toxicology | day 235 (backdated to afternoon) | open to all!
[ another day, another tox lecture. piter is his usual self today, observant and enigmatic; though he may not particularly enjoy all that tox entails, he quite likes speaking, and his voice has its usual resonant, melodious cadence as he speaks. ]

Conium maculatum, commonly known as poison hemlock, is yet another of the many devilish toxins of the natural world. The unobservant may mistake it for wild carrot, daucus carota, owing to its flowers, but hemlock is nothing so innocuous, though it is indeed a lovely, delicate-looking killer. Every part of the plant is acutely poisonous— even the dead canes remain toxic for up to three years. The Greek language lends hemlock its forename, "conium," from the word konas— "to whirl," for vertigo is a common symptom of poisoning. [ to punctuate this, he gets up from his desk in one quick, calculated movement, and slowly advances on the class. his whiteless eyes gleam as he scours the room, watching any eyes that may be on him. ]

Among the many toxins found in Conium is coniine, similar to nicotine in structure and pharmacological properties. It is markedly potent. Even a small dose can easily result in death: for an adult, the ingestion of more than a tenth of a gram— that is, approximately six to eight fresh leaves, or a smaller dose of the seeds or root— may easily prove fatal. Coniine disrupts the central nervous system and kills by blocking the neuromuscular junction; this results in an ascending muscular paralysis with eventual paralysis of the respiratory muscles, which in turn results in death due to lack of oxygen to the heart and brain. Generally, symptoms appear twenty minutes to three hours after ingestion. [ he continues on for a while, describing further symptoms. in humans: dilation of the pupils, dizziness, and trembling, followed by slowing of the heartbeat, paralysis of the central nervous system, and muscle paralysis; in animals: nervous trembling, salivation, lack of coordination, pupil dilation, rapid weak pulse, respiratory paralysis. in all cases, coma and death are possible, with death typically occurring because of respiratory failure. ]

It is a most dreadful demise. [ piter doesn't seem terribly torn up about that. ] The doomed are helpless, imprisoned in their own failing bodies: limbs heavy and lifeless, heart weak, tongue languid and immobile in the mouth.

A consequence of being from the time that I am is that humanity has grown so vast and dispersed to so many planets, each with their own history, yet Earth has not remained relevant. I know admittedly little of its— indeed, your —history, but there are many things I have come to learn. For instance: in the ancient times of the planet, the country of "Greece" thrived, its city-states populated most famously with philosophers and ruthless warriors, and those that were condemned to death were executed with none other than hemlock. The philosopher Socrates is perhaps the most famous victim of hemlock on Earth; in 399 BC, convicted of impiety, he was to drink a potent mixture imbued with hemlock— and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hemlock, like arsenic, is yet another of those classics that I would be remiss not to pay homage to. So many assassins are taken with its symptoms, for paralytic poisons may be the most merciless of all. Ultimately, however, I find these "classics" to have become dreadfully unimaginative. [ a theatrical frown, followed by a moment of feigned pensiveness. ] Were I to die by any poison, I would prefer that a new and remarkable innovation be christened in my blood— but I believe it goes without saying that I would prefer not to die at all, for I know that you all would be simply lost without Piter.

[ guess who doesn't know how he dies. ]

(( ooc: apologies for the delay; irl classes resuming really kicked me in the pants!! ; n; in any case: tox is held in an open lecture format, so feel free to mingle, even if your character has never attended before; everyone is welcome! piter also tends to pop into mingle threads himself, curious jerk that he is. q&a is here, piter has a thread here, and there's more information on the class here. ))

[Saetan is particularly interested in poisons as a Black Widow, but prefers not to interrupt the class just to have a conversation with someone who shares those interests, so he waits to approach Piter until after he has finished speaking.]

Its interesting to hear the history of a familiar thing from a different world, I must say. Do assassins so commonly rely on poisons where you come from?

