Summary: The Party

Theo stared in the mirror, suit, check, fedora, check, smile, check. Truthfully he'd never been one for birthday parties, his own had always been quite affairs. Perhaps a few days later his father would take him out on a trip, that was his reward. But tonight was different, it wasn't about Theodore it was about the guests. Thanks to Robards he'd have Rita Skeeter pegging him as a lier, he should have guessed Robards would chicken out. But Skeeter wasn't to be the only drama of the evening, he hoped his old classmates might bring some of their prejudices along. It would make things interesting.

Fixing his cuffs he straightened his shoulders and grimaced, time to get this show on the road. The guests waited the doors closed to the ballroom and the upstairs blocked by a cord. He stepped out at the top of the stairs, waiting until the chatter quieted and eyes turned his way.

"Welcome, classmates, friends, business partners and reporters, tonight I hope you will enjoy yourselves to the fullest. To your front is the ballroom, which I do believe you all know how to use. Behind me are gambling rooms and other areas to lounge and spend your time. All donations there will proceed to the lovely Renya Everett's foundation. Any questions will be addressed by one of the staff working here tonight," he paused, "Have a good time."

With that the doors swung open, the cord fell and confetti rained from the roof. Music poured out of the ballroom, hardly distracting from the vibrant decor. Movies flickered on the wall in black and white, waiters carrying drinks of all types were dressed in costume to match the themes. It would at least, Theodore hoped, be a party to remember.

To say Hannah felt utterly ridiculous was an understatement. She hadn't been able to conveniently forget her costume (no thanks to Susan), and as a result she was still rather miffed with her friend.

While she thought Susan may as well have been born to wear the regency costume, with her small frame and delicate features, Hannah felt like an elephant draped in white chiffon.

Her breasts strained against the fabric as she breathed. Although she'd been assured that her costume was cut for larger-breasted women, the distinction seemed to be a matter of whether she had to worry about slipping a nipple or not.

Storming away from her friend, Hannah made a beeline for the entrance of the ballroom. If she was going to survive the evening, she needed alcohol, and plenty of it.

As she snatched the first drink that passed her, Hannah wondered if she could beat up one of the waiters and take their costume. It might just be worth serving a bunch of snobs if it meant she didn't look like an iced amazon.

Susan had turned to look about the room, and the instant she turned back to Hannah to make an observation, she was gone. She looked around and soon found the back of Hannah's head drifting into the crowd. She sighed and only just stopped herself from rolling her eyes. How much longer could she be upset about the dress? Really, Susan rather liked her own dress, and she had even gone so far as to fix her hair into something rather fancy. It was only going to be one night, and she was sure that there were dozens of other people that looked even more ridiculous than Hannah felt.

She gave Hannah a few moments to herself, then, with a little sigh, made her way through the crowd that was building to find her friend. Approaching her from behind, she took her spot next to her and spoke kindly, patiently.

"You can't stay angry all night long, you know. You look perfectly fine."

"You look fine" Hannah replied grumpily "I look like a giantess" She glanced over at Susan, and then at a waiter dressed in a rather fetching suit and fedora.

"I'm only going to ruin your night. You work hard, you deserve to enjoy yourself. I'm just some unemployed bum without the tact or the talent to get a real job."

Hannah threw down the rest of her drink, wiping her mouth on her forearm. She wished she hadn't come, even for Susan's sake. All it had done was make her realize how out of place she really was.

The parody of muggle cinema that paraded in front of her left Hannah feeling vaguely ill. The dress was really the final straw. It was all toxic to her, and she longed for the stillness of her mother's farm.

Pulling Sue along by the arm, Hannah went out onto a balcony, glancing around to make sure no one else was out there. Throwing her friend's arm down harshly, Hannah turned to her. "How can they swan about like there's nothing going on?" She bellowed, waving her arm in the vague direction of the door.

"Ha-" she began to say, but was soon being pulled away to the balcony. Her arm was thrown down, and she had to massage the skin Hannah had gripped, trying to get the slight pain to go away. She really should have been smarter about this and decided not to go, it wasn't as if she had a duty or purpose to be there. She knew she didn't belong here, or with these people. At least Hannah hadn't stormed off and left her alone again.

