Day 381 Video/Action: Open

So, we're on day three of whatever this is. And I can't tell you what it's going to be. We've had situations like it before. We've had worse. I'm sure a few of you remember. [There were times the power was off consistently and things got cold and air got thin.] I can tell you being on day three of anything is rare, and I expect something big to follow. Big could be a lot of things.

That means we need to be ready. And when I say "we" I don't just mean the Defense Force. I mean all of us as a community of people. We didn't choose each other and didn't choose this life, but we need to choose each other now. We don't know what's coming or if anything is even coming, but that doesn't change how we should respond—together. We need to be watchful, flexible, and concerned with our neighbors' safety and well being.

The Defense Force is here for that. We have a dispatch line. Call us. We've been tracking this situation since it started. Help all of us out, by helping us get the biggest picture possible for what's happening. It doesn't have to be something life threatening, but definitely call us for that too. It can just be something that's unusual or doesn't make sense. That means a lot of calls, but it's okay. It's part of the job and that doesn't just go today or when I open up a line to everyone. It's every single day and you'll need to know that because we're getting through this. There's going to be a tomorrow and a day after and one after that.

Put yourselves in the best situation you can. Now, we've scouted supplies and we're still doing good, so I want people to make sure households have blankets and warm clothes. It's not something we usually need a lot of here, but it will come in handy if temperatures keep dipping. I am not saying hoard these things. You go, you get just what you need. Because, remember, we're watching out for each other here. If you're running out of a resource vital to you or you need help you call dispatch or me or any force member you know.

You have ideas? Self heating structures, ways to make the food supply stretch if needed, secure crafts that might be able to make it to the surface if we could get through the dome, anything that's going to prepare for the common good? Talk to us. Let us help work on those plans, so they can get accomplished faster.

Keep each other's spirits up. Talk to people. Listen. Do something generous or kind just because you can. Just because we're not going to fall apart when they make the lights flicker. We're stronger than that if we stand together. If we don't let fear paralyze us. If we don't limit our thinking or go selfish. We're Marina Fucking Nova, and the wardens can't break us.

[She didn't expect to go on like that. She had a few bits of sensible precautions and reminders to deliver, but it just got more impassioned as it went on. She cares. She cares more than she usually shows. She cares more than she even realizes. These people—even the ones she hasn't met yet are her people now. Her protectorate. Her community. Her team. Her family.]

[ACTION : OPEN]

[She can be found doing a careful sweep of the prison with a notepad and everything so she can record any details that might be useful. She's going to go through all of the facilities while she's at it.]

[Yuuki spots her while doing her own patrol. Running to catch up, she lifts an arm up with a wave.]

Kitty-san! [It doesn't take long to fall in beside her.] Nothing new to report? Outside of the obvious?

Hey. [And she wishes she could tell the girl there is something. A clue. Something to fight. Something to make sense of it all like a rosetta stone for mysteries.] There really isn't. Last sweep said supplies were doing okay. Lower than normal, but not exactly low in most cases. Fresh anything has a shorter lifespan. [These are all things Yuuki probably already knows but saying something is about as close to doing something as they have.]

[So in the end there really isn't anything to report. She sighs.]

I'm planning to go take a peek in Sector Six to see how things are doing over there. [Although it's not... particularly her favorite sector. In fact she's never really been. But it would be good to know if anything seems strange.]

Be careful, Yuuki. It'll be good to know what's going on in there especially if it doesn't match up to out here, but there are a lot of surprises. [She knows the girl is powerful, but then there are things like the pearls that can control your emotions. And if that's in there, what else is it hiding?]

[She hasn't... visited the much more wild sector really, so she'll definitely keep it in mind.]

Don't worry. I promise to keep extra alert.

That was a nice speech. If we ever decide we need a president, you're a shoe-in.

[Please talk to him, he is nervous and doesn't have many friends to bother.]

You say the unlikeliest things. Then again I was elected among the force for this position. People make strange choices. [She wasn't even unopposed!]

Putting you in a position of leadership isn't that strange. [It's not like she's a crazy person who will almost inevitably lead the remnants of humanity to their destruction or anything.]

