Float
Characters: Um...OTA. Avengers, WCA, any refugees with them, anyone in the Raft, anyone around New York...
Setting: The MoMA, then the Raft. Because we are culturally rounded people.
Content: Strong feelings about stuff and junk.
Summary: Avengers assemble...somewhere with bars on the windows!

The convoy was still making its way along the Parkway when Iron Man stopped short still three blocks out of his destination. It wasn't much of a destination anymore; it had been a modern architectural wonder that stretched 93 stories into the New York sky, dwarfing the buildings around it, but now, even this close, Tony couldn't see its seamless glass facade or the S T A R K that should have loomed watchfully over midtown. But even this far, he could hear the groan of the zombies stumbling through the blood soaked rubble, lured there by the spectacle days ago and still dragging their feet through broken glass. After the flurry of communications throughout the week, Tony thought he had dealt with it and moved on to the next crisis, but he didn't know if he could go much closer yet. The tiny dots crawling along the Parkway at the edge of his vision marched stolidly onward while Tony hovered over the eternal gridlock of abandoned taxis, coated now with black dust dulling their ubiquitous yellow swarm. Onward, then. There was no reason to go back.

Turning in place, Iron Man streaked through the darkened, burnt out, shattered shell of Manhattan, veering tightly around chipped concrete and blackened brick until his own flare of light and hot red reflected back at him in the smooth wave of the Museum of Modern Art's glass face. It still glittered-- or maybe, compared to everything else, it seemed to have a welcoming polish to it. No wonder Steve chose this place. Iron Man swept upward to coast over it and gently glide down into the sculpture garden, touching down in a careful crouch to not crack the tile in this rare pocket of preserved serenity. The trees were wilted and the grass overgrown and dry, but the pool was still full-- rainwater, probably. It splashed clear and wide when Tony hurled his helmet at the peaceful surface, sending it into chaos reflecting on itself, lapping at the edges and soaking the floor. Okay, he was okay. He sat down heavily on the grass, head in his hand, watching the water distort the Iron Man's face as it slowly settled again. There was nothing he could do about it now. He fucked up, he shouldn't have gone anywhere in the first place, he should have handed Mystique over to S.H.I.E.L.D., he should have made sure he knew where everyone was and he should have done, known and been better. There was no excuse, there never was any good excuse for why he did the shit he did, so there was nothing left for Tony but to limp in with his tail tucked between his legs and promise, as ever, to do better. Tearing his gaze away from the red and gold, he glanced around at the surrounding glass walls, every inch wide window panes just waiting to be shattered by the next disaster. As beautiful as the museum was, it was the last place to put up a good defense. That was the first task. Onward, then.

The hug help to re-energize him, and by the time he was released he was starting to look more like himself.

He coughed, nodding and rolling his shoulders, looking back to the building with a thoughtful hum. "I think I took us to the least practical spot in all of New York," he said with a small laugh, "I was thinking with my heart instead of my head." Being surrounded by art was a nice way to go, but hardly the strong hold they needed. "We need someplace built to keep them out."

Tony almost looked as though he was going to argue, eyes wide and lips parted, then laughed with Steve, unable to defend the choice. Well, they had a good restaurant. Steve could have been thinking with his stomach, too. Hell, it could be argued that there was some grace to the choice; it was pretty much guaranteed that nobody else would be there. But Steve wasn't arguing it, so Tony bit his lip and nodded.

"Or we need to get out of their way," he suggested. Castle walls might just prolong the siege. Magneto knew exactly where to find them and they welcomed it, and anywhere they tried to build a fortress would be the next obvious target. "Get out of the city, take them up north and plant a vegetable farm. How long can we stay here?" Tony laid out, dropping his voice like he suddenly remembered there were others that might be listening. But that was so much more comfortable, drafting the plan, even on his knees in the dry grass.

"We've all ready dived into the vending machines, and I wouldn't want to stay much longer if there's somewhere better. But we could probably last another week if we had to. He didn't look thrilled about the idea though. With everyone back in one place, the sooner they got settled somewhere more permanent the better.

"Do we have a way to transport that many people so far though?" he countered with a frown. "The closer to the city we can manage the easier it will be to get everyone there."

"No, I meant--" Tony started, but Steve made a good point. 'Here' was supposed to mean the city, not the museum-- the Heart of Darkness wasn't a long term plan, it was where the zombie population thrived and a sustainable food source was paved into a parking lot. But it wasn't worth moving, either, if no one would survive the trip. Tony shook his head with a thoughtful frown, contemplating the logistics of moving 'a couple dozen or so' people over the bridge alone and sighed. What was the next step, then? Where could they house a small village in this transparent city of glass? Who maintained a fallout shelter after Y2K? After the power grid went down, even the testing bunkers at the SI campus would be sealed shut.

Tony looked up again in surprise, palm out flat like he couldn't believe he didn't think of this before. He saw the lights go back on out at Ryker's well after the city went dark and S.H.I.E.L.D. lost contact with the prison. "The Raft," he said plainly. It should have been obvious. "They have generators, they have food storage, there's only one way out there," he counted off on his fingers, concluding before Steve could bring up the major problem, "Those cells are air tight." There was no common area for the powered criminals, they stayed in their solid, individual cells; maximum, they would have to deal with the 67 guards stationed at the prison that had gone silent. That was 67 zombies, vs. the entire population of Manhattan. Tony knew which challenge he would prefer.

Steve's face was a mix of conflicting emotions. It was good. Almost perfect really. But then there was the obvious problem- while 67 possible zombies were not too much when compared to the rest of the the city, but the more obvious threat was housing civilians alongside some of the most dangerous criminals in the country.

"...We'd have scout it out first. See if there are survivors. The zombies we can handle, but if any of the prisoners survived they might be more dangerous than the infected." He nodded though, not seeing any other major flaws, "...It could work."

"Of course," Tony allowed, both hands up then; there was no question. Even with the risks, it was the best option, the only option so far, on the table. Everything else that would house their group was likely to already be at capacity, and not with friendlies; hotels, schools, even theatres were the first places to fill as the roads became an impassable tangle, and the first places for the infection to spread. They weren't clearing tight areas like that without a lot of casualties, and risking the infrastructure.

"So, who goes?" was the next question, and a tactical one. That was Cap's forte; obviously, Tony wasn't qualified to make that kind of decision. "Who stays here?" he added, because that was just as important. "And--" this is where it got difficult, because they didn't want to be undermanned if the Raft proved to be a deathtrap, but they couldn't risk lax security here because, "what do we do with Loki?"
