WHO: Juniper and Jack Harkness
WHEN: Day five, afternoon
WHAT: Meeting
WHERE: In the courtyard
RATING: TBA (it is Jack, after all)
STATUS: Incomplete

After spending the greater portion of the day with Edward, talking, eating and listening to him playing the piano, Juniper decided that she definitely needed a nap. Between breaking her own hand on Armand's face, the recurring blood loss from that meeting and the ones before it, and the fact that she'd most definitely overexerted herself, she was running on fumes. It took a bit of convincing, but eventually Edward had to admit that she was perfectly safe sleeping during the day, and that if he was there, she probably wouldn't get much sleeping done to begin with. Besides, he'd be there the instant the sun went down anyway.

His goodbye kiss left Juniper a little loopy, and she grinned to herself as she toddled her way across the courtyard toward her dorm. For being kidnapped and trapped without a link home, her life was a pretty amazing one. And that was what she was paying attention to, instead of where she was going, when she slammed into a man she'd never seen before, tripping all over herself and grabbing on to him with her unbraced hand, to keep herself from hitting the ground.

"Whoops," she laughed, looking up at him and grinning. "Sorry about that, luv."

The morning had, at least, started off well: Jack had gotten coffee. What more could a man ask for than that? Not much as far if you ask him. (Well, there were other things, but where Jack was concerned, finding a good shag went without saying.) He still, though, wasn't sure what to do about Ianto and it wasn't like there were many he could talk to about this.

Discussing it with the Doctor would wind up in him being mercilessly mocked for actually caring what someone else thought of him and having to work for a shag... and Rose? Yes, he was fairly certain there was mocking to be had there too. And Jack didn't fancy a bruised ego at present.

He'd taken a walk in an attempt to clear his mind, apparently joining the girl in the realm of not watching where he was going. He wasn't sure who hit who, only that the resulting impact stung, though looked like the girl was worse for wear. Instinctively, Jack shot a hand out, wrapping around her waist and dragged her against his body to keep her from falling over.

"I'd chide you for not watching where you're going, but I'm afraid I'm just as at fault. All right there?" Jack's eyes flicked towards her bandaged hand. "You OK?" He asked again, this time not meaning their 'running into' of each other.

Juniper was normally a graceful person, and could have steadied herself easily, but she was still grateful that the man she'd slammed into had taken the means to make sure she didn't hit the ground. "Brilliant, thanks," Juniper smiled. "Nice catch."

Her eyes followed his gaze to her splinted hand and she shrugged. "Cracked a couple of knuckles," she admitted with a humorless laugh. It seemed so long ago, though it had only happened that morning. But then, so much had happened, it wasn't a surprise. "A friend splinted it for me, but it seems that what this mad place is lacking is a proper hospital."

"I'm Juniper," she offered, along with her left hand, which was mildly awkward, but it was the best that she could do. Then Juniper winced, turning her face away for a second as if avoiding a blow. "That's some wall you've got," she commented, looking at him again with her head tilted to the side curiously. "No, not a wall..."

Then she blinked and laughed a little. "Sorry, I'm a telepath and you're...I can't get anything from you. It's like you're not there. Very odd."

A pretty girl slams into him? Why yes, Jack was going to hang onto her, operating under the impression of 'finder's keepers'. "Thanks," Jack replied with a wink, holding onto her a bit longer than was absolutely necessary. Wasn't his fault, really -- just a default reaction.

"That looks worse than cracking a couple of knuckles," Jack observed, shrewdly examining the splinted hand. "I've had my fair share of breaks and that looks a mite bit worse than just a few cracked knuckles." He paused, tilting his head to the side and then nodded. "You're right. There is no hospital around here. I hadn't even noticed." When a man didn't get sick, healed fairly bad breaks and sprains, and couldn't die? Finding hospital locations was fairly low on the list of priorities.

"Captain Jack Harkness," Jack replied, taking the offered left hand with a smile. He could do one better, lifting the hand to his lips and brushed his lips across her good knuckles. Hiding his face behind her hand afforded him the chance for a quizzical expression that she didn't see. After a moment, though, he dropped her hand and straightened back up once more.