"I know," she agreed, looking towards the door. "I'm sorry for making you come, but I thought this might be nice, since everyone from Hogwarts was invited." She shrugged helplessly.

"It's not your fault. I thought it might have been okay, even with this bloody dress, if I just sat down and drank myself into a stupor." Hannah smacked her palm down on the balcony.

"I just feel like such a hypocrite. I'm meant to be fighting these people, not fraternizing with them for my own personal benefit." She lowered her voice, moving closer to Sue "There are people out there who can't show their faces because they didn't comply with some ridiculous law."

Hannah glanced guiltily at Susan's arm. Her voice softened slightly. "I didn't hurt you, did I?" She took Sue's hand tenderly, stroking her fingers lightly over her wrist.

The mention of people not being able to show their faces made Susan turn a slight shade of pink, and she seemed to jump when Hannah reached for her hand. She composed herself and shrugged it off, trying to smile.

"You know how I am," she began. "The slightest bit of pain makes me act as if I've broken my arm." She cleared her throat and looked down at her wrist, thinking quietly. "We just have to stay a little while longer, then we can go home- have a go at Scrabble?"

Hannah shook her head sadly. She admired Susan's capacity for optimism, but she couldn't stay in that quiet existence a moment longer. "I'm sorry Sue, I'm not a good girl like you." She replied, wrapping her arms around her friend and giving her a long kiss on the cheek. "I just wish I could make you as happy as you've made me" Hannah added, brushing away the tears that had begun to flow.

Pulling her wand out of her purse, Hannah muttered a spell under her breath. A tear appeared in the fabric. Hannah put her wand away and grasped the material, tearing it up to a daring high split which revealed her Eminor Macula scar for all to see.

"Goodbye, Sue" Hannah said, cupping her friend's face and kissing her briefly on the lips, just long enough to indicate that she felt more then friendship.

Turning, she strode through the door, her head held high with a proud expression on her face. She pulled her hair loose as she strode through the crowded room, knocking a waiter to the ground to draw attention to herself.

"Yes, that's right, stare at me. You're right to be concerned that there's a filthy halfblood in your midst." She continued to move through the crowd. "I wouldn't worry, I won't trouble you for long, I just wanted to take time out from the festivities to remind you that some of us are being branded like animals. Have a pleasant evening." She smiled curtly at the crowd, and bustled out of the doors.

Everything was happening all at once, and Susan wasn't sure what to do. She was just about to ask Hannah what she thought she was doing when she said goodbye, instantly bring tears to her eyes. There was hardly a moment to dwell on it, though, because Hannah was kissing her. She was aware of what was going on, but she felt as if she weren't really there, that she was watching something that couldn't be stopped. She was helpless, a feeling she resented and felt often.

Susan didn't need to follow her friend to know what was going to happen next. She saw her walk away and move into the ballroom once more, but she made no move to stop her. There was no way she could stop Hannah. She knew that she would do what she wanted. Susan leaned against the railing, closing her eyes and just trying to slow down the thoughts racing through her mind, to try and piece together everything that was going on, though it was no use. She cried instead.

Padma was on time, with Oliver in tow. He'd begged, pleaded and finally convinced her that it would be a perfect spying opportunity. 'There'll be plenty of people I could get information from - and Turpin says her dearly beloved is comin', it'd be a good chance for us tae see how he gets on in public.' It had been the mention of old & mouldy that had convinced her, and so they'd arrived, James with his Malfoy worthy blonde locks and a suit fit to sweep Jane Austen off her feet ('You're last name begins with a 'c' now, in case you haven't forgotten, Mr. Crotchup?') and Padma in the wonderful gown from Theodore.

Speaking of, Padma glanced about for her friend, intent on thanking him once more for the gown and hoping to congratulate him for what was looking to be an excellent affair.

Oliver adjusted the stupid frill at his neck. Padma had been right, of course. He couldn't very well come dressed as someone from the American West because he wasn't Oliver Wood, he was James Crotchup and Crotchup did begin with a 'c' ('Damn, George and Fred and their idea of humor.') He already felt anxious enough as it was looking like James. He was worried about questions, suspicion and being discovered, however, he hadn't been lying to Padma when he's said the party would be a good opportunity to spy, not only on Aloysius, but on all the Ministry officials Padma has promised would be there.

