Plunge
Characters: Tony, Wicked, Kate and Loki
Setting: The map says Illinois, but it mostly looks like a field.
Content: Explosions! Zombies! Loki!
Summary: The zombie apocalypse isn't really the end of the world. It keeps turning, and this asshole keeps showing up.
For approximately the last fifteen hundred hours the view outside Tony's passenger window had been forest, forest, forest, trees, forest, small shrubs and dead racoons. They rumbled along unpaved road, kicking up dirt in their wake and shuddering over rough, rocky patches. Taking the back roads kept them off of the congested wasteland of the highways and out of the crowded, hungry cities but it was certainly a bumpy, long, twisting ride. The map on the HUD told him they were outside of Rushville, Illinois, which sounded like a good place to stop and grab a bite to Tony, if he couldn't snip back at himself, 'or get bit'. Maybe he just needed to stretch his legs and it would pass.
The trip so far hadn't been particularly eventful; after the pain of dragging themselves out of the abandoned debris that was New York City, they knew already that they would do well to give highly populated areas wide berth. Mostly, they rumbled along just like this, the scenery hardly changing and the stink of cow shit constantly lingering as they took their lonely course along turned but untended fields. They inched around a few trucks stalled or crashed in ditches, keeping a wary watch for their passengers, but mostly saw them sulking way out in the distance in those dirt crops, alone and snarling. The animals were nowhere to be seen. It had taken Tony a few hours to realize why the those fenced, green hills looked queer and unsettling, but when he did he started to notice the splinters in the fences, or where they had fallen down altogether in the long, unmolested grass. They must have gone deeper back, he had decided when one of the girls finally brought it up. Into the woods, away from the roads. If a cow knew just what was coming at it, it might learn to climb a tree.
"I need to piss," Tony announced gruffly, then coughed, not sure when the last time he spoke was, and pushed himself up out of his deep slouch. Christ, that hurt. He thought his ass had gone numb. Leaning forward, he raised his hand to the windshield to shift the map around and get his bearing, twirling a finger over what looked like a big clearing he could get a good stretch in and see well ahead of time if anything was coming, highlighting the area. "Anybody else? We'll switch when we get there, I don't care," he offered the driver as he slouched back down, closing his eyes and pressing his knuckles to his brow over his glasses to try to relax some of that stiffness.