"A telepath trying to get a reading on me without my permission?" Jack asked, raising his eyebrows to practically his hairline. Which was exactly why Jack shielded himself, though now,it was more out of habit. "So, why are you trying to look through my mind, Juniper?"

Juniper waved him off. "It's not that bad, honestly," she assured him with a smile. Okay, so it hurt quite a lot, but there was nothing to be done about that except wait until it healed, right? It wasn't as if she had a magic wand to wave over it or anything. "It just happened this morning, so it looks worse than it is, I'm sure."

"Nice to meet you, Captain," she said, and couldn't help but giggle a little bit at the formal greeting, her cheeks colouring up prettily. Happily taken or not, a girl couldn't help but like it when treated like a lady.

Juniper winced. "Not exactly," she told him. "I wasn't trying, honestly. I have very good control, and generally respect the privacy of others," she assured him, running her good hand through her curls and then smoothing the same hand down her long skirt. "But even then, I get a sense about people. Woman's intuition, or first impression radar, or whatever you'd like to call it. And I get absolutely nothing from you. It's odd," she shrugged. "I didn't go poking around, and wouldn't," she promised. "That would just be rude."

Jack merely looked at the splint and raised his eyebrows. He had his fair share of breaks and injuries and knew that knuckles hurt a fair bit. But good for her for putting on the brave face at least. He had to give her credit for that, didn't he?

It was all about treating a woman like a woman... and a man like a man -- and Jack had his experience with both. Though, truth be told, his experience was generally used to charm his way into the knickers or pants of anyone, regardless of species. "The pleasure is all mine," Jack said, finally releasing her hand and shoving his own into the pockets of his trousers.

"What were you expecting to find from me?" Jack asked, lifting an eyebrow. "What's this 'women's intuition' you usually pick up on when first meeting a bloke?"

Juniper considered that question, and looked him over carefully, her head tilted to the side and a little smile playing around her lips. Unable to get into his head or not, she was good at reading people, and so took in everything about the Captain that she could before giving him her answer. And in all of that, she liked what she saw. Quite a bit.

"Too charming for your own good...reckless to a fault...chivalrous..." Obviously, both from his catching her and the greeting, that wasn't hard to guess. "And a bit..." Juniper bit her lip and tried to figure out the best way to put this without being offensive. "Morally gray," she finally said with a decided nod.

Then she grinned. "Close?"

If Juniper was going to look him over as if he were a side of meat (which, he supposed, wasn't the worst simile in the world) well he was certainly going to look his fill as well. She looked young, but age had never been much of a deterrent where Jack was concerned. Jack was a good two thousand years older than anyone and would, consequently, always be a cradle robber. Once Jack got backup to her face he gave her a slow, lazy smile.

He may or may not have been undressing her with his eyes. In other words, typical Jack.

"Morally grey?" Jack asked, cocking his head to the side. "Now that's quite the assessment." And strangely astute too. Knowing that he was blocking any of her attempted mental advances, Jack wondered what about him gave off that impression -- even if she was quite correct.

"A man never gives away his secrets," Jack said, winking. "But I'll give you this much: fairly close on all accounts. But I am never too charming for my own good. I'm just the right amount of charming."

Though she wasn't being nearly as thorough as all of that, Juniper did notice the way he was looking at her, and pretty much ignored it. The complement was nice, of course, but that was all she took away from the experience of having the eyes of one Captain Jack taking a walk all over her body.

She wasn't even bothering to mentally poke at him. He was a dead zone for Juniper, and besides, the game of figuring him out without the aid of her natural ability was entertaining. She shrugged at his comment, smiling. "I'm good."

Juniper laughed and shook her head. "You're trouble is what you are," she corrected. "That grin says it all."

"If you weren't heading off anywhere important...fancy a walk?" she invited. "I reckon you've got a story or two to tell, Captain."

She may not have been as thorough as Jack imagined, but that could also have been a bit of the ego coming into play. Who wouldn't want to look him over? Why yes, humble was Jack's middle name. Along with innocent.