He was pretty sure Padma was onto him regarding Lisa. The girl certainly wasn't oblivious. Still, Oliver had vowed not to compromise the situation with Lisa by trying anything in public. It was one thing to flirt with Lisa an hushed French at her home, but there were too many people here for him to be anything more than her French tutor. However, he did hope to seek her out. She wasn't the kind of person to be impolite and she'd surely introduce him to anyone in her group - which was excellent for Oliver. Still, he didn't like the reprimand Padma had given him before they'd left her flat. It was one thing to still be on amiable terms with one's ex, but she had no right to scold him for something he hadn't even done yet.

He watched as Padma glanced about the room, probably looking for the infamous Mr. Nott. Oliver hadn't met the man, but he wasn't impressed. Padma was acting as if he'd hung the moon, and while it wasn't an unattractive dress, it certainly wasn't so fabulous as to merit the gushing praise Padma had been throwing Nott's way. She rolled his eyes at her when she wasn't looking and turned to glance about the room himself. He wondered if George would be there. He really would like to talk to him about their plans, but it probably wasn't the best place for them to speak, no matter how hushed their tones.

Not seeing Theo immediately, Padma turned back to 'James' and restrained the urge to elbow him as he fiddled. Were spies normally so visibly agitated? Padma rolled her eyes when James looked away and would have been vexed with anyone who commented on their similarities.

"I'm going to find Theodore," she said to 'James'. "Stay out of trouble, I'll be back soon."

Theo headed down the stairs greeting guests with cool smiles and sympathetic nods if they offered a complaint. His eyes scanned the crowd for a friendly face, funny wasn't it? His own birthday party and no friends in sight. Finally he caught sight of Padma's distinctive looks. He moved through the crowd and gently grasped her elbow.

"Padma, how are you?" he asked with a smile.

It was then that a ruckus kicked up in the ballroom. He could just hear someone exclaiming about being branded, then a blond stormed from the room. Who was that now? Hailey..Hannah? Hannah Abbot that was it. Well, he'd have to send her some flowers, she'd provided a bit of tension to the evening, Theo grinned at Padma. "There's my drama," he said happily, at least Ms. Skeeter would have something to write about. So far he'd avoided her and probably her anger at the Minister not being in attendance.

Padma grinned at the sight of Theo. She gave him a friendly hug before pulling back with an even brighter smile.

"I'm wonderful, but I think that mostly has to do with my beautiful dress." She was about to ask how he was, how he thought his party was going and if the Minister was going to attend as rumor had it, when Hannah Abbott went bursting through the crowd, knocking a waiter over as she did.

"Shit," she mumured, then quickly clapped a hand over her mouth. Damn Oliver and his rubbing off on her. She frowned, worried that there might be an undercover Auror in the crowd. She was more worried about Oliver than Hannah, as guilty as that made her feel. She quickly glanced about for Oliver and spied him standing in between Lisa and Hannah. She watched him lead Lisa outside and frowned before turning back to Theo. At least he seemed happy.

"You're enjoying it!" she tried to frown at him, but broke into a soft smile. "It is terrible though, what they're doing to them." She suppressed her smile and moved closer to Theo, keeping her voice low. "I thought the branding's were a rumor at first, but I suppose not. Do you think it's real?" Padma whispered, nodding towards the retreating Hannah. "Or do you suppose it's a clever glamour meant to cause trouble?"

"I can't help it, all these people who would've never given me another thought, suddenly this party will be all that's on their lips, it'll get people thinking, questioning, talking," he said with a grin. Theodore paused thinking at her question, normally he would've passed off some lie but Padma deserved his true opinions. "I'm not really sure, but I wouldn't be suprised, frankly I'll be lucky if I make it through the night without getting arrested," he paused glancing around them, but people seemed distracted enough, "The ministry put me through hell and back over my father's funeral and frankly I had to jump through quite a few hoops to get all the muggle stuff in here. I wouldn't be surprised if they rescinded my permits and hauled me off."

