Capricious
Characters: Steve and Mr. Stark
Setting: The Titanic!
Content: Nothing to clutch your pearls about.
Summary: A stumbling drunk makes a new friend.
The ship was great, the greatest ship to ever sail, that couldn't be denied. It seemed impossibly, intolerably small, though, to Tony. He had been on much more humble vessels before, and on much longer trips, but none where he felt quite so trapped and so in need of the room to bear his extremes. One moment, he was so anxious for the future and caught up in unintelligible notes in a desperate bid to ensure it like he had finally gone mad. In the next, he would be drifting, willing death to catch the wind and finally be ready for him in the churning wake of the ship.
He stared down at it now, stories below, rolling and deadly dark even in the sunlight as the Titanic steamed ahead, undaunted. Clutching the railing until his knuckles turned white, Tony could feel his pulse in his hands and stuttering in his chest, not sure anymore if his vision was really graying at the edges or if he was just willing it to. Concealing his moods from his soon-to-be family was difficult enough, but his condition was somewhat more unpredictable, and it wasn't the time to be admitting the extent of it. At tea, moments ago, he had stood abruptly, almost upsetting the table, and apologized, claiming a need for some air and no need to worry. As soon as he had left the dining room, he put a hand to the wall, willing himself up to the deck and the salty breeze, then stumbled aimlessly across the wood. The ladies he crashed into stared after him incredulously as he drifted on until, pale and gasping, he found himself staring down at the turbines. It was kind of soothing, the rhythm in the chaos of it. Shallow breaths became an occasional gulp, and everything got a little bit darker.