Indeed; subtlety and finesse are so often more fitting than overt brutality. [ of course, piter is well aware that there is always a use for brutality. it has its own sort of beauty and convenience, and he values it. ]

The Assassin's Handbook of the third century details the weapons commonly used in a War of Assassins— a limited sort of bellum, in which only the certain deadly devices outlined in the Handbook are permitted. [ an exaggerated frown. ] To limit the involvement of innocent bystanders, you see.

Don't you have Black Widows in your world?

A whole war of assassins? Hell's Fire, that seems a bit extreme. How would such a thing even come about?

“War of Assassins” is but a name, and it is quite simple to beget one: years of hostility between Houses need only be consummated with formal declarations of intent. Such “wars” operate quietly, surreptitiously, between Houses. A universe so vast as mine calls for vast conflict, does it not? When one man may be responsible in title for an entire planet, vastness is a given— and when one such man enters into conflict with another, who in turn governs yet another planet, the threat of total war looms. The object of a War of Assassins is to prevent such extremity.

Where “Black Widows” are concerned: not as you define them, I’m sure. [ a brief, professional shake of the head. ] Do elucidate.

An elegant solution. I rather like it. Some conflicts are only going to be solved by bloodshed, I've found, but this sounds like a clever way of limiting that. People really rule entire worlds in your home?

[Its like hearing a certain hair or eye color doesn't exist; utterly disconcerting. He presses on through the strangeness.] Not like the spider, no. [He turns over his left hand, allowing a better view of the small snaketooth that slides out from under the black nail of his ring finger as he flexes it.] I've been dead far too long for my venom to be lethal anymore, but most are. We can also weave tangled webs to predict the future, but, more importantly, we're immune to poisons. Its rare for someone in your profession to make use of them where I come from, since it can be difficult to tell who they will effect.

Fascinating. [ he even leans in just a bit, peering at that curious condition with real interest dancing in his eyes. ] I should like to know more of this prescience, and of course of the venom— perhaps it would be worthy of a lecture. [ he can't help smirking at his own quip, though he doesn't truly mean it; he is limiting himself for now to the generic: only common, well known poisons. nothing to needlessly provoke too much excitement. ]

But indeed— fiefs of entire worlds are commonplace, even multiple held by one House. [ instantly he thinks, of course, of giedi prime and the quasi-fief of arrakis— arrakis, which piter is sure was destined to be house harkonnen's once more. it will bother him for quite a long time that he may never know whether or not his plan came to fruition. ]

I doubt you want me lecturing on it, puppy, I can drone on all day if no one stops me. [A faint smile. And in any case, the coven has some secrets to it that he would rather not share.] As I said, the venom is typically deadly, although mine won't do much more than cause pain. We can brew poisons as well, of course, but that's a skill anyone can learn with enough dedication.

Hell's fire, what a thought. That sort of power seems like it would be easy to become lost in.

I am no dog. I can comprehend such things. [ his expression darkens slightly, though his tone remains light despite the way his eyes narrow into a pointed look. he could excuse such terms of endearment once, but no more. ]

Does power like your own not make victims of weaker men?

[Mildly, but quite seriously,] It's not meant as an insult, I assure you. Some of the best people I know are dogs. [Who can communicate mentally and give good advice when they're not thinking about walkies and who need to stop telling the tigers its alright to claw up his furniture because really enough is enough.]

Yes, it certainly does. I have a lot of rules I place on myself to keep from becoming a monster, but I'm far from perfect. Until recently I did my best to remove myself from the affairs of the living entirely.

Is this really how you think a class should be taught?

I just don't understand why it would be so difficult to cover the whole subject. Are you just interested in teaching us how to poison people?

[ metaphorically pantsing a mentat. how scandalous! ]

What to do with the information I provide is your choice. [ a flutter of the eyelashes as he shuts his eyes briefly and tilts his head in a gesture almost like a shrug. ] My interest lies in seeing this choice made. [ those eyes snap open, fixed on hers severely and without faltering. ] Will you use it justly, or for wickedness?

[ in truth, this is for the most part merely a facade, another mask— but he would indeed like to know who chooses to use what he teaches for cruelty. it's always good to know who the likeminded individuals in marina are. ]

So you're just giving us a gun and wait to see if we shoot someone? That's a sick game.
