You know Fred, I like the way you think.

A friend of mine is from Iowa. She asked her father what he thought of the marriage ruling.

The response from this 85 year old farming republican?

"It's about damn time."

I'm not big on generalizing people, but I love the Iowans I've met. The ones I know just seem to have a "as long as you don't bug me, I won't bug you" attitude. More people should listen to Fred. Let's hope they do.

I think this is the most embarrassed I've been at being from Texas since George Bush left office.

[info]4cupcakes posted this on facebook. I thought more people should see it. I hope she doesn't mind I'm sharing it here. I'd like to think that if every voter in California were made to watch this 4 minute video and then vote on Prop 8 again, it wouldn't pass. After you've watched the video make sure to sign the letter to the Supreme Court telling them to invalidate Prop 8.

Can we post stuff about non-US politics here too?

Citizen Crain: In France, more straights opting for civil unions over marriage.

"The most important point I would like to make is that it is terribly humorous and ironic that the French created civil unions to protect the institution of marriage... and now civil unions are undermining marriage because people are opting for them instead of marriage. Talk about the law of unintended consequences."

See, if they had just given everyone the right to marry in the first place, this would not have happened.

at 6:00 p.m. Eastern tonight, Johana Sigurdardottir, the first lesbian prime minister, will be sworn in in Iceland.

She is Iceland's first female head of state and the world's first out gay leader. Johana's ministry site lists author and playwright Jonina Leosdottir as her spouse.

This is an interim PM position, but, hopefully, she will be reelected in the spring when Iceland's scheduled elections occur. She's got a helluva lot of work in front of her in the next few months, that's for sure.

If you know anyone who had trouble at the Inaugural...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just received the following from the Inaugural Committee:

Senator Feinstein Statement on Incidents at 56th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony

Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, today issued the following statement in response to reports of incidents which prevented a large number of ticketholders from reaching their designated areas at the 56th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony:

Following is Senator Feinstein’s statement:
“I have just spoken with Mark Sullivan, Director of the Secret Service, and I have asked him to convene along with the U.S. Capitol Police, all law enforcement and other parties involved in planning for this Inaugural to conduct a prompt investigation into two serious incidents that have been reported. These reports have prompted great concern by members of the Inaugural Committee, including Senator Bob Bennett, and by Congress in general.

The specific incidents include the report that a decision was made to cut off access to Purple and Blue standing areas, which meant that a large number of ticketholders could not reach their designated areas.

I am also aware of the incident involving the 3rd Street Tunnel, where thousands of people were stuck for several hours and apparently without any law enforcement presence.

There may have also been other irregularities, but I have heard enough to know that something went wrong and we need to find out what happened. Mr. Sullivan has indicated that he will provide a full report.

I would encourage people who have direct information about these incidents to contact the Secret Service, in addition to contacting the Joint Congressional Committee for Inaugural Ceremonies at”

This is happy news! Just the fact that the case is being reviewed is happy news. According to the article, Calif supreme court is stepping in and allowing three of the lawsuits. Here's hoping that they overturn the unfair (for lack of mature'er word) law.

Join the Impact/Seven Weeks to Equality

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Join the Impact this Saturday all across the U.S.

We call on all supporters of equality to sustain and intensify the nationwide campaign of mass protests and non-violent civil disobedience, for seven weeks, starting on November 27, 2008, the thirtieth anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk, and to then gather together in mass, from all corners of our country, in Washington, DC on the morning of Tuesday, January 20, 2009, to honor the inauguration of our President, Barack Obama.
Check out the details and the petition at Seven Weeks to Equality.

So I was over at Daily Kos, when I came across this diary. Someone posted a vid of Real Time With Bill Maher from 2005.

Okay, tell me again how my favorite pothead saw this coming, and our government didn't?

This is from the New Rules segment of the show. The pertinent part is just before the 2-minute mark. Oh, and check out how not-gray Bill was 3 years ago.

2005. Damn. Thank God this nightmare of an administration is 60+ days away from being evicted!!

PS, just for one wants to pay for Bush's memoirs. But they'll pay for Laura Bush's. Hee!
