BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD

The snow in the morning is heavy, and as the day wears on, it only gets worse. The walk to the lodge is miserable, and Ebonhide and Azurcrest have the worst of it with long distances and steep hills. Visibility is too poor, and the wind is too strong, to make sledding a safe or appealing prospect. The snow piles thick on the trees and clings to everything, and the lodge's entryway and locker area is caked in mud and snow from students shedding their coats and boots before heading to dinner. Rumors circulate that there's going to be a blizzard tonight, and everyone crosses their fingers for classes being cancelled on Monday. No such luck. By the time dinner rolls around, most students are in a poor mood.

There's one more piece of bad news: The staff have determined that all students must spend the night in the lodge to wait out the storm.

In the middle of the afternoon, a blizzard sets in, stranding all the students in the lodge after dinner. The teachers pull out enough sleeping bags and couches for everyone to get comfy enough to spend the night.

That evening, Philippa Nightingale sees something outside in the snow, looking through the windows at the end of a long hallway. A teacher assures her that it was just a bear, but Pippa is certain the arms and legs were too long…

That night, Cressida Quayle swears she saw someone outside the window—or at least, the shape was humanoid. Theresa Noble hears someone trying to open a locked door into the lodge. Hazel Keating on the third floor hears something walking around on the roof.

» Dinner: The storm begins to rage outside, and after some deliberation, the staff determine it'll be safest for everyone to remain in the lodge overnight. They're expecting a complete whiteout, and it would be unsafe to allow students to move freely about campus. For the sake of this event, assume all characters were at dinner. No exceptions.

» Third Floor: In order to stay entertained, a bunch of students hang around in a sitting area on the third floor. This obscure dead end hall has a few couches and arm chairs, and two window seats. Up here, there's limited adult oversight. There's also a door that opens out onto a balcony. If you want to do anything against the rules, such as drinking (don't get visibly drunk, and remember you're limited to what you had on your person at an average dinner) or smoking (better sneak out onto the very snowy balcony so the teachers don't smell it), this is your place. Remember, you're still within reach of teachers and certain prefects who will report you.

» Third Floor: Truth or Dare: Taking place on the third floor in the little sitting area, a group of ever-changing students play truth or dare out of the sight of teachers.

» Second Floor / Library: Snow and a complete lockdown aren't going to keep dedicated students from hitting the books. The second floor is the quietest tonight, and will be the best place for private conversations.

» First Floor / Atrium: If you're ready to call it a night, or just want to be somewhere quiet to lie down or cuddle, the atrium has been filled with sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is provided with an oversized GOOSEBERRY HIGH shirt in house colors to sleep in.

» Night: You know you're safe, but it doesn't feel safe. Even the bravest students feel unnerved, and sleeping alone doesn't sound very appealing. The best place to be is in the Atrium, surrounded by your peers, with someone you care about right next to you.

After enjoying some fun up in the truth or dare circle, which quickly turned intense as things tended to do around here, Vee makes her way down to the atrium to settle and try to relax a bit. She has about a million things to do, but it's impossible not to enjoy an impromptu sleepover with everyone. She wouldn't be herself otherwise.

Wearing her Ebonhide shirt, she finds a cluster of sleeping bags nobody has claimed yet, and settles down. It's a bit colder than she'd like, making her wish she had a hoodie or extra blanket, but oh well. Maybe she can coerce someone into snuggling with her...

This was fantastic, Ras didn't mind where he slept, he liked just being around everything and spent most of the night eating whatever food he could find or practicing ropes with the small lengths he kept wrapped around his wrist. Not joining in with Truth or Dare, Ras hadn't claimed a place to sleep but once he spotted a familiar red head, he made his way over.

"Cold yet? It's pretty messy out there tonight." Ras smirked as he took a seat claiming the sleeping bag next to Vee. "You survived the last one with a little bit of help, I figure you might need a little extra warmth."

Vee was busy studying her pants, were which were not appropriate pajama attire, when she heard a familiar voice. A smile instantly lit up her face as she looked up, totally forgetting her disappointment at not having comfortable sleeping attire.

"How did you know?" she mused with an answering smile, gesturing to her provided shirt with a pout. "This is not nearly enough for sleeping." She sighed as he sat, immediately inching closer. "The least they could have done was provide hoodies. And more blankets," she said with a shake of her head. "Though it does provide a good opportunity for me to petition cute blondes for cuddles." Her twinkling eyes showed just which blonde she meant.

