It happened fast. To be honest, they didn't know how the woman slipped beneath their radar. She was in a large truckload of survivors, rescued from inside of a bank vault, and she'd been bitten a few days prior. The wound had festered and the delirium of the fever had started to take their toll, and yet in the hustle and bustle of many bodies being escorted into the safehouse, no one took much notice of her. Until it was too late. By then, the symptoms the woman had attempted to hide were in full force. In their fear, no one dared get near her, save for one foolish nurse who believed she couldn't mistake flu-like symptoms in anyone. That was her first mistake. Her second mistake came when the infected woman's heart stopped beating and the nurse began CPR. When no one volunteered to assist with mouth-to-mouth, she took it upon herself. The nurse's third mistake came when she didn't move quick enough when the dead woman's body reanimated. A single bite was all it took, and the entire population of Carnegie Hall exploded in pandemonium. Guards were called in to restore order, though some protested being commanded to leave their posts. They shouldn't leave any of the entrances unguarded, they said; the undead were always drawn to Carnegie whenever new survivors were admitted. Berter, their appointed leader, refused to listen. Having two infected inside the walls of Carnegie had to be dealt with first. Subduing the two women, one of them a leaper who kept tackling guards and survivors, was proving to be more dangerous than they thought. More guards were called in to keep survivors at a safe distance. No one took any notice whatsoever of the weakening boards keeping one of the doors secured. Until it was too late. A loud crash echoed off the walls, followed by the screaming and moaning of the undead as they poured into Carnegie Hall. The safehouse erupted in a panic. "Mayday, mayday, this is Allen Berter, leader of the Carnegie Hall safehouse. The infected have breached our defenses and are attacking. All able bodies please report to the Carnegie Hall Safehouse to assist." It was too late. |
