning again in Johto.

His latest visit had been Silph Co. back in Kanto as a diplomatic discussion to reforge relations that may have been damage in the incident that occurred all those years ago. It had gone well, but cost him a considerable amount of money.

And now he sat in a small cafe, enjoying a moment's rest, and a little time to himself. Although, while he seemed alone, he was not. There were those around him who watched, prepared to return on his command if anything were to happen.
Still, it seemed unlikely that he would be disturbed, as while he attracted the stares and whispers of those around him, no-one dared to approach.

He simply sat in silence, sipping at his coffee and reading through his notebook.

He let out a snort at the question and sat back into the seat, crossing his arms. "What the heck are you doing in Goldenrod? Shouldn't you be cowering in some 'super secret location' or something stupid like that?"

"I am managing my business." He flipped another page in his book, clearly uninterested in the situation.
"I simply took time to re-evaluate my position. The kind of reflection that cannot be done with constant interference."

"You can manage that some place that isn't Goldenrod." Silver gritted his teeth a little between replies, watching each turn of the page. He hated it when people did that, it made him feel small.

"You ran away like a coward, leaving everyone and everything with claims of leaving to become a better trainer."

"My business is in Goldenrod. This deal, at least. Not that it is your business."
He pauses for a moment at those last words, finally glancing up from the page and glaring across at the boy sat before him.
"A coward? Hmn, I see nothing cowardly about withdrawing from a defeat when you know that you have been bested."

"There's a difference between retreat and just up and leaving. You did the second one." He paused a moment, deepening his voice and taking on a mocking tone. "Oh, hey, Archer, Ariana, Rocket's disbanded. See ya. Oh, Silver, I'm going to be gone from this time forward, becoming a better trainer where no one will ever find me even if there will be arrest warrants for me as far as the eye can see for the next year and a half. What's that? Give the people who were in some way my responsibility an idea of what to do? Nah, they'll fend for themselves, what with all structure blown out like that. There's no way my Admins will decide to try and call me back, marking themselves and two idiots as executives."

With the show over he settled back into his own voice and returned his expression to his usual scowl. "How many people did you have to bribe to make that whole legal issue thing disappear anyway?"

"I admit, it was not the best decision. However, one rarely thinks clearly in moments of such extreme stress. It is not as simple as you are making it sound, and I would never expect you to understand." He narrowed his eyes as he threaded his fingers together.
"But believe me, there are many mistakes I have made that I would rectify in an instant were I given the chance."

He turned away again taking another sip of his coffee.
"Well, nothing gets past you, does it? There really is no end to what a little money can do."

"You could have thought ahead and made more preparations. It's dumb to not think of what to fall back on if your efforts fail." So said the one who plopped down across from Giovanni without any idea of what he'd end up saying.

"I'm not stupid. I know more about how that whole 'bribe your way out of trouble' thing works thanks to Rocket than I do about not getting into trouble to start with. Plan to bribe yourself into being the Leader at Viridian again?"

"Everything is so much easier in hindsight, isn't it?
Things changed. Everything changed. All the plans I had made were no longer applicable, and I made a snap decision which ended up being less that favourable.
Oh, but please, why don't you tell me everything about not rushing into bad decisions, yes? I'm sure you're quite an expert on that."
Not that he was any better. For all his plans, he still had a tendency to make poor decisions when pushed to it. He had always been quick to anger, and that led him to make rash choices.

"Ah yes... Well, there are three driving forces for human behaviour. One of those is money, so I am fortunate in that respect. Enough of it can buy you anything. An important lesson to learn.
I don't think I will return to gym leading though. That was little more than a distraction."

"Yeah, see, I have the fact that I'm still young and learning as an excuse - not that I need it, because if I rush in no one but me pays the price for stupidity. You're an adult, and were, and you had people relying on you to not fuck up." He gave a small snort. "At least I've learned not to drag others down with me."

"I prefer strength." He reached for his own drink at least, cocoa, and drank deeply before continuing. "I don't care for most of the objects that can be bought with money, nor do I really care about political power. But strength, actual strength, you can't just bribe your way to being strong. And yeah, you usually gotta earn money and political power in some way, you can still scam people out of both."

"Well, you're not learning very well. Although, in that respect, I'm not entirely sure whether you'd have been better off with or without my influence." He sighed, closing his book and smoothing his hair back. "And being a child, you can be forgiven for your naivety. That you assume the adult world to be as stable and reliable as you believe it is... I'm sure you'll come to realise that things are not always as simple as you like to think."

He sighed deeply. He had never quite been able to put the reason for his self-exile into words that Silver could understand. It wasn't something he could quite explain to himself, but it was harder trying to verbalise his motivations.

"Strength doesn't last forever. Eventually it is worn down by the patient. There will always be liars, and cheats. Those willing to exploit the system. But strength will eventually fade. The previous champions replaced by someone new."

"I think I'm learning fine. I'm not perfect, and it pisses me off, but I'm learning as I go along." There was a small, bitter laugh after that. "And besides, who would I drag down with me? I've been pretty careful not to rely on anyone more than I have to, and to not let anyone rely on me." There was a pause as he thought that last bit. "I'll be a trainer. That's one thing that's always stable unless you mess up. Battling, traveling, and you don't have to deal with most things unless you're some big wig."

He'd grabbed his cup again, looking into it as he thought. He didn't want to deal with people. Not long term anyway. He didn't trust them farther than he could lift and throw them for one thing. As a traveling trainer he was sure he could avoid such stupid things - even if it wasn't the most well thought-out plan if one looked beyond the surface, at least he thought he didn't have to worry about getting close to people.

"I don't need to be the champion to do what I want to do. Yeah, I sort of want to in order to prove I'm strong, and some day I'll battle the champ and then I'll do what I want from there. Once I've learned what I need to. I don't want to cheat or lie my way into stuff, I want to do it all on my own skill. And I will."

"Then perhaps you are learning well. The less you rely on others, the less collateral you have to deal with when things go wrong." His tone, at least for a moment, became more earnest. "And I do not mean stability, simply in terms of one's livelihood, or in a business. It seems 'adult' is a word people like to use, to imply an automatic sense of security, and the ability to hold one's life together. It is not always so black and white."
