Cid felt his conscience prick him every time he signed an order. One of the children could be hurt, or even killed, if he did not pick them correctly, or if the situation got out of hand. But they wouldn't grow if he sheltered them, so he choked back his sighs and signed his name. Then he went out and strangled his guilt so he could give them inspirational speeches. Then he carefully held his hands steady and gave crushing handshakes either for support or congratulations over a job well done.
Then he went back to his office and cried.
