Summary: Wanda goes to clear a floor of the hospital alone
The plan failed, well Tony's plan anyway. Not that it was particularly surprising, given that most of the mutants who had come to be heroes didn't want to be heroes in the shadow of the Avengers. The first stage of Tony's plan, with she and he clearing by air, had not gone too terribly. It was a bit of a shock, even knowing that the undead retained powers, to see some of them flying and at first Wanda had a hard time convincing herself that these were no longer innocent humans. Still, that part went smoothly.
It was the other stages that did not go so well, or at least Nick's "assignment". Many of the mutants broke off from Nick and Cap immediately to go off and fight on their own. On their way to clear a hospital to turn into a base of operations, the group was ambushed and someone was bitten. Wanda was, ashamedly, thankful to hear that it wasn't any of her teammates. Even if she wasn't speaking to Nick, she didn't hate him so much that she wished that kind of ill upon him. Not that she wished it on anyone else, but she was definitely of the attitude better theirs than hers. At least Pietro's mission had been mildly successful- they had found a few survivors although one of them refused to leave their safehouse and was subsequently devoured by a roaming horde of Infected. Oh well, there were always going to be losses. That there had been any survivors was a miracle unto itself.
That had all been the day before, followed by a sleepless night that Wanda spent curled up in a hospital bed staring at a dark window. Today was spent clearing areas of the city. It was gruesome but strangely satisfying work as long as she pretended that these hadn't once been people. There were, however, far more zombies than she'd expected. She would destroy several and more would appear in their place. It really put the size of a metropolitan population into perspective when the majority of it was constantly attacking in an attempt to gnaw off your face.
When Wanda finally got a chance to rest at midday she found that she could only sleep with sunlight filtering in and Pietro nearby. She still had nightmares. Now it was dark again and she felt uneasy as she roamed the hallways of the hospital alone. It had been suggested that someone make sure the upper floors were still clear- it was a big building and it was likely that Infected would manage to infiltrate- and Wanda volunteered because she was secretly too afraid to sleep. Although wandering by herself in a silent darkened hallway seemed a rather bad idea in retrospect. Every shadow and noise made her jumpy; the whole situation was like something out of a horrible horror movie. At least she had her forcefield to protect her. And a pistol.
As she neared the end of the hallway she heard a distinct scrabbling sound from behind a closed door to her left. Hands glowing and energy shield strengthened she reached for the handle while her mind screamed over and over just walk away, don't open that door! But she had to. That's what she was here for. With a deep breath she turned the door and shoved it open. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the darkness and by then she'd already been slammed back into a wall by two Infected who were kept six inches at bay by her forcefield. She felt panicky, she fought a scream and tried to remember to breathe. That was sort of difficult when two bloodied corpses were clawing at her with decaying fingers and gnashing rotting teeth in gaping mouths. This was the closest she'd actually been to a zombie so far. The eyes were the most terrifying. They were dark and dead.
Finally, Wanda regained her senses and shot at one with the pistol, causing it to reel, away moaning. The other was hit with a hex bolt and it rather disgustingly exploded. Gore coated her forcefield and splattered the walls. Panting with relief and adrenaline Wanda leaned back and slid down to the floor, pulling her knees up to her chin. The nightmares would probably be worse after this.
