WHO: Mary Magdalene & Quetzalcoatl
WHEN: Monday afternoon
WHERE: Somewhere on campus
WHAT: Christians Vs Aztecs! (Hopefully without any bloodshed.)
Mary didn't really have much reason for being on campus at the university other than the fact that she'd met a very attractive man who apparently worked there. So when he'd asked if Mary wanted to have coffee with him, she'd followed. Mary never could resist arms like his, and there was nothing wrong with flirting with other men, even if she was with the Hummingbird. Flirting was harmless... Maybe even having a little kiss would be harmless too.
Probably Mary would have gone back to his office with him if she hadn't suddenly felt the tingle down the back of her neck: Huitzilopochtli. She made her excuses to leave the guy and wondered if the Hummingbird was stalking her. (For a moment she was annoyed that he didn't trust her. Then Mary remembered that she'd been about to jump a near-stranger.)
But even as Mary stood and walked towards the immortal feeling she recognised that it wasn't Huitzilopochtli. It was Aztec though, and rounding the corner into a corridor Mary came face to face with him.

Quetzalcoatl was looking forward to getting his office hours over and heading home. Summer classes were a good way to collect some extra money, but they interfered greatly with his 'lying around and basking in the sun' time.
He was on his way to get some coffee when he felt the telltale, skin-crawling sensation of a Christian nearby. He narrowed his eyes and kept walking forward. They showed up to the campus sometimes, and he did his best to ignore them and go about his business. He'd be damned if he let them interfere with the nice life he'd built for himself again.
He hadn't been expecting to nearly run right into the Christian, though. He blinked and stepped back, before he recognized her.
"Aren't you Mary?" he asked hesitantly.

Mary, watching him, raised an eyebrow. She hadn't expected who ever it was to know her, but maybe the Hummingbird had been talking to his friends.
"Am I that infamous?" she asked, looking the Aztec slowly up and down.

"Oh, um, no," Quetzalcoatl said, shaking his head a little. "I'm sorry, I should have introduced myself. I'm Quetzalcoatl. I think Huitzilopochtli may have told you about me?"

"Feathered Serpent," Mary agreed with a short nod. "He's mentioned disdain that you don't eat people."

Quetzalcoatl rolled his eyes. "Yes, that is a sticking point between us." And every other member of my pantheon, he added mentally.
He offered her what he hoped was a friendly smile. "I was just going to go and get some coffee. Would you like some?"

Mary looked a little unsure of his suggestion, her eyebrow once again rising slowly. "Coffee with a Christian?" Mary asked him. "Isn't that enough to get you kicked out of your little club?"

"The club currently consists of myself, Huitzilopochtli, and Tlazolteotl. Huiztilopochtli is dating you and Tlazolteotl is occupied with eating people. I think I'll be able to keep my membership," Quetzalcoatl said.

"And it sounds as though you're less likely to demand me as a whorish sacrifice than your friend," Mary told him and then she smiled a little and nodded. "Alright, coffee. Let's."

"I am generally against whorish sacrifices, yes," Quetzalcoatl said, smiling again. "The campus Starbucks is this way."
He fell into step besides her, his hands in his pockets. "So, you and Huitzilopochtli seem to be doing well."

Mary felt a little smirk coming at his comment. "One could say that," was what she said, her tone easy. "Are you checking that I'm not attempting to seduce your hummingbird away from the fold?" If he was, Mary would only be amused by it. She certainly had no fear of this old and dying God. She was easily the more powerful of them.

"You're in for a terrible disappointment if you are," Quetzalcoatl said with a chuckle. "Huitzilopochtli would die before he'd worship another god, especially yours. No offense."

"I don't know about that," Mary said. "I've got him pretty much wrapped around my finger." Mary wasn't quite sure why she was saying this. Maybe she wanted to get a rise out of this Aztec just like Huitzilopochtli wanted to try and get a rise out of her people.

Quetzalcoatl looked past her as they walked out into the bright afternoon sunshine and said, voice tinged with nostalgia, "You know, it's a shame that you never saw the huey teocalli, the Temple Mayor, when it was in it's full glory. It was the biggest building in Tenochtitlan, and you could see for miles from the top of it. Huitzilopochtli's shrine was at the very top, and oh, he bragged. Our people loved him."
His tone dropped to something flatter, more bitter. "And then the Spanish came, and they tore the temple down and burned it and scattered the ashes. They threw Huitzilopochtli's idol from the very top and watched it shatter on the way down, and they hung a cross with your Christ on it where the idol used to be. So no, Mary, I don't think he will be converting anytime soon. And if he does, I'll mercy kill him, because he's obviously lost his mind."
Quetzalcoatl finished off his little speech with a friendly little smile. "But I doubt it will come to that."