"Whether it's meant to cause trouble doesn't matter, it's the thought, what is our government doing to us?" he said with a frown, "What should they be allowed to do to us for our own safety?" Theodore shrugged and glanced away, furious once more at the thought of his father's bruises, the spells, the carefully cleaned flat. He turned back to Padma offering an arm, "Now, you're going to ruin the fun. Tonight's about teasing the Ministry, a thorn in the lion's paw. It should be fun, if all goes as planned."

"I doubt an Auror would arrest you after letting Hannah walk free. I dope they haven't ambushed her at the door," she added in afterthought. "I wouldn't be surprised if they threatened you, however. I understand Mr. Pewter has been sent as a liaison to send the Minister's regrets?" Padma took his proffered arm and smiled, despite her worries.

"Well, in that case, I should hope you're going to ask me to dance. This dress deserves at least one turn on the floor."

"In fact, the Minister has already tendered his regrets," he said with a roll of his eyes, "Much to my irritation, though he did send some rather good wine over. Mr. Pewter is here as a personal invite of course, I await his comments on the event with baited breath." A downward slant of his mouth indicated displeasure with the entire idea.

But he moved into a smile quickly enough, happy she liked the dress. "My grandmother always said it was the woman who made the dress," he said with a smile, leading her towards the dance floor, "My grandmother also believed that every woman deserved two turns on the dance floor at least, one a friend, one a new acquaintance." A new song was just starting up and Theo inclined his head in a mock bow, eyebrows raised, smile tickling at his lips, "So, in following with her advice would you dance with me Miss Patil?"

"He gave you wine?" Padma frowned, but didn't press the issue. However, her silence on the matter didn't stop the icy fingers from tracing over her neck. She took Theo's arm and gave him a smile, but her mind was on the Minister and his gift. Hadn't the Prophet blamed Nott Senior's death on wine? Not that she believed a word of it, but she wasn't as naive to think the Minister sent gifts without some deeper meaning. She wondered what kind of note he had sent with it, she wondered if Theo saw the meaning in the gift of wine as well. Still, if he didn't, she'd hate to ruin his night. He was obviously starting to enjoy it, very much so by the smile creeping over his lips. She gave him a curtsy before accepting his offer and moving into his arms to dance.

"Of course I will dance with you, Mr. Nott. How kind of you to ask." She gave him a polite smile, and though it was sweet and sincere, she was still worrying the thought of the Minister's gift in the back of her mind.

Lisa arrived just as the guests were pouring into the ballroom, fashionably late, as Aloysius had insisted they arrive. She looked around the ballroom quickly, trying to find Padma, or perhaps even James, if Padma had decided to drag him along. Her search was cut short, however, when she was pulled away. She had forgotten that she was stuck on Aloysius's arm for at least fifteen minutes, where she would sit through boring chatter about the silliest things. The talk of the night with Aloysius and his friends seemed to be about how "controversial" this party might turn out to be, what with the Muggle themes and all. Lisa was finally allowed to leave when she asked why any of them had attended if they were so offended by Theodore Nott's choices. Though she had asked very kindly, Aloysius knew what Lisa really meant.

Though she would hear about it later, it was all for the best. She was sure she had spotted James nearby, and, as soon as she was detached from Aloysius's arm, she was gone, walking after him as quickly as she could while still remaining casual. She finally caught up to the man, and began to reach out for his hand, but he turned before she could reach for him. It wasn't James at all, something she should have realized- the man was at least a foot shorter than James. She sighed and turned away from the man, feeling utterly ridiculous. She loved her dress, but she felt strange with her hair up as it was. She rarely ever had her hair up. Lisa walked around for a few minutes, now looking for Padma more than anyone else. She would just have to ask her whether she had invited James.

When her eyes finally landed on James, she had to do a double-take. Was it really him? Her heart skipped a beat, and, feeling very much like a silly schoolgirl, she raced after him, slowing down just a moment before she came to him. She touched his hand lightly, a small smile growing on her face.