The grin broke into one that threatened to split his face in half, the impish sparkle entering his eye. "The grin says trouble? I always thought it was genuine and why people flocked to me. Never thought the true translation was going to be trouble." He tapped his chin thoughtfully. "Then again, trouble usually finds me, so I suppose you'd be correct in that assumption."

He shook his head and offered Juniper his arm. "Off nowhere special, but you're welcome to come." Jack tutted softly. "Perhaps a story or two. And I'm sure you have just as many. Trade you story for story."

Chuckling, Juniper tapped her nose with the tip of her finger and then pointed it at Jack briefly before dropping her hand. "And that is why it's trouble. Particularly when combined with your morally ambiguous nature. I weep for the hearts you've broken, luv," she teased with a shake of her head.

"Love to," she beamed, taking his arm easily and falling in step. There was something she was trying to peg about Jack, from the way he dressed to his manners to his seemingly bulletproof demeanor, but he was a harder nut to crack than she was used to. People were generally so easy, it was both frustrating and thrilling, all at once. "A story..." she muttered thoughtfully, trying to decide which one to tell him out of her many.

"Long ago, before America had even been discovered by the Spanish," she said with a little smile and a nod at the American at her side. "There was a little girl who heard voices, and had visions, all telling her that it was up to her to save the land that she so loved. She crowned kings and lead armies, heralded as a saviour, a saint, a hero out of legend, the Maid of Lorraine. And yet she stayed simply to herself, trusting in what she knew to be true, despite all that wished to push her down to be something less than she was. She was nineteen when she burned as a witch, and all the while that the flames licked at her skin, she only wished that those that were her executioners would gain forgiveness for their crimes." Juniper finished with a sad little smile. She was much less merciful now.

"The hearts I've broken?" Jack laughed, tossing his head back, eyes sparkling with mirth. "I don't think you have time to weep for all the hearts I've broken."

Jack lightly patted the hand that rested on his arm, glancing sidelong at Juniper every now and again. Who was this girl who could so easily break through the mental barriers of others? Jack himself had little psychic skill -- enough to get by and to keep himself tightly guarded, but he lacked finesse when it came to prowling in a mind. Which was why he never did it. There were far more enjoyable ways of getting information and those Jack was very adept at.

Lifting an eyebrow, Jack stopped walking the moment she finished her story. He didn't say anything, other than realising he may have found a kindred spirit, someone who understood longevity. "Something tells me its less a story and more a memory. Your memory to be precise."

It seemed to be more, and less, than any psychic ability that Jack possessed that kept Juniper out, and though she couldn't yet put her finger on it, there was something enduring, almost out-of-time, removed from it, that Juniper suspected was keeping her out.

Turning slightly when he stopped, Juniper looked up at her new friend and smiled sheepishly, shrugging one shoulder. "It's far healthier to remember the truth than to hide in fairy tales," she said. "At least, that's what I keep telling myself."

"And what about you, Captain Harkness?" she asked, giving him a half-smile. "What's your excuse, for being the way you are?" Juniper asked, looking up at him like she could see the cogs moving in his mind.

Well, if it was out-of-time that was keeping Juniper out of his mind, Jack had that quality in spades. Of course, here where ever they were, all of them could be considered out of their element, but Jack had that extra 51st century-ness built into him. Not to mention living for far longer than any man had the right to. Jack wondered, briefly, if he was older than the Doctor by now.

"After a certain point when you count the years behind you, one doesn't take pleasure in making up stories any more. Why make up stories when the truth almost sounds more fanciful than a lie?" Jack shrugged ever so slightly, picking up their pace once more.

Just because Jack didn't lie did not mean he wasn't above muddying the truth either. Particularly when it came to his own past. That was one thing Jack didn't like too many people knowing: his true story. Those at Torchwood did and that was, in Jack's opinion, four too many. "My excuse?" Jack asked, shrugging ever so slightly. "Nothing more than a man not from this time. Flew with the 133rd during the second world war. And did my fair share of battle in the trenches in the first." Let her makeof that what she would.

