Priority Message

To: Bethany Jereldsen, Shangri-La
From: Lt. Daniella Kypros BS-93 Avalon
Re: Anika onboard Avalon

Bethany,

Apparently Sting caught the eye of Major Sykes and he's requisitioned the ship for the next few days. I don't know all the details but knowing Anika she refused to let anyone fly her ship but her.

She's safely onboard Avalon and in no danger. I'll give what details I can once I know more about what's going on. If the brass give the OK I'll insist she bunk with Rhys and myself until this whole thing is over.

Hopefully she'll be able to contact you herself soon.

Regards,
Dani

Anika lay on her stomach on the bed, the pages of Jake's most recent letter in front of her as she read it. The others he'd written all lay in a pile next to her, along with a small stack of blank pieces and a pen. She grinned as she read his description of Dani and how she was going, wondering just what he'd say if she showed it to Dani. She wouldn't, and it was probably one of the best descriptions she'd heard, even if it wasn't particularly complimentary just due to the situation. "Poor Dani," she murmured as she read it. She read through the letter again, as usual, before starting to write one in return. About two to three times a week they would communicate through letters, ship-to-ship communication for personal or private conversations more hassle than they were worth.

They'd spoken a couple of times since the tournament, on the air when he'd happened to be able to get airborne when she was, but otherwise it had all been through letters. Slowly they'd gotten to know each other a little better, their daily routines becoming a familiar thing, plus small snippets of life previous to the Exodus, which would creep in from time to time. She was still a little more cautious with what she wrote, the idea that her letters were going into the massive military maw of Avalon making her a little wary. Even though she usually delivered them on her run to the ship from time to time she didn't know what happened once they left the hands of the young clerk who collected the bag from her on hangar deck each time, exchanging it for one to go back to the central depot ship if she was going that way.

As she came in to land that afternoon,... )

Grave News

Reconnaissance could come in many forms. Intercepted signals, DRADIS reports, photographs... One of the best forms, in the super-cooled vacuum of space, was that of Infra-Red. Glancing over the data and associated analysis passed across her desk in a folder, Admiral Sinclair exhaled slowly, clenching jaw in reaction to what this now meant.

Some observed that interesting times could be a curse. The dillemma confronting her most surely qualified as that. It could mean salvation and damnation in equal measure. It was going to be one for the history books, regardless of the outcome or decision.

She could only hope that such texts would end up being written by human hands.

A few hours later and she had convened a meeting of all available military heads. If Comanders could not make it, then they were to designate a trusted representative. Marines were posted at the door, such was the sensitivity of what was to be revealed. The planning room was one of those areas of the ship which were sealed against electronic signals leaking out, even going so far as to be coated in a special type of paint, upon its construction.

Waiting for the last to file through, Sinclair nodded and the entrance was closed.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you'll have to excuse me for convening at such short notice... I trust you'll understand the need for such precautions, as soon as I reveal the latest and my intentions as for how to deal with it. Please believe me when I say this could be the most lethal engagement of the entire war... Please, also, believe me when I say this has the potential to cripple us, as much as the enemy. Whatever we decide in this room is going to affect our very survival as a species. If any of you feel unable to prosecute what will be asked of you, then I'll want you to make your voice heard, are we agreed?"

Piano lounge

It was the night before the Pyramid tournament and Kobe was able to catch the shuttle to the Shangri-la with a group of other officers who had been invited to spend the night on the resort liner. Some how after a little gathering with tournament event sponsors, the group of Colonial officers in civilian attire escaped to a secluded lounge that had been specially opened for guest and those participating in tomorrow’s tournament. Most importantly it had a cash bar.