He stilled at the feel of her hand, quickly glancing over to find the source. He had to smother a smile when he saw her. He bowed politely and took her hand in his, kissing the back of it lightly.

"Miss Turpin, you're looking elegant this evening." He glanced over to the dance floor, then back to her. "Would you care to dance? Then perhaps you could introduce me to any of your acquaintances - I'm afraid I don't have many contacts in British society."

"Thank you," she said immediately, blushing despite her efforts not to. She nodded and glanced back at the crowd as he did. "That sounds lovely, though I have to assure you, they're not very interesting."

Lisa looked back at him and smiled softly, a glint of mischievousness in her eyes. They could be alone here, and she knew Aloysius wouldn't be coming after her any time soon. "Should we dance, then?"

"A contact is a contact, no matter how codgery and dull." He smiled and extended his arm for her to take. He led her to the ballroom, noting the decor as they walked. He glanced back over at her with a smile. "Enjoying yourself thus far?"

He turned to her and gave her another bow when they reached the ballroom before extending a hand to her. He smirked a bit before sliding his hand to her waist, surpressing his temptation to move it to a less proper place.

She took his arm and followed him. "Well, it's starting to pick up a bit," she said with a smile. And soon they were dancing. The contact was wonderful, having a hard time keeping herself from moving even closer. She smiled up at him and looked away, scanning the room for Aloysius, or even Padma. She thought she spotted Padma, and as soon as she did, she distanced herself from James and made her smile go away, just in case she was too close, or if her smile indicated anything other that politeness.

"Are you?" she asked, after they had been dancing about a minute.

He would have answered if he had not been suddenly bumped into by a very angry looking blonde. He had turned to block Lisa from being bumped into and was about to turn back to her when he noticed the mark of Eminor Macula on the girl's leg. He gripped Lisa's hand tightly, not realising he was still holding onto it. If the stupid bloody girl got Auror's called, he was in trouble. He immediately began scanning the room for exits and wanted desperately to be out of the crowd of people.

"That was... interesting," he said finally before glancing back at Lisa. "Makes me want to get some air. Care to join me?"

Lisa watched the girl. Her eyes fell to the branding, and Lisa had to keep from gasping. She had never seen the branding before. To see it in person like that was horrible. She couldn't help but think of Victoria and what might have happened to her. Shame coursed through her because she knew that she was a Pureblood, and that nothing like that would ever happen to her. In that moment, she wanted more than anything to hide her face in his chest, but she couldn't look away, and she knew there was no way that she could get away with doing it.

The instant he spoke to her, she looked up at him and nodded. "Yes, please," she said quickly. She tightened her hold on his hand as well, looking away and in the direction where the blonde had been.

Oliver let go of her hand lest anyone see them and taking her properly, elbow in his, led her to the balcony, trying his best not to look so affected. He scanned the balcony and thought perhaps, if anything, he could force Lisa to apparate him to London if he had to get away quickly. There were several brooms parked near the front gate, but he knew that running around the house with Aurors on his tail was something he'd rather not chance.

Reaching the balcony, he smiled down to Lisa (as best he could, given the circumstances,) before looking out over the gardens. He sighed a bit and cleared his throat.

"That was terrible," he said softly, hoping it was a neutral statement. She'd either thing the brand was terrible or the girl was terrible, and it would help him better judge her feelings. He secretly hoped, and was rather sure, she would be an ally to him and he hated to admit it, but he'd be upset if she wasn't a Muggle sympathisers. She seemed to kind and genuine to be a Purist, but he could always be wrong.

She nodded softly and moved away from him, leaning her arms against the railing for a moment. She needed a moment to herself to think and calm down, and feel thankful that she had not brought her father along, or he probably would have been more upset than she had been.

Lisa finally turned back to him, though she didn't smile at him. She moved closer to him as she looked towards the party, but the moment she got too close, she backed away and sighed softly. "She's right though." she said softly, very quietly, in case anyone would hear- though there was nobody there to hear her.

He nodded. He touched her elbow, too afraid to make anymore contact in such a public setting. Her soft spoken words had put his search for an exit on pause and he wanted, more immediately, to make sure she was alright.

