When Gaming Isn't Fun Anymore [Feb. 9th, 2008|01:03 am]

[Mood | sleepy]

In a short span of five months, I am burned out on WoW. I can't take any more of the overinflated epen0r or ebewbies, the constant 'ur mom' insults, the God awful grammar and spelling skills, the guild drama, the personal attacks, the whining, begging, scamming, spamming...need I go on?

A friend of mine called WoW 'The AOL of MMORPGs'. He was right. I mean, has anyone read most of the posts on the WoW boards? My God, for a game spouting it is the largest MMORPG in the world, the majority of the community sucks ass.

All I wanted to do was play a game and have some fun, relieve stress, enjoy something. But no, it has become a chore and has lost the shimmer it used to have. I think after Valentine's Day, I am going to suspend my account and call it a day. My logic is this - if a game isn't fun anymore, there is no point playing it. I have quit RPGs in the past for the same reason, and I haven't went back to them since.

I'm sure there are other rpg's out there, but to be honest, I'm kinda burned out on the very idea of even playing a game at all. Anyone else had this problem?

In hindsight, it was fun while it lasted.

Nasa's making an MMO [Jan. 27th, 2008|12:11 am]

Nasa's hoping that by creating it they can help increase public awareness of NASA and communicate on some of the things Nasa does.

Here are some of the links about it.
http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/01/nasa-seeks-inpu.html
http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/01/would-you-play.html
http://procurement.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/eps/synopsis.cgi?acqid=128415http://ipp.gsfc.nasa.gov/mmo/submit.html

I dunno, I'm really interested in seeing what comes about MMO's are about 50, 50 in catching my interest... But I'm not sure how they can make a good game, while remaining educational with their goals... Since although I'm highly interested in space, I'm more storyline / action / puzzle focused when it comes to games.

Hee, I totally understand it's not a game for everyone, but the past week I've totally been getting into this game. It's down now, OMG. D:

I'm lucky in that although I only started playing last week, I had an account from way back in 2003, which meant I was eligible for new year gold! XD

Does anyone else play? What are some good ways to earn gold besides spamming? So far jigsaws, market and first post/journal entry of the day have been my favourite way to earn gold.

Advertisment: Gaming - What Are You Currently Playing? [Jan. 23rd, 2008|05:32 pm]

[info]gaming
You're playing this awesome game and want to share it with people but your friendslist isn't terribly interested and you don't want to spam the regular gaming communities with your progress reports? Then [info]gaming is the place for you! We'll listen to your ramblings and be happy to contribute our own: Let us know where in your games you currently are, what you like or dislike, if there's a boss you just can't beat (who knows, someone might even know a tactic you didn't see in that FAQ you were reading) or if there's one you've finally, finally beaten or what you think about your current games' designs or battle systems. If it's about what you're currently playing, it almost certainly belongs here.

< /advertisment >

If you have any comments/costructive criticism, I'd be happy to here them! I'm kind of caught off guard by the fact that the comm already has three (make that four by the time I finished writing this post) members after existing for just an hour and before I even did any advertising. But that's great! I hope to make this an interesting and exciting addition to comms like this one. ^^;

I'm curious. I know about the older PS2 models that eventually stopped playing blue-back games or vice versa, but not this. Has anyone else had the problem of the system playing all disks, but not movies? Regular DVDs. It always worked in the past, but just recently stopped.

I'm just wondering. If only because I don't want to use the DVD player in the living room--there's an HD TV and I absolutely despise them.

Legend of Dragoon + PS2 = Wuh oh [Jan. 20th, 2008|10:07 pm]

[Music |Namie Amuro - So Crazy]

This last week I've decided to replay an old favorite of mine, Legend of Dragoon. Everything was going smoothly up until I was standing around on the world map in front of Lohan. I was so glad because it's a commerce town, which in gamer speak, means shinies for me. Yay, shinies! Sign me up, cap'n, let's go! And I waited and waited and waited for the town to load...