Mary's expression was a little cold, considering his words, and when she spoke Mary's voice was hard. "I take no responsibility for what happened to your people."

"I never said I blamed you. I know your religion, I know who you are. You aren't the one who told them to plunder and pillage. And obviously Huitzilopochtli doesn't blame you either, because he wouldn't be seeing you if he did," Quetzalcoatl said. "But the rest of our pantheon, they'll see you as a Christian first, and it's a dirty word for us because of history. So making jokes about converting our resident hummingbird might not go over well."

"Maybe I'm not looking too go over all that well," Mary told him and then she rolled her eyes at herself.
"I'm on the defensive here," she apologized, crossing her arms. "I'm not very fond of my own people either so I tend to attack when meeting people. But you're the Hummingbird's friend and he's already promised to play nice with mine, so I should really play nice with you."

"You should be honored, Huitzilopochtli is usually very bad at playing nice," Quetzalcoatl joked, glad that the possible fight seemed to be defusing itself. He really did not want to have to tell Huitzilopochtli that he'd gotten into a screaming match with his girlfriend outside of a Starbucks.

"Please don't give me details," Quetzalcoatl said with a laugh. "I'm still trying to adjust to the idea of Huitzilopochtli dating. Such a strange world I'm living in now."

"And dating the bride of the Christian saviour no less," Mary said with a disapproving shake of her head. "When your war god changes his mind about something he really changes his mind."

"The Hummingbird is not a god of indecision, no. So, were you really married to Jesus?" Quetzalcoatl asked, interested. Distaste for much of Christianity aside, Quetzalcoatl always liked learning new things. "I've always wondered how much of the actual history of Christianity has been muddled by religious teachings and the odd fixation on chastity."

Mary's gaze left his and she shrugged. "It's the way I remember it," she told Quetzalcoatl. "The mortals argue both sides, but I'm not the person to ask about what Christians believe. I hate that whole religion. I makes a disgusting mockery of everything that I loved about that man, and I'd like few things better than to see most of their leaders nailed to crosses to feel the suffering he chose to endure for them."
Mary met Quetzalcoatl's eye and worked to contain that damn wrath of hers. "I don't trust anyone who takes a beautiful idea and makes a religion out of it."

The edge of Quetzalcoatl's mouth quirked up. He liked this woman, he decided. She didn't remind him at all of the other Christians he'd met, of the Spanish who'd destroyed his people. There was a refreshing lack of self-righteousness, for one.
"The Spanish told my people that I was actually an avatar of Jesus, you know," Quetzalcoatl said, keeping his voice low so as not to come off as completely insane to the mortals around them. "I never saw much resemblance, myself, but I've often thought it would be interesting to meet him. Especially since he sounded like a much kinder person than most of his followers."

"You've both got the tall, dark and sexy thing going for you," Mary said, eying him up, looking for Jesus in him. "I don't think you all would have gotten on well with him. He hated seeing people die, and human sacrifice was at the very top of his list."

"It's at the top of mine, too," Quetzalcoatl said, a little wistfully. He turned away from the conversation briefly to order his coffee, dark and shot through with a lot of chocolate sauce. Quetzalcoatl loved chocolate.
He added, once she was done with her own order and they were waiting for their drinks to be made, "It's one of the things Huitzilopochtli and I have never seen eye to eye on."

Quetzalcoatl laughed and leaned back against the counter.
"Because I would have a very angry Hummingbird trying to tear out my heart, and you'd have a very angry Coyote attempting to eat you."

"That's right," Mary said, drumming her fingers on the counter as she watched him. "Huitzi told me he knew Coyote." Mary could remember telling Huitzilopochtli the story of how Coyote had made the stars in Arizona to try and quell his fear of them. "It's a small country."

"Not small enough, or I'd have run into the other Aztecs earlier than this," Quetzalcoatl said. "But Coyote would be happy to hear you telling his stories. I tease him about having no attention span at all every time we're outside at night."
