7th-Nov-2009 02:22 pm - Fic Rec: HP_Darkfest Entry, Beyond Measure - Harry, Snape, Alecto, Amycus, NC-17
So one of the things I was always disappointed with in Deathly Hallows is that there was never a big confrontation scene between Harry and Severus.  After their dual in the end of Half-Blood Prince, I expected a rematch where Harry would have a chance to redeem himself.  Sadly, that did not happen.

However, now there is this story entry over on Live Journal in the HP-Darkfest comm, and although it's not a dual-rematch, it certainly hits my kink buttons.

Just mind any warnings, and even though it doesn't say, there is some really squicky het in there too...and that says something about the darkness of this great story to be able to cause my stomach to churn!

I can't seem to get the bar to show properly, it keeps showing up right under my icon. What's with that? Anyone have any idea how to fix it.

But anyway ... here's an update on my word count. I've had a really good couple of days. No one needed any help and Himself is working on the bulldozer. I'm not allowed in the shop while they're doing any sort of 'pull' job. Right now they pulled the right side master push cylinder and they're working on the water pump. Everything is way too heavy for me to be any help so I've got the house to myself and I'm writing. Yay!

Ahem ... so here it is:

I just thought you should all like to know that yesterday was a very, very important day for me.

One of the hallmarks of hypo-thyroidism is... puffy fingers or swollen hands. Because of this latest bought of adventure on the Thyroid Seas, I have not been able to wear my wedding band for about three years or so. In fact, I've been wearing my paternal grandmother's ring for about a year now, so that I didn't feel "unmarried." However, yesterday, on a whim, I picked up my wedding band and slipped it on and you can see the result here...

The Return of My Wedding Band

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am!! And I'm still wearing it! The Husbandly One congratulated me and said that perhaps the current dosage of thyroid hormone is working for me. I think he may be right! We'll see if the endocrinologist agrees in two weeks!

*dances off, ridiculously happy*
6th-Nov-2009 08:37 pm - EKP IS BACK
After a week and a half of pulling our hair out and shaking angry fists towards Luxembourg, we finally got back to what we should've been doing all along -- promoting this bloody Show! Yes, free publicity, RTL, why do you make this so hard?

The situation's not ideal by any means. Instead of capturing clips directly from the video stream like we used to, now we're stuck spending literally hours on screencaptures. It's totally draining -- the RTL player is, quite frankly, crap. Everytime it stalls, I have to rebuffer and restart the recording. On about a third of the files the soundtrack comes out wonky. And even at its best, the quality is jerky because it is, after all, a string of screencaps. THANK GOD THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN BEFORE REUNION!

Still! We posted episode* and we're getting comments again (they are like a drug, I tell you!) and I'm going to sit here and drink wine and spam like whoa. And if I have enough wine, I just might make a defiant "you can't take the Show sky from me" vid.

Hope you're all ready for an awesome weekend!

* This episode was nabbed before we left for Germany; it's not representative of the new stuff we're getting. You'll know what I mean when you see those in a few days. Boy, will you know what I mean.

6th-Nov-2009 05:51 am - How to view another journal with my layout
I'm terrible about posting here, but I'm trying to get better.

I have a techie question though about Insane Journal.

On LiveJournal, I can click a setting to view other journals in my layout.

Does anyone know how I can do that here on InsaneJournal?  I'm having trouble reading a comm journal because of the colors.
6th-Nov-2009 08:45 am - Sniffles and has cold
So I'm looking for a new flat, because although I seem to be freeish of bed bugs, I'd like one where the roof doesn't leak.

Fussy, I know.

So I have one set of agents that cll me all the time asking me if I'm still looking. But have no actual properties. Certainly none they want to show me by email. I'm just supposed to turn up on spec. I don't think so. The last time I did that it was Limehouse and next to rubble and condemned flats. Or as I like to call it rapists' ally. Certainly led me to refine the search by removing Docklands light railway from transport routes. Huge stairs, one small lift for the whole of the commuting mass? Not going to work.

I have one set that deigned to talk to me, have arranged a viewing, but not given me the address. Because that would be too easy.

Another set talked to me and showed me some nice properties but the one I really liked isn't available until 31 January which is too late for me. The one next door is one bed and the same price. V odd, but I'm going to have a look.

Another set called and left a message. The flat is south of the river. ~is brave and open minded~ They had another one listed, a beautiful converted synagogue (which would have felt odd and wrong in a way that converted churches are not) but then I used google view and found it was in Tower Hamlets! Tower Bleeding Hamlets! One of the most deprived places in London, and all the flats I'd have to walk past to get to the tube were glazed with cardboard cf Rapists Alley 2.

In short, this is all being rather difficult. And estate agents are shits who can't do their job properly.

And liars. How they lie.

Chugging right along. I'll have some making up to do this weekend. Saturday I'm teaching my second bookbinding class. Pamphlet and Chap book this time.

And a later class is going to be aimed at artists.

I have bought two or three watercolor journals and given them all away. I like hot press paper 140lb because I use a combination of pencil, stick and pan colors and the pencils don't work well on cold press, let's not even talk about rough. So I wound up making my own. I'm going to teach a class on making your own journal book.

5th-Nov-2009 07:48 pm - Fic: Immovable Unspeakable meets Irresistible Wizard
Since the HD Career Fair is over, this is my repost of my fic. It's posted at DW because it's slightly too big for IJ.

