( Betony Nature Prophet )

Betony and I walked around the campus, which is crowded in the early summer because it is so warm and nice and even the freshwomen are allowed their freedom from the sign-in support centers. Finally, we arrived at our tree. No one likes it since it is old and buggy, overrun by big and small ants. I sat down on the ground and Betony followed suit. I pulled out my rough draft of my latest QuAC book review, watching Betony out of the corner of my eye sketching. It was a different sort of sketching. Not of people or trees, but of the play of the light and shadow over the clearing in front of us. Betony knows I am fascinated by those drawings.

I smiled, “Art project?” She shook her head, “No. This is just for fun. Is that another book review?” I nodded and she returned to her sketch as I focused on my work, checking my watch every few minutes. It had taken a good ten minutes to get up the hill. Not that it bothered me that Betty was slow. She takes her time since she knows I don’t like to have to walk her back down the hill to the nurse when she has an asthma attack in this kind of weather. It’s been too hot and the pollen lingers in the air. It’s disgusting, but it’s terrible to stay in the upper campus support centers because everyone goes to the two air-conditioned ones and then it’s not cool enough. When I finished, I tucked my review back into my bag and leaned back against the tree, not really caring about the ants and inchworms that bothered so many of the other girls.

Betony put down her sketchbook and moved closer to me, resting her head on my shoulder. I put my arm around her shoulder, just a little amused about her initiative. It is rare that she gets intimate with me at school. Until the hallways empty of girls at our school, she restricts me to just holding hands and the occasional friendly greeting or cheer-up hug.

Rei and I walked around the school campus, occasionally wincing over a few kids saying "That's so gay" about classes and people and also the typical "all-girls' school" view of "Oh, she's such a dyke" for a girl who was flirty and wore her skirts hiked up so you could see her shorts or her panties. I don't think they realize tht Rei and I are members of the GLBT community. We're normal humans. I'm a member of SADD and the school newspaper. Rei is a member of ADA, Gospel Choir and Campus Ministry Service Club. You would think we were your average high school students. We just hold hands a lot and we dance together at the school dances. You see us together a lot. Everyone seems to think we're perverts because we are so close. I admit a fondness for shonen-ai and shojo-ai animes, but that isn't even explicit stuff, so I really don't get it. Just kissing, holding hands, hugs, cuddles, and dancing. It's the same method Rei and I use to show our affection for each other. We aren't flamboyant gays. We're very modest and sincere about our relationship.

And that's what I like best.

Betony and I went to a Pride event. I worry a little about Betony. This is her first Pride. And especially because she is bisexual and bisexual people get a lot of shit from both straight and gay communities. I just want my girlfriend to be happy. I love her dearly.

Betony was talking to some people and suddenly she ran off. I followed her and saw her run into the restrooms at City Hall. I found her sobbing in one of the cubicles. I stood before the closed door, making certain she could recognize my shoes, “Betony, are you okay?” I heard her sob, “I’ll be fine. Go enjoy yourself.” I stood there for a long while, knowing there was probably a gaggle of girls watching me, thinking ‘This is a really bad break up scene.’ “No, I’m not going to be able to enjoy myself if you’re going to stay in here crying, Betony. I love you. I want you to be proud of who you are. I want you happy most of all. Come out and I’ll give you a hug. I think you need one.”

Slowly the door creaked open and I knew everyone could see the tears streaking my love's cheeks. She collapsed into my arms and I held her close. Then she looked up, “Why do they hate me? Bisexuality is not a crime. I am not transitional or insecure. This is not a phase. I accept them for who they love, why won’t they accept me?” I held her closer to me, unconsciously rocking back and forth, still knowing we had an audience. I didn’t want to bring my girl’s attention to that though. Knowing that she was very self-conscious and still not quite accustomed to being “out of the closet.”

Me: Well, this is certainly a turning point…I’m doing an original work! *laughs* An accomplishment, I must say! *looking at the page amount* I guess I can’t help writing too much! Next year, however, I shall have a real epic in 3 sections w/ a cute partner who may carry on my evil habits after I’ve graduated. Some people will get my joke about the title. In addition, I have to thank some people. Especially my Moonlight and Magick group friends, who have been kind enough to allow me to make my bonfire scene based off their Ostara bonfire format. *hugs sylvermagic, a.k.a. ladydruantia, the group leader*
Before I begin, I’ll identify the characters as it’s a little unclear as many of them have several names they go by: one everyday name, one magickal name and a nickname.
Cleopatra: aka Rabiah and Cleo, she is one of Diana’s friends and she worships the Egyptian gods and goddesses in her heritage as an Egyptian Wicca.
Diana: aka Myst, she is a Druid and she is rather sensitive about what she believes in.
Vivienne: aka Viv and Lucia, she is an eclectic pagan and she combines a few different beliefs
Kali: a Catholic girl who is friends with Cleopatra, Diana and Vivienne
Catrina: one of Diana’s cousins, who is married and taught Diana about Druidry, she is Diana’s teacher and friend.
Gwen: Gwen is a very open student in Diana’s English and Gym class. Her mother’s a nurse and her father’s a vet and she knows a lot of remedies from her mother.
Ms. Clark: Diana, Cleo, Kali and Gwen’s English teacher
Sterling: Catrina’s husband, he is also a Druid and teaches Diana, he plays a flute made of elder wood, one of many sacred trees
