Owls from Alice Diggory, dated 15 September 1942
All sealed and warded quite well
To Mercy Thomas:
Dear Mercy,
Bill has been in the hospital since yesterday and there has been all kinds of worry, much of which I don't think I can even commit to paper, but he had pneumonia and rest assured that he is now healed in some very impressive manner Mungos has developed. (Specifically, something that Alessio Zabini has developed, I imagine you must know him.) The other concerns continue to be a problem: in due time you may wish to send your natal data to Dr Wilkes here to be examined. Isaac has also recommended this to Frank.
If you are able to visit us here before Bill is discharged — I can't think that that would be today — please do. Frank is probably sending Hortense down on the train from Bletchley (he doesn't think to promise to come himself, women's business, don't you know?) But I know that you as a parent (Poppaea being, of course, but a uterus, although I do hope with you as you know that soon you will combine the roles) will at least think of us here, even if you cannot come. Most of the stations should be open again after last night, even Elizabeth and I could not get in last night.
Love,
Alice