Title: Immovable Unspeakable meets Irresistible Hit Wizard
Author: [info]alisanne
Challenge: Written for the 2009 [info]hd_career_fair.
Rating: NC-17
Pairing(s): Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy, Percy Weasley/Hermione Granger (implied), Blaise Zabini/Luna Lovegood (implied)
Summary: Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy are just average, ordinary wizards working in dull positions at the Ministry and leading average, ordinary lives. Or, at least, that's what they'd like everyone -- including each other -- to believe.
Warnings: AU
Word Count: ~10,800
Author's Notes: Inspired by an irresistible prompt from [info]orpheus_samhain, who requested Draco as a MoM appointed hitman, very sikrit, Minister wouldn't like the public to know that from time to time he orders a murder; Harry is an Unspeakable. Somehow their paths cross during one of Draco's assignments, that so happens to be one of Harry's, only he's expected to achieve the opposite effect. If they know each other outside their work is a bonus. Requested additions: a knife, hood, night, champagne. Orpheus, I hope this is what you imagined.
Thank you to the [info]hd_career_fair mods for hosting this fest and to [info]eeyore9990 and [info]sevfan, without whom this story would have made much less sense.
Recognizable content belongs to JKR, with some plot elements borrowed from the hilarious movie, Mr and Mrs Smith.

http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_political/4544200.html

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/05/texas.fort.hood.shootings/index.html

It's horrible.

Fort Hood is home to about 60,000 people. It is about the size of a city. It is the world's largest military base.

It happened in the solider readiness center which is the area where soliders get the last medical check-up before shipping out and coming in.

CNN is saying that ABC out of Waco (which is near Kileen) said the shooters named is major Malique Nadal Hassan.

There is 12 dead. 11 are victims. Of those 11 one was a civilian cop contracted as military police. One of those civilian MP's killed the shooter.

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/reports-of-mass-shooting-at-fort-hood/?hp

Update | 7:41 p.m. Given that Thursday’s shooting spree took place at a readiness center, where troops were about to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, the subject will certainly turn to combat stress. A description of the work of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, where Major Nidal Hasan, the suspected gunman who was killed on Thursday at Fort Hood, says this:

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) addresses both the invisible and visible wounds of war through research, education and consultation. The invisible wounds of war include the mental health consequences of deployment. These can range from normal distress to the treatable mental disorders of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Warrior wounds can also involve health risks such as increased use of tobacco, alcohol and/or drugs that can result in violence to self, spouse and/or children.

Update | 7:22 p.m. Information about Dr. Nidal Hasan posted on a Virginia Board of Medicine Web site includes a note that he saw patients at Darnell Army Medical Center Monday through Friday.

Officials: Shooting suspect discussed suicide bombings, other threats online
Thursday, November 5, 2009, 07:30 PM

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

“To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause,” said the Internet posting. “Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers.”

Official: Fort Hood shooting suspect not dead
By American-statesman staff | Thursday, November 5, 2009, 08:17 PM

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspect in the Fort Hood shootings, has not been killed and is in stable condition at a hospital, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a press conference at Fort Hood.

He is in custody at an undisclosed hospital, Cone said.

Three soldiers taken into custody after the shootings were released, he said. Investigators believe Hasan acted alone.

“Evidence does not suggest this was a terrorist event,” Cone said.

One of the first people to shoot Hasan was a civilian police officer who was shot but survived, said Cone, who added that earlier reports of a civilian officer dying were incorrect.

First, the WTF:

One shooter in custody, two at large in Ft Hood shootings

This is breaking right now. The schools in the area are on lockdown and the post is, as well. Stay safe, flisters in the area!

And while I was at HuffPo following up on the first story, I saw this: Parents want threesome episode blocked from CW

Okay, so Gossip Girl, which I don't watch, has an episode coming up where three of the characters engage in a menage a troi. A parents group, Parents Television Council, is asking for the episode to be pre-empted or pulled, cause Susie and Jimmy's eyes might fall out.

Note to Stoopid Parents: The BEST way to ensure that your kids will do something that you don't want them to do is to POINT IT OUT IN A LOUD AND PUBLIC MANNER. Jesus, the ratings for that episode are gonna be off the hook!!!

And your fear that Susie and Jimmy might wanna have group sex? They probably already are. *shrugs* I'm just saying.
5th-Nov-2009 03:27 pm - *typing away madly at the screen*

5000 / 50000 words. 10% done!

I'm behind on my word count still but I got 2,000 words typed for it already and I'll be getting more done soon. I hope.

I finished my late fandom obligation which finally when I only had 100 words left to type, I finally knew what I wanted to write so someday soon I'll have to finish that but I have other fandom obligations ready to type. So... it'll have to wait now that I posted the rough draft.

I've got a fic rough draft due tomorrow that's gone from 0 words to 1,000 words. I've only got 4,000 words left to write. And I've got more caffeine, guarana, ginseng, B vitamins and other goodness in me than I know what to do with.

I have two more fest fics in various states of doneness that need to be typed and finished.

Off I go to strain my wrists as much as I strained my legs yesterday. Ian and I took a four mile walk to his work and back. My legs are still sore although we did do our usual bare minimum walk this morning.

My eyes are blurry and I'm energized tired but I'm going to keep swimming.