"I know," he said, in his own dulcet tones. His voice was quiet, but it was smooth and calm, and in surprisingly stark contrast with the way he felt inside. His heart was thumping in a mad beat and he wanted nothing more than to hug her. He knew she wouldn't be a Purist, he thought. He was frantic with joy and the urge to force her to apparate them away - not to escape Aurors, but to escape society and anyone who would try to hurt her, who had hurt him.

"I wish there was more we could do."

He nodded, giving her elbow a gentle squeeze before turning his gaze back through the doors and into the manor. There weren't any Aurors apparating in and no one seemed to be panicking. He sighed a quick breath of relief before turning back to Lisa once more.

She winced at the thought, but nodded. She wouldn't be able to do it, wouldn't be able to bring herself to do something like that, but she could understand why he would, and even almost admired him for his braveness.

"I don't think I'd be able to do that to myself, I'd be too afraid," she said, lowering her eyes. Admitting it almost made her feel ashamed, not only because she admitted that she would be scared, but because it reminded her that she would never have a brand. "Aloysius says you can only get it off by actually cutting your skin off. I wouldn't be able to do it. I think anyone who would do that is awfully brave, though."

He put a hand on her shoulder and stepped closer to her, dipping his head to meet her eyes. He frowned and smoothed his hand down her shoulder. "Lisa," he started and swallowed, frowning again. "Lisa, I think you are terribly brave," he finally said, after faltering several time. He had verged on stuttering, his breaths coming in a jerky manner like the erratic beat of his heart.

Lisa listened to him and then smiled, laughing a bit in disbelief. "Brave," she repeated, shaking her head. "Hardly." It took her a minute to understand what was going on, and she looked up at him with a sort of realizing look on her face that suddenly turned to shy and almost a bit nervous. Her cheeks heated up and she looked down, then looked towards the doors.

"Is this it?" she asked softly, looking up at him again, her eyes sincere and waiting, the slightest hint of excitement hidden underneath.

He wasn't sure what she meant, not at first. He stared at her, unsure, a blank expression in his eyes. It took him a long moment of searching her gaze to even register what she was referring to, and when he did realise, he flushed deeply. But, he nodded, very slowly. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath and nodded again, feeling nervous and silly and weak. He took her hands in his; he told himself to stop swallowing and clearing his throat and licking his lips like an idiot.

"I feel..." he smiled shyly. "I don't know what I feel. I've been thinking about this so much." He smiled again and chuckled softly. "You're making me feel like a teenager before a Hogsmeade weekend."

She was about to lean in and kiss him herself when he mentioned Hogsmeade. She smiled softly, almost laughing. He was so right. Hogsmeade weekends were great fun, and not just because they got to leave school and waste all the money that their parents sent them. She was about to tell him about a time at Hogsmeade when she stopped.

"Hogsmeade?" she asked after a moment, looking a little confused. "How did you know about Hogsmeade?"

"Oh, ehm, well my parents did attend Hogwarts. Just not me." He shrugged, trying to play off his slip as casually as possible. Blast it all, he thought. Of course she'd get him flustered and tongue tied and he'd make a slip like that. "My mother always told me how they met, how nervous my father was on their first real date in Hogsmeade." He shrugged again, feeling vastly ashamed of his inability to spy properly.

"I suppose it's a poor analogy, as I never really experienced it myself."

She smiled softly, kind of liking his story. It was sweet, and she couldn't help but smile a little and reach to smooth out the front of his suit, touching the little buttons.

"Oh, that doesn't matter. It's sweet," she said, pulling her hands away. She didn't want to talk about his parents, as nice of a story as it was, and as curious as she was to know what house they were in- she was sure now that they were in Gryffindor, since she suspected that he might have been a Gryffindor himself. What she really wanted to do now was kiss him, and she didn't think talking about his parents would help him along in finally doing it. "But we're not going to talk about them the entire time, are we?"

"No," he said with a smile, smiling at the sweet look on her face. He was relieved she'd believed his cover up, but more than that, he was suddenly eager to kiss her. He wanted to know what her lips tasted like, how they felt pressed against his. He took one of her hands in his and stepped closer to her, smiling wider as he did.
