There she was--
Characters: Betty Ross, Bruce Banner
Setting: New York City, late morning.
Content: Nothing questionable.
Summary: Betty's in town.
"Hi. Regular coffee, please."
Will that be all, the barista asked her; Betty browsed the food selection displayed under the glass dome-- "You know what, I'll take one of those cheese pastries," she pointed, "And...how much for the paper?" The girl said she'd only brought it to look through, but didn't mind giving it away, and offered it to Betty without a price. "Thanks," Betty smiled as she pulled out the money from her pocket and handed it to her, tip included, in exchange for her breakfast. She left the little corner cafe and foot it through the busy crowd; wet, eager footsteps filled the streets while people moved along hastily to beat others out to their Saturday destination, to reach their favorite coffee spot, the grocery store, or the subway even before they got too full and the lines got too long. Quick moving and no eye contact, that was the New York way. The city hadn't changed, in that respect. But everything else, at least things she remembered, looked like flashier, more artificial versions of themselves, which she had to chuckle at, but wasn't surprised by the city's new facelift.
Betty folded her newspaper back and scanned the articles until she found something on the military. She hadn't expected the little blurb to divulge anything useful, but there was something on a disgraced general who seemed to be really trying it these days. Let it go, suggested in big quotes. Oh, Betty rolled her eyes. If there was one thing she knew about the military, it was that they never let things go. If they did, she might still be in New Guinea enjoying life and not back here, ghosting on through while simultaneously trying get the nitty-gritty on the military's suspect behavior. There wasn't anything on Red's little stunt overseas, which made her think that she hadn't made that big of a rumble, tch, ha!, or it was being kept hush hush. Either way, ever since she fled from her father and the base, she knew something sketch was going on and still was. Betty took a bite of her pastry. Damn, she kinda missed these.