Which was basically just what she'd said, so Juniper just nodded and smiled, falling back in step with Jack, not looking around, but instead, looking at him. He was by far the most fascinating thing in the general vicinity, after all.

Juniper smiled. "And yet, you're an American, and at the very least, ninety-five years old," she pointed out, doing the math very quickly in her head. But then again, she was from nineteen-ninety-five, and hadn't figured out that she was out of her time yet, so she was off by a good decade and change.

She considered that for a moment and then looked at Jack's mouth. Not that that was a decided indicator, but he looked and felt human enough. Definitely not like Edward or Armand did. "You either have the best plastic surgeon in the universe, or you're immortal," she finally said with a shrug. "Because the way you talk, the way you act...you're not from the forties."

She could go on thinking he was an American as, if the accent fit, he'd wear it. As for the ninety-five years old bit? Well, she could go on thinking that for as long as she liked. A man liked a woman who could shave a couple millenia off his age -- women weren't the only ones who liked to be younger than they looked (and Jack had all the vanity of a woman wrapped up inside him). "Not bad with the math," Jack said at last, inclining his head ever so slightly. "And you get points for the American bit, though that's not too hard given my accent."

Jack frowned when she looked at his mouth, then, remembering that there were vampires around, completely bared his teeth to her for inspection. "No long eye-teeth here," Jack said, tilting his head this way and then that. "Incisors are all the proper length." The immortal comment, however, gave him pause. Well, that was easy enough to agree to. "I figured the immortal bit went without saying if I managed to survive not one but two world wars." Jack lifted his chin and patted his cheek with a smirk. "No plastic surgeon. One doesn't mess with this level of perfection. Ever.

"And, really, I could be from the turn of the century, couldn't I? I lived through the first world war, so it stands to reason I'd have to be born at the end of the nineteenth century, correct?"

Juniper laughed. "See, the eye-teeth aren't always a solid indicator," she warned. "This bloke I'm seeing, Edward? He has teeth just like you or I. They look perfectly normal," she shrugged.

"Yes," Juniper allowed. "But still, you look far too young to have been born in - at the very earliest, what with military age limits - 1900, have fought in the first World War, and in the second. Even that would make you forty-something, and you don't look forty-something," she laughed. "So why don't you just spill, Captain Jack?" Juniper begged, looking up at him with big eyes. She was fascinated by him, after all.

"But if one is going strictly by the old legends, they are the only indicator," Jack pointed out. Which meant that there were other forms of vampires here. Part of Jack itched to find one and study, to pick it apart piece by piece and see what made it different than the ones the stories spoke of. But there was no Hub and, outside of Ianto, no team to speak of. "You're seeing a vampire?" Jack asked, eyebrows raising to practically his hairline. "You do have a talent for attracting the immortal blokes, don't you?" A pause. "Mind sharing?"

But Jack wasn't going to share quite so easily as all that. He had a reputation to protect, didn't he? "I did agree to the immortal bit," he said with a slight incline of his head. "Technically I believe I look to be about thirty-five years of age. Would that be about right by you?" He frowned. "And why are you so curious?" came the blunt question. Jack lightly tapped Juniper on the nose. "Or are you always this inquisitive?"

"Well then it's a good thing we're not," Juniper laughed. "Because the old legends don't apply to either of the species of vampire that I've run into here. Though one of them...the teeth thing is valid." Juniper chuckled and shrugged. "Immortal...insanely dangerous...take your pick," she admitted. "I've got another one stalking me. He's more of your run-of-the-mill vampire though. Fangs, sun, etc," she shrugged. "Sharing?" Juniper asked with raised eyebrows.

Juniper wrinkled her nose and grinned when Jack tapped it, and shrugged a shoulder. "I like to know things," she said simply, dancing around on the toes of her flats while they walked. "Curiosity killed the cat and all but I-" Juniper broke off, stopped spinning, and made a face, like something had just occurred to her. "Huh. Two lives left." Then she shrugged and smiled again. "I'm bothering you, aren't I?"

