The darkness hit him like a big, black wall and gave him such a fright that he slowed his peddling so much the bicycle beneath him started to wobble frantically. He hopped off, running his hands affectionately across her handlebars. "Sorry, sorry... it's just... that darkness..." he told her, gasping for air. He was instantly reminded of De Selby, and worried that he might end up having a fainting fit from this severe accumulation of dark air. "Oh god, we need to burn it... we need matches..." he said in a panic, pulling his jacket up to mask his mouth and nose from the air. Wherever they were, the unsanitary conditions of the night had taken over completely. Perhaps there was a volcano nearby.
His only comfort was the fact that the policemen were going to have a hard time tracking him in this darkness, and by the sight of the tall buildings around him and the whoosh of mechanical objects... he certainly wasn't in rural Ireland anymore. Was this how bad the air of the city had become? He'd just have to take shelter somewhere with lighting, he was never going to have enough matches to burn his way out of this one.
