it's the end of the world as we know it and... (ifeelfine) wrote in immune_ic,
Maybe Lukas was trying to be optimistic by saying that Grand Central Station was safe, but after what Gabriel had just been through with the safehouse he'd spent the past few years in falling, he was going to have a hard time believing that anywhere was safe. Maybe the rest of his family would be there. He could only hope for now, but so far, throughout this whole thing, hope was the only thing that had kept him alive. Especially after he lost contact with his family. "Grand Central seems like an odd place for a safehouse, what with the big gaping holes that trains have to leave through, but I'm taking your word for it."
Gabriel was actually a little bit overwhelmed, but he was sure that the real overwhelmed-ness would hit him later. For now, or once they hit the bus, anyway, he allowed himself to relax. It was a little cramped, but in his seat, there was just enough room for him to lean back against the window. He breathed in deeply and glanced at his brother. "I don't mean to be a downer, it's just… I spent the last few years here, so it's like…" he paused, but he was sure he didn't have to continue.
Wincing and batting at Lukas' hand when he ruffled his hair, Gabriel laughed a little bit and shook his head in amusement. "Hey, I'm pretty tough too, you know," he smirked a little bit. "And even if a time comes when I'm not, I'm fast. Those track trophies weren't just decoration," he teased good naturedly, smile not fading even a little bit from his face. He decided that, at first, it was wise to avoid mentioning that he baited zombies. Lukas wouldn't take that well, if he knew his brother.
"Don't say shit like that, Luke," Gabriel shook his head when Lukas mentioned that Gabriel was the only thing keeping him going. "Makes me worry." And Lukas knew that Gabriel was a worrier, too. "Especially now that you know I'm okay. No stupid heroics or anything or I'll... I dunno, but it won't be good."
He wanted to ask how their family was, if they were alive. He really did. But at the same time, he really didn't. The answer could make him or break him, and while he knew that he'd have to find out eventually, he wasn't exactly eager to break himself down. Instead, he focused on Lukas' last question. "Not a dream. Unless it's one of those weird psychological dreams and I'm having it too. In which case we have some screwed psyches."