So what's your honest assessment of the situation? Are we going to die slow, virtual deaths only to come back and do it over and over again?

[She would almost definitely not do that.] It honestly could be anything. Getting up to three days of the same thing is rare. It means at least some of what we come to expect is being thrown out the window. It could continue as it is and we'll need to be prepared to ration and build alternative power sources if it does.

But I suspect something else is coming. Something big. Probably something new and different. A change of environment maybe? New wardens? I don't know. It's open ended. [Which makes it impossible to really plan and prepare for. Staying loose and able to react as a group is the best she's got right now.]

If it doesn't let up, I might be able to help. I've been hoarding nonperishables since I showed up and I'm sure I could rig a generator. [He also offers postapocalyptic home decorating techniques and lessons in cooking with strict rations!]

That sounds better than dying, I suppose.

If they want us dead they'll have to try a lot harder than this. Seems like a waste of resources. [Though the first two generations are all dead or at least gone now.]

But that would be good. People will need training in that. [Which she can help offer too, but she has a feeling Gaeta's might be a little smoother. He worked with more people regularly. The X-Men helped refugees when they could, but often it wasn't to do more than prevent a violent end for them. They were still fending for themselves otherwise.]

Is it a waste of resources? If our experiences here are simulated, then watching us die doesn't cost them all that much.

Does your force have a division devoted to this sort of thing? I'm sure the prison doesn't break down all that often, but having a system in place could come in handy. [Not that he's in any way involved with it or in a position to make suggestions. He backtracks.] It's probably not worth it, considering how infrequently this happens.

[She's quiet a moment.] If this has nothing to do with the real prison and is entirely a simulation not echoing back to our real bodies then, no. No reason not to watch us die. [Maybe watching them live is getting old. And it's not like they have any evidence to prove it has anything to do with anything but the simulation. How could they?]

We don't really have enough people to separate them out into another division. We try to be flexible for whatever comes up. When it flooded we made boats even though there's no boat-making division.

If it did have something to do with the real prison, I don't understand why whatever's happening there would manifest itself this way here. Real technical issues could disturb this simulation, but that would take the form of... glitches. Irregularities. This seems too intentional to be attributable to error.

[Well, now his suggestion just seems stupid.] I keep forgetting how small Marina's population is. It's amazing that you can even sustain the force at its current size.

I'm not sure. I mean, I agree what you're saying makes sense and I tend to think most of what goes on is intentional. I just wonder how much of the situation down here is dreamlike. Picture your alarm going off in real life and your dream telling you it's something else happening in the dream.

[She didn't mean to make him feel that way. She can get a little defensive about the Defense Force. Maybe because it's in the name? Okay, or maybe just because she largely deals with the opposition alone. It's still not the kind of team she wants it to be. It's not the X-Men.] We do our best. Turnover makes it hard. There aren't a lot of people who quit. [Just her close friends. No big deal.] But disappearing? Well, we're as affected by that as anyone else.

[info]didwhaticould

It could be like that, I suppose. [Except he doesn't want it to be. That idea involves taking a step away from the technical and towards the subjective.] Conjecture seems to be all anyone has.

[Fair enough! He can get defensive about pretty much anything in the right circumstances, so they're even?] How often do people stay here, on average? Weeks? Months?

Mmm, for some it's days. If you last more than two weeks you'll probably be here at least a couple of months.

Assuming the prison survives whatever this is, I'll be sure to make some long-term plans.

Does anyone who leaves and comes back remember experiencing anything between the two? Are we just unplugged and unaware and kept in cold storage when we're not here, or is there something more?

People sometimes have memories of home, but they aren't memories that include remembering being in prison and that same kind of thing can happen here. You could just wake up and suddenly it feels like you have an extra year or so of memories in your head. [And if she sounds little distant as she says it, it's because she hasn't had the best experiences with it happening to other people.]

None at all.

...I take getting other people out seriously though. People shouldn't be held against their wills. I want to stop them from bringing more and get people back where they want to go. If they want to go.

Are there alternatives to going? I'd think that getting out of here would involve shutting this entire simulation down, and living in the physical prison sounds undesirable... if it's even feasible.

We don't even know if going is an option. So, as long as we're making things up we might as well make up alternatives.