Either species? Jack's fingers practically twitched as the desire to examine became near impossible to resist. He'd have to keep his eye out and, briefly, Jack wondered how much of the TARDIS was functioning and if he could convince the Doctor to do some research. Hell, who was he kidding? This was the Doctor. "Most immortals are insanely dangerous," Jack replied. "I'm only mostly dangerous and that's if I don't get any coffee in the morning. Otherwise, I'm decent." Jack nodded, a grin splitting his face. "Yes, sharing. You have two, I have none. The definition of sharing."

Jack truly couldn't fault her for wanting to know things. He had the same desire and want at the end of the day. "But satisfaction brought him back," Jack finished. "I know my fair share of adages." They walked and Jack watched her out of the corner of his eye, amusement sparking in his features. She was a strange one, but oddly endearing as well. "Two lives left?" Jack asked, frowning. "Who has two lives left? And no, you're not bothering me. Enigmatic, perhaps, but not bothering."

"So you're like every other man then. Obnoxious until you're awake," Juniper laughed. "Well fine, Mister Immortal. You can have the one with the fangs, since he's the one that likes to bite me," she offered with a grin. "I'm keeping the other one. I like him."

"It did, it did," she smiled, and then shrugged. "Me, maybe. I don't know. I just had a thought. I've had six lives, and I always thought that I get seven, so this would be the last one," she shrugged. "Seven is such a prevalent number in anything otherworldly, after all. But I always get teased. Called a cat. Too curious, shiny things will amuse me for hours, I love to be pet...that kind of thing. So if a cat has nine lives, maybe I do to," she smiled.

Jack grinned at that, tilting his head -- but it was hard to say if he was agreeing with her or warning her. Jack could be an enigma when he really wanted to. "I suppose that means I'm in the clear since I don't sleep. Well, much, anyway." He shrugged, letting his mind conjure up an image of this vampire. "I'll need a bit more description if I'm going to agree to the fanged-one," Jack replied. "A man has to have some standards, you know."

A far-off look settled itself on Jack's face as they walked, Jack no longer looking down at Juniper. After a pause, he began to speak without realising he was talking aloud. "I once thought I only had so many lives. After I woke up the first time, Ithought it was a fluke. That I really hadn't been shot. Almost two thousand deaths later, I'm beginning to wonder if I have a set number of lives." Catching himself before he said any more, Jack wiped the odd look from his face and, instead, fixed Juniper with a flirtatious smile. "Who knows, maybe you have far more than nine lives. Though I don't think it's something I'd want to be testing anytime soon."

Juniper grinned, shaking her head as she realised that Jack was looking for dating prospects. At least, that's how it seemed. "Let's see...blond. Young...looking, anyway. Very handsome and pretty intense. Pale skin, fangs, telepathic, you know, the traditional vampire business." Juniper paused and considered, then she grinned a bit. "When he bites you...it's better than sex, Jack," she confessed in a whisper. "If he didn't scare the crap out of me..." Juniper trailed off with a loopy roll of her eyes and a little groan. "I think that, for you, he'd be worth looking into." Given that Jack couldn't die, anyway.

That smile made her blush a little, but Juniper was too fixated on what he'd said to get too distracted. "You come back," she said with a shake of her head and a thoughtful look. "Like me? With a whole new body and life and mind and everything? Or like..." she snapped her fingers. "Alive."

Jack was always on the look-out for potential prospects. There may have been only one man h e wanted to date but it didn't preclude him from looking either. No, not in the slightest. "Usually don't go for the blond sorts, but I could make an exception come to think of it." Jack couldn't help but lick his lips, particularly when he saw that grin on her face. "Better than sex, you say?" Jack asked. "With all my experience, I think that's going to be hard to top, but I may have to find this blond vampire you speak of." Jack scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Not like there's much risk anyway," he murmured.

Didn't hurt to talk about it with her, did it? It was usually something Jack held so close to his chest but what did it hurt? Not like it was something that could hurt him, was it? "I come back..." Jack snapped his fingers. "Like that. I'll heal what's wrong with me, if there is anything. Body metabolises things or the skin heals. How is it that you come back?" Jack asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