About three minutes later I realized the black screen of doom was never going to go away -- furthermore, I hadn't saved beforehand either. Now, I know that logically this can only be because I'm playing it on my PS2 instead of my PSX, but I just couldn't be bothered to unpack the thing for one game. So I suck it up and keep right on goin'. Everything goes fine for a long time until I get to the Gigantos lair area.

I try to enter the Gigantos village and again, the game promptly freezes and again, I hadn't saved beforehand. My eye twitches a little, but y'know joke's on me for not thinking to save, right? I got in a random battle ten minutes later and the thing freezes immediately afterwards. dgjfhd I cannot believe my own patience sometimes.

It froze about five times in the village of the Gigantos altogether -- twice directly after a boss battle and a lengthy cutscene. Can you believe that? The best part of it all though was my mom noting how annoyed I was and asking me, "Why don't you just play it on your PSX?"

I replied, "Because then the PS2 wins, mom."

WE have really bad luck with PS2s.
We've had 6, and they've all broken after like 5-6 months.
So, yeah, we haven't had one in...around a year now. And we're getting one today. I can finally finish Kingdom Hearts 2!! We only had a PS2 long enough for me to get about 8 hours into the game. So, I'm spending the net few days restarting and completing both 1 and 2.
This makes me happy.

The name is D and I have a kind of issue in WoW that's sort of odd but I can't seem to find a way to feel better about it. I like to play male characters on WoW, I just enjoy playing males more than females no big deal, yeah? Well it's apparantly a big deal to guys. I'll make friends with guys in game, but it's all play no personal stuff. Then after a while they really like my characters and want to know more about me or they want to get on vent. Then they find out I'm female and usually either two things happen, they kind of freak then leave me alone for a few days then come back to me and things go on as normal. That or I get yelled at for playing a male toon. I find a lot of guys think that if I'm female I should play a female toon. So I've gotten to where when I usually meet new friends I just end up not talking about myself and never going on vent so my friends I make end game dont ditch me for being a girl. I know it all sounds crazy but it keeps happening to me.

I dont know how to fix this without letting the friends I make in game know up front that I'm a girl, but I dont think that's a good way to make conversation. I'm just not sure what to do...maybe somebody can offer some insight?

On a gaming note, I have been playing my paladin for a while and I love it. There is just something I haven't been sure on about paladins/my spec. I'm a retribution paladin does spell damage matter for them and I should start working on it or is spell damage something that really wont effect my spec?

I really should use my off time during my vacation to complete my Pokémon Pearl file, but I'm having serious block issues with it. I just don't enjoy this game as much as I have the previous ones (my favorite of all time being Emerald). The plot was achingly long and the gym leaders, quite frankly, are just a tad on the hax side (Maylene's Lucario was ridiculous). Right now I need to finish up the last gym and beat the Elite Four (whom I also call E4), but I'm totally uninspired to do so. Instead, I've got this Zubat that I've been IV training; however, if I want to level it, the best way is to get those braces that you get, guess what, after you beat the E4!

So not fair.

When it comes to WoW, I have become, well, rather disenchanted with my level 61 priestess. I just can't seem to get her leveled higher, so I have put the breaks on her for a while. I rolled a hunter, and I am absolutely loving it. I leveled her from 1 to 15 in one day. I am kinda getting burnt out with WoW, so I am taking a bit of a sabbatical.

Have you ever loved a game so much, you burnt yourself out on it?

The Quest for a DS [Dec. 27th, 2007|08:23 pm]

[Mood | disappointed]

As I said in a comment on the "What did you get for Christmas?" post below, I finally won the argument with my fiance, James, regarding buying a DS for myself :P He bought a new golf bag with some of our Christmas money, you see, so I thought it was only fair I got something expensive, too XD

I went to five. different. stores. today. And they were all out of stock. I couldn't believe it. I mean, fair enough, I understand that lots of people would have gotten a DS for Christmas, but... if you knew you were going to sell a lot of something, wouldn't you order extra? Like, lots extra? Especially considering that the days of cash and gift cards are becoming greater, and you likely make just as much money in the days following Christmas as you do leading up to them?

