So my mom taught me how to cook at least well enough that I wouldn't burn every damn thing I put in an oven or on a stove. When you are cooking it doesn't matter so much that you are a half teaspoon off of salt or some other spice. If you don't put enough flour in a cake, if you are off a tiny bit, it still is edible.

So why the fuck is it so difficult in potions? What does it matter if I'm a centimeter off on my cutting or I stir once instead of twice? Come on cauldron, get this shit together and stop trying to make me look like an idiot. This is a class I can pass but this shit is way too picky.

Potions is definitely one of the hard ones, especially if you're a hands-on learner. I have a hard time absorbing all that information just from reading a list of steps or even listening to someone explain it to me.

Brewing a potion is more of a ritual than cooking. There is magic in all of the details, and they directly influence the next step. You need to look at your physical actions as something that's just as important as the ingredients.

But that's just fucking stupid. The ingredients of it are there. Why can't I just stand on my head and have it turn out the same way? The details shouldn't be this important.

He's right though. Potions is like any other subject here. Our attitudes widely impact our finished product, same as it would in transfiguration or charms.

Mantras tend to help. You are the cauldron. You control the cauldron. The cauldron does not harbor control over you. Be the cauldron.

See if that helps.

You can do it in whatever way works best for you and your learning and organizational styles.

I read once or twice beforehand, but then I spent time preparing all my ingredients beforehand and laying them out in sequence. Sort of like [...] mise en place, since you mention cooking above. Do you cook a lot at home?
