Because the man he was seeing in the pictures was the man he remembers seeing tortured. The man he saw being frozen. And it’s only in that moment he realizes hey, that is me.

(I disagree that this was the exterior of the cryochamber, but the dissociative element is definitely still in play. Great contrast with the end-credit scene too.)