Ras slipped out of his hoodie and tossed it gently toward Vee, he would easily survive in his stolen Ebonhide colored shirt. This blizzard wasn't too bad to him. Ras could have slept though this storm and been just fine. Hell, he had many times before back home. Even if this storm seemed just a bit off.

"If you freeze, you can have my sleeping bag too. I can share." Ras said with a smile and a bit of a wink. He was fully prepared to keep the redhead warm the rest of the night and figured she was going to need it anyway. Blizzards weren't made for warm weather people. "I guess they had run out of things to give us after the tenth time we have all been stuck in here overnight. They might as well just move us all in here for good."

The blizzard she'd faced while visiting with Ras' family had been bad as far as the temperature went, but at least there she'd been able to pack enough layers to help her through. Of course, she couldn't be too upset about it now. Vee knew if she asked, and really even if she didn't, Ras would snuggle to keep her warm. As proven by the easy way he tossed his hoodie over to her. "How did you manage to bring everything you needed with you?" Pulling the hoodie over her head, she didn't realize some of her head had gone awry in the motion. "Did you know this would happen?" Vee was smiling to show her teasing, though at this point it was more than common for them to tease when together. It was expected.

She didn't say anything about his choice of tshirt, though her eyes twinkled as they took it in pointedly. "Do I have to wait until I'm freezing to cash in on that sleeping bag offer? Or at the very least the cuddling said sharing would bring?" Vee batted her eyelashes at him, her most tempting smile on her lips to sell it even more. Could she really be blamed for wanting to snuggle in a small space with her boyfriend(?) and possibly hopefully steal some kisses while they did? Vee certainly didn't think so. "I guess so. I just would prefer to sleep in something more comfortable pants-wise."

Ras was extra magical, that was the only thing for it. It had been cold outside, Ras had shown up covered in warm things. "I just know things sometimes." Not that it took that much effort to think that maybe one day in the near future there might be some snow and maybe he should at least keep some extra layers on him. It wasn't that he knew the future, he just wanted to be prepared for anything thrown at him. Made sense at least to Ras. "Plus, I like to make sure I have things to do. Considering this place, it seems like every few days something blows up or is flooded or some bear eats someone."

So far there had been no bears eating people but Ras assumed maybe one day that might happen. He had no plan in place for that. Looking over the sleeping bag, he turned the zipper around in his hand. "We might be able to zip two together or I could go bully someone into giving up theirs if they don't want it. I'm sure they wouldn't want you to freeze either." Plus, Vee knew there would be plenty of Ras warmth to go around. Good thing he was a giant. "I can't help you at all pants wise. Wish I could."

"That's a fair point. After being quarantined so often you'd think I'd start walking everywhere with all my books and things. Just in case." Vee could have a tendency to overprepare, but she hadn't reached that level yet. Maybe it was time to start. "I really hope no bears eat anyone tonight, though," she said, suddenly wary of such a thought. Things already felt weird tonight, and such a possibility made her shiver uneasily.

Vee's gaze followed his when he looked at the sleeping bag, smiling at the thought of him stealing one from someone for her. "I was thinking more along the lines of us both being able to fit in one together rather than wrangling others out of theirs," she said with a grin, although it was a tempting image to picture him getting another one for her. "I'm very compact, I'm sure it could work." Ras was pretty tall in comparison, but the sleeping bags were descent size, right? "It's ok. Why is it so acceptable for boys to walk around pantless but not girls?" she humphed, though didn't look seriously mad. Just pouty about not having proper pants.

"Why would you want to walk around with all of your books?" Ras barely took books to any class, were there actually books he needed to bring? He wasn't the best student and he was pretty damn lazy. "It's strange out there tonight but we are rather far away from the front door. If bears break in all we have to do is not be the slowest two. If you fall behind, I'll just piggy back you." Ras looked around for a few moments trying to gather information. "Looks like I might be one of the tallest in here, gives you an advantage to survive." Smirking, Ras tossed his shoes to the ground and wiggled his toes. It was one of the rare times he had actually worn shoes.

"I think we can both fit in one, use the other as a blanket for you." With as many people that were here tonight, how would anyone in charge even notice? He would feel better with her there, something was on his mind and Ras couldn't shake it. It takes a lot to get his mind that distracted and the idea that this was bothering him made him feel even odder. "I'm pretty sure that no one will say anything if you make them disappear once you get under covers. You'll at least be far more comfortable."