I was just so disappointed :( So I may have to wait a few more weeks now, until someone gets more stock in. I got so excited that finally, after months of pining for one, I was going to get one! Just to find out that, no, I have to wait a little longer.

Blah, I tell you - BLAH! XD;

What gaming-related stuff did y'all get as gifts for the holidays?

My big present from my partner Al was a Nintendo DS with Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings! I spent so many hours playing that! I had gotten Al a Tom Clancy PS2 game and Kingdom Hearts II, which also got a lot of play yesterday. ^_^ The $50 Wal*Mart certificate I got from my brother-in-law's girlfriend is going towards a couple more DS games as well.

I dinged my little troll priestess to 60 a half-hour ago. Instead of having 176k to ding to the next level, it jumped to 494k. Oh brother, I have a feeling it's going to be a while before I ding to 61. Eep. XD

It was fun to speed along from my 40s to 60. Sadly, I'm back to the drawing board after dinging to 60. It's hard to solo as a priest in Hellfire; I'm constantly aggroing everything under the sun.

Ten more levels to go...

[Mood | irritated]

So, I got my little troll priestess up to 58, and the first stop was the Outlands. However, I noticed I am way undergeared. I'm trying to get myself geared up, because I will be returning to the Battlegrounds when I ding 59, which should happen in about 5 more bubbles. Usually, my tank, a level 65 fully protted pally, accompanies me, but lately, he's been an ass. When he asks me to bubble and keep him healed with one of his quests, I do it, but I can't seem to get him to return the favor, which is annoying the Hell outta me.

I was in Org earlier, putting some stuff on the AH for sale, and this one broad kept saying 'im the cutest person on the game' or 'im the hottest one here'. I said, 'You're about as cute as a train wreck!' and 'The only way you'd be hot is if you were on fire - literally.' If there's one thing I HATE in the world, it's attention whores and guild princesses. (Ask my sister, [info]idrinkcoffee about how much I hate attention whores.) I don't tolerate either of them. I decided to fire back at her constant spamming of General chat and threw 40 snowballs at her in sequence. She whispered, 'Stop it.' I said, 'What will you do if I don't? You're just level 8. One hit of my bitch stick, and you'll die. Stop spamming how cute you are because for some reason, I bet you're a fat and smelly man.'

It is broads like her that make the rest of us gamers look bad.

OMG U R A GURL AND U PLAY GAME? [Dec. 18th, 2007|12:03 am]
idrinkcoffee
Two recent "episodes" of the OMG U R A GURL AND U PLAY GAME?

1. I am in charge of two adult ESL classes at work, and I've talked about video games in one of them. One of the students (a guy who's older than I am) totally freaked out when I recognised his all-time favourite: Mario Kart.

"But... But... How do you know that game? You're... a girl!"
"So what? I'm old enough to know SNES games."

2. One of the boys at the Phonics class had the balls to ask me if I could play StarCraft.

"I'm not good at it at all, but yeah, I can play StarCraft. Which race do you usually play? Terran? Protoss? Zerg?"
(Followed by answers from the boys. They said Terran and Protoss - none of them said Zerg.)
"Heh, interesting. Most of you go for Protoss, eh? I prefer Protoss myself."
(The boys rolled their eyes and I grinned at them like a Cheshire cat.)

Isn't it ridiculous that lots of boys think girls don't/can't play games? Share your stories and remind us why we, as "girl gamers", must laugh at 'em. ;)

I don't know if you guys know about the Carnival of Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy? Its basically a blog role, that changes with who's organising it and attempts to have a different theme related to a feminist issue. The 17th one was on Women and gaming here http://troubleinchina.livejournal.com/245432.html

And I thought you might be interested in the report on FPS, that I wrote as the aftermath of a study on FPS and immersion, on women in FPS, as PC and NPCs and the generic environement that I wrote for the carnival.
