He never would have imagined that the trip from Liberty Island to the New York Public Library would ever have been as difficult as it was now. He remembered going along pretty much the same route once with his family when he was a kid, and even on that never ending tour, time didn't feel so slow. Now there were all kinds of precautions that need to be taken and just getting off the island to the mainland was a trial and a half. There were more swimmers in the water than he remembered being there the last time he has left the island, and the fact that their numbers were increasing was worrisome to say the least. There were more than enough capable people at the safehouse to be able to handle any problem, and the waters were particularly wild and the likelihood of these infected bodies being able to overcome the strong current was unlikely. In spite of this, he still couldn't shake the feeling of dread that hung over him. He tried to play it off on the overcast or the fact that it was December and zombie outbreak or not, it was always a depressing month as all the colors drained to grey everywhere and everything was just cold.
The inside of the Library was so different than what he remembered, not that he expected it to stay the same when everything else has been changed. There were a lot of people inside and he remembered a time when this Library full of people were students cramming for finals and people just milling about, not a group of people surviving the best they can. Every safehouse had the same feeling inside it, there was a false calm and an anxious hum as everyone's collective fear of the infected breaking in gathered and was almost palpable.
He was exhausted from the trip and he just wanted to find a place to collapse and just try to get some rest though he was conflicted with the desire to search the Library for his brother. His entire body was getting stiff however, so he ended up picking a spot and just watched the people, scrutinizing each face to see if it was his brother. He bit back a yawn and leaned against a wall or a bookshelf or something and let the tension in his muscles drain out. He'd been on edge since he'd left Liberty Island and his muscles where thankful for the brief reprieve from his vigilance and preparation to strike. He still had his knives within reach, just in case, but the rifle was on safety and tucked away.
The constant murmuring of the survivors was starting to put him to sleep, but he wasn't sure he was comfortable with just passing out here, not that it mattered what people thought anymore, nor did it ever matter to him how other people viewed him. Since the outbreak, the sense of vulnerability that accompanied falling asleep was causing him to lose hours in the night. He had never been paranoid in his life, but the danger here was real and it never missed a chance to remind you that it existed and punish the ones who think they can truly relax.
But damn he was so tired and Mihael wasn't here.