Vee couldn't help but give him an indulgent smile, though she did also shake her head a little. "Oh, you are so cute sometimes." She knew Ras didn't study nearly as much as she did, and she wasn't one of those Ebonhides who were surprised to hear other people weren't as crazy as them. "I need my books. I have a lot of work to do. All the time, it seems," she explained with a bit of a wide-eyed look for a moment; as if she were thinking of all the stuff right at that very moment. Her brief panic was broken when he started to talk again, distracting Vee in the best ways like he always did. "I can move pretty fast with these little legs," she insisted, but then seemed to consider. "But I like piggy back rides more than running, so. It's a solid plan."

Nodding as if that decided things, despite it not being a serious scenario, her attention was drawn down to his feet as he tossed his shoes off. "Wow. You have shoes on?" she remarked, amazement in her eyes. That was a first. Must have been the snow. "I think it's a very solid plan. Especially if we're going to have to escape bears. Might as well already be close," she said. The prefects and professors would be much busier with other things. Like probably policing Azurecrest closely. Ras' suggestion made her eyebrow raise, a smirk on her lips. "I will be, it's true." It was an option she certainly thought had merit. "I knew I should've kept my uniform on for dinner. A skirt would've been better than jeans." If Ras didn't mind her taking them off once they were safely zipped away, then she would swallow any shyness and just do it.

"Work isn't always the most important thing in the world. Sometimes you need to take a step back and relax, school isn't just for learning." Ras studied sometimes. He didn't take classes too seriously, he barely took classes as it was but he still passed and still did fairly all right when it came down to it. School was just school to Ras, nothing here was going to make or break you once you got out into the real world. No one was going to ask them in five years what grade they got in Charms. Collect knowledge as you could, don't stress, just graduate. It didn't help that Ras had no plans for an actual job after school, he was just going to go sail and make boats. Didn't need good grades for that. "I'll make sure you don't fall off in a rush to the exit away from a bear."

"Hey, there are times that you need shoes." Lies. "My mom wrote me and told me not to lose any toes." Ras nodded toward the fairly new looking boots on the ground next to him. "Something about needing all the toes or some other stuff. She worries too much." Honestly, the boy needed to wear shoes all the time anyway but he was just far too busy doing other things. Like sleeping. Or eating. "I'm not going to have time to put them back on in case of running bear." He smirked over at Vee. "Don't tell mom." Ras was not going to police her clothing, he wasn't in charge and frankly he wasn't about to tell her to keep clothes on. "Just be comfortable. If anything we can steal another shirt and fashion some sort of skirt, shorts, toga situation." Seemed practical, maybe.

Vee looked properly (and entirely pretend) defensive at his words. "I relax!" She did. More so now than ever before, actually. "Did you see me studying over break?" Here she gives him a playful poke, which is easy since they're already comfortably close on top of the sleeping bags. "I think it's actually relaxing and not worrying about it so much that helped me finally nail the animagus transformation, so your point has extra merit." Of course, Ty had helped too. She was convinced the cheesy friendship lines they'd spouted had a tiny bit of truth to them. Vee also knew that she didn't have the luxury of not working hard or figuring out what she wanted to do. Her parents were very much into working for what you wanted, and they wouldn't let her be a bum. Sadly. Sailing with Ras was much more fun than work. "I am a pretty good clinger. It's years of cheer stunts, I'm convinced." She laughed, knowing he'd understand at least in part. He might not have been a flier like her, but it was well known that when an unexpected slip or fall occurred you just clung tighter and prayed.

A raised eyebrow was her first reaction to his insistence about shoes. "Who are you and what have you done with Ras?" she demanded, though his words about his mother brought everything into more sense territory. "You do need shoes. For keeping the toes in tact, keeping the feet devoid of rocks and other sharp objects. And so on" she mused with a nudge. "I won't tell her. Mostly because she'll be disappointed in me for not taking better care of you," she assured him with a smile. There really wouldn't be much time to prepare if an attack did happen, shoes or not, though. "I like being comfortable," she agreed, figuring the tshirt was long enough and if he didn't mind. Well. Neither did she. "I just might not have time to put them back on either if a bear attacks. So. Oh well." She was grinning at the idea, even if it would be really cold out there in that case.
