Dispatch from Edward Kyteler to Dominic Prewett, dated 17 September 1942... [15.03.09|22:27]

dux_bellorum
[Mood |irritated]

Ciphered, warded and sent by special courier:

Prewett:

I need you to go to the Royal Academy in company with Eliot Gardiner and Philip Redferne. I will be attaching you to their office effective immediately. You are to function as bodyguard (and observer) to a man whose real name is probably Joachim Piccard, no matter what Dr Taverner or her agents tell you it is; they will probably call him Raphael Trevelyan. You will work with Gardiner as long as this man is working on the machine that he and Gardiner used to end a lightning rain in Londinium earlier this week. If he is in fact Piccard he is a defector from the Axis, but not one who is willing to go through any of the normal channels, and therefore, while his safety is absolutely crucial to the war effort, he is by no means to be trusted. Among other things, he may very well be responsible for the murder of Vikram Ayyar. I want to know whatever you learn.

WARNING: sexual content in letter.

Letter is very carefully warded and sealed; unreadable to anyone other than the recipient. Slipped inside a normally sealed and addressed envelope for benefit of the mundane post:

Darling Michaela,

Please forgive me for the antiseptic tone of my earlier letter... )

Letter from Eliot Gardiner to Corinne Allison, 17 Sept 1942... [11.02.09|23:54]

[Mood |rushed]

Securely warded, in reply to her letter:

Dear Corinne,

I'm sorry I haven't been able back to you sooner, but Kyteler is sending us up to the Academy to deal with what I hope doesn't turn out to be another situation like the one we were in. He suggested I ask you to come along, since you've got experience that would be invaluable.

Let me know soon, because we'll be leaving as soon as we can get ready.

Sincerely,
Eliot

Letter from Emmeline Wilkes to her cousin Endymion Dashwood, 17 Sept 1942... [07.02.09|19:54]

wont_be_ignored
[Mood |amused]

In reply to his previous letter, written on the parchment he sent her which is warded so that only he can read it:

Dear Endymion,

Mother has been alternating between looking like the cat who caught the canary and the canary itself. I don't know what you told her, but I approve. She didn't even object when I picked dance for my extra subject instead of tennis. Alas, chemistry is not one of the options for my year but I am quite certain that with your help I could do interesting things with cookery.

I'm sure you were very heroic during the siege. Just don't make too much of a habit of it - it can be rather dangerous, you know, and I'd miss you terribly.

Love, Emmy

Letter from Marek Červenka to Jenica Popescu, 17 Sept 1942 [07.02.09|00:19]

[Mood |pleased]

Strongly warded, using hunters’ wards, in reply to her letter:

Dear Jenica,

It sounds like you have been very busy there. I am glad you are safe after everything that has happened. I know it is your job to help deal with things such as demons but I do worry about you. I do not know what it is you are seeing in the chapel; I have never heard of anything like it. Have you asked the Ziteks? I trust your judgement but one can never be too careful.

I am glad you are making friends, and of course Nadya can come visit. I am sure the Ziteks would have no problem with that.

You are quite right that people who have not been through hard times do not understand people who do. Tell your friend Dashwood that if he is as good as you say there is certain to be work for him here as my apprentice, though you understand I cannot say anything about what he might be working on.

I am glad to hear you are working hard on experiments but do not neglect your other classes. If you need any more books please do let me know.

Best wishes,
Marek Červenka

PS: Tell Zsuzsanna that yes, I am eating regularly, and that I hope she is looking after herself too.

Paired slate message from Dracaena Leffoy to Nicodemo Malaspina, late afternoon 17 September 1942 [29.01.09|12:50]

dracaena
[Mood |terrified]

Uninterceptible.

Kyteler using war powers, gave order to evacuate, but Churchill (who still doesn't understand why we shouldn't just blast planes out of the sky for him) doesn't see why he should reroute all the trains. Carriage-based evac contra-indicated--cousin says problem is coming in thru Q7 which means it will hit Faerie first. R Minor said she should STAY THERE. (Yvon says to leave it alone, they're friends, doesn't it figure? Want to knock all four of their hard heads together--him, Alessio, her and R Minor.) Keresek convinced the King of the North will return. Almost to the point where I'd turn it all over to him if he wanted me to.

Nobody thinks they will hit us here. Told Lavinia of course they won't. None of my heirs are here and they know what happens when they try to kill ME.

Love you.

Come home. The books can wait.

Divination and astronomy lessons for the remainder of the day have been cancelled. I will be unavailable for the rest of the day as I will be in consultation. Lessons will resume tomorrow on the normal schedule.

Please do not be alarmed. We are working together to ensure the safety of the Academy for everyone concerned.

Note from Moruith myr'Steren to Addie Kyteler, dated 17 September 1942... [29.01.09|10:14]

moruith
[Mood |worried]

Warded with faerie wards that will come undone only for Addie:

Addie:

They are driving me mad. If things were not as serious as they are right now I would try to find a room without chalkboards, chalk, paper or ink and lock them up in it together.

But I want you to know, there is probably going to be trouble tonight. We went on patrol, I know you have some kind of duty like that--keep track of your charges.

There were visions in one of the divinatory classes, and they tried to do 'horary', and 'gematria', and they can't find anything out because 'they can't identify a final dispositor' and 'too much is void-of-course'. There is trouble 'rolling in along the antiveridical'. I'm not sure what that means, but I know 'veridical' is the direction that we come from.

They've gone to go and meet with Goyle. I told her I needed to go get some air (and I do). In Avalon she was saying that she wouldn't leave without Michel or Florian, but Goyle told her he thought she should go like the other queen (I don't know who that would be, Lady Dracaena is not a student here recently) had done. I think Goyle has been talking to someone called Kyteler, that is your name too, so it must be your father.

Also your brother's friends from Eastern Europe, or maybe they are the Fairlight's friends, are here as well, talking with them and someone I heard Miss Flint call 'Jenny Popescu'.

M.

Dispatch from Lilias Wilkes Taverner to Edward Kyteler, dated 17 September 1942... [28.01.09|23:25]

doctortaverner
[Mood |smug]

Securely sealed and warded, sent by bonded courier directly to the office of the Dux Bellorum:

Ned:

I know what happened during the last lightning rain in Londinium and that it was reversed by the actions of Eliot Gardiner working in co-operation with an individual calling himself Raphael Trevelyan, into whose past you have made some inquiries.

This individual has entered my service and as I do understand the importance of this work to the war effort, I am willing to attach him to Gardiner's office.

However, I am sure you will appreciate that it is I who will be 'debriefing' him.

I understand that there are difficulties now concerning the Academy, as Mrs Walsingham has overheard a bit of that, and that you are much occupied with those; but as it seems to me that you may need him very shortly, I expect to hear from you soon.

I shall tell him not to make any romantic plans for the evening, as he is likely to be occupied. Of course I do hope this will not be the case.

Letter from Jezebel Walsingham to Lilias Wilkes Taverner, 17 Sept 1942 [28.01.09|23:10]

septenary
[Mood |smug]

Strongly warded and sealed

Dr Taverner:

This trip has been quite profitable; I have more than enough evidence to show that this school is one step away from anarchy. It should be shut down, but definitely not put in the charge of the Leffoys or any of their creatures. Such as Goyle, who seems far more concerned with the school's artifices than its students.

No, it is most assuredly time to make a fresh start, with new teachers and a new curriculum. The current state of affairs is quite appalling; the Beasts class is taught by a foreigner who seems to have no credentials whatsoever, and who has some very strange ideas regarding Entities. Defence, likewise, appears to be taught by whoever is available. I fear for the future of this country if this is allowed to continue.

Rumours of a possible lightning rain run rampant; I have been unable to determine if there is any basis to this or whether it is yet another symptom of the chaos which afflicts the students.

But my other task has been fruitless; the Dashwood boy has eluded me.

Sincerely,
Jezebel Walsingham
