Narrative
Who: Lisa Turpin and James Crotchup
When: June 11, 2000
Where: A French restaurant
Status: In progress
Rating: TBD
Summary: Lisa meets James at a restaurant to practice speaking French.

Lisa was not as nervous about seeing James as she had been before. She was positive that nothing would happen, especially after the things she had said to him in her letter. The truth was, Aloysius had hurt her, and no matter what advice James gave her, or how much she knew his opinion didn't matter, he had insulted something she loved more than anything, save for her father. He never even insulted her father- at least not out right. There were the occasional hints and clouded accusations, but never anything out right.

Despite the fact that she was sure James wouldn't want to look at her let alone touch her or kiss her, Lisa dressed up as nicely as she could and apparated close to the restaurant. She would walk the rest of the way, hopefully to clear her mind.

No, Lisa wasn't nervous. She was ashamed. There was no way he could fancy her now, not after that. Maybe it was better that way, she thought bitterly as she came upon the restaurant. Perhaps then she wouldn't feel so pained when he was finished teaching her and, inevitably, left her alone once more, with Aloysius.

Sometimes Oliver wished he could just pop wherever he wanted to go like he'd been able to before his arrest. However, today was not one of those days. If anything, Oliver yearned for a time turner just so that he could delay the journey there, go back and relive and spend endless hours traveling before he saw Lisa. He was certain that it could have taken him a month to go from Scotland to London and it still wouldn't have been a long enough period of time for him to deal with his problems.

He neared the restaurant and stopped, turning to walk in the opposite direction. He couldn't do this. He couldn't see her. She deserved a nice man - not Aloysius, but certainly not him, either. A nice man would praise Lisa's skills as a pianist and certainly wouldn't have fucked his best friend not even an hour after sending Lisa an owl. He'd been so excited, having Emilie home, having his Gram and Katie there. He'd sent a quick note to Lisa to let her know he hadn't forgotten her, in rush an exhilaration written a daring 'Are we fools?' and then before the night was over he'd gone and fucked it all up all around.

He should have never slept with Katie. He should never have agreed to meet Lisa, and here he was nearly two blocks away from the restaurant. He stopped and lit a fag, turning to glance back in the direction he'd come from. He'd have to cancel their sessions. Yes, he thought and turned back to Lisa. He'd go in, have dinner, tell her this would be their last meeting and then thank George kindly for his offer, but decline, take Emilie and disappear amongst the Muggles and never look back. He'd save Katie, Lisa - everyone - from getting hurt by his stupid decisions and everything would be alright.

He stubbed out his fag and brushed a hand through his hair, straightening to look his best imitation of Pureblooded toff as he entered the restaurant. He looked about for the familiar dark head of curls and frowned when he didn't see her. Of course he'd beat her there. He sighed in frustration before giving his name to the maitre d' and letting himself be seated. He sighed and ran a hand over his face, frustrated and resigned.

Lisa arrived fashionably late. It seemed she suddenly decided it was very ladylike to be fashionably late, or something along the lines of what her mother had taught her, and what she had unfortunately not been able to drown out. She had nothing to blame but her slow pace, her reluctance to finally open the door of the restaurant and see him. She couldn't even blame her heels, which were only little stubs. Before entering the restaurant she took a breath and closed her eyes, wishing there was a way out of this.

She had been telling the truth in her owl to James. If she canceled, it would look bad for the both of them. Her father had gotten the reservations on short notice because the owner owed him a favor. She, nor her family, would probably never be able to show their faces again in that restaurant if she were to cancel. Apparently, the restaurant had reservations months in advance, they would have been lucky to get in in late July. Along with that, she would never hear the end of it from her mother, who particularly liked that restaurant, if not for the food, then for the handsome waiters. Despite those consequences, she was very tempted to turn away and apparate home.

In one last attempt to stall her entrance, she stood aside and smoothed the skirt of her dress, but found that there was no wrinkle to smooth out. With a sigh, she entered, told the maitre d' the correct name, and was guided to her seat. Of course her eyes landed on James. She looked away quickly, positive that their eyes had not met. The maitre d' pulled out her chair. Ashamed, her cheeks darkened in color and she drew her eyes downward, never once glancing at James as she took her seat and situated herself. She hardly said a word, but greeted him, at least as well as civility asked, and quickly seemed to become engrossed in what was on the menu before he could answer her.

Oliver stilled at the very sight of her. He sat up slowly and straightened his tie. He stood when Lisa arrived at his table and frowned at her cold demeanor. God, he'd fucked up. He was sure guilt was written all over his face, as if she could see Katie and what had happened between them on Saturday, written clearly there. He swallowed softly and cleared his throat, trying desperately to get her attention without being rude - then he stopped himself. Why was he trying so hard for her? It wasn't as if he had made a commitment to Lisa; it wasn't as if they were together. Still, even Oliver, oblivious male that he was, knew he was getting into something tricky by getting intimate with two women at once.

"Hello, Lisa," he finally said, very quietly, trying his best to gage her mood and determine the reason for her silence and angry look flush.

Oh, this was foolish. She knew it was, she knew she was just making things worse. But would it have been terribly fake of her not to be embarrassed? It wouldn't be real if she went on as if nothing had happened.

After a moment she looked up and forced herself to look at his face. She couldn't read his expression, she couldn't determine what he was thinking, and she almost wished she had never looked up, because now she couldn't look away.

"I hope," she began after a moment, and had to clear her throat. "I hope I haven't kept you waiting long. I apparated further than I thought I had."

"No," he said quickly, shaking his head. "I only just arrived myself." He was so bloody torn. He new immediately this was a bad idea. Lisa was still every bit as attractive as she'd been the week before, polite and kind. He was leading her on by being here - and he'd done a hell of a lot more than merely lead Katie on. He sighed and gave the menu a glance. What was he doing here? He couldn't stop asking himself that question. He looked back up at her once more.

"Why did you come?" he blurted, immediately regretting it. He reached out his hand instantly, covering hers with his, hoping to smooth the blow of his hasty words. "What I mean is - why me? Why risk all of this for me?"

As soon as his hand covered hers, her eyes flew about the room and at the same time, she pulled her hand away from him. She knew it was a horrible thing to do, especially after everything else that had happened, but she had to.

"We can't. They know who I am," she said, trying to apologize for it. She sighed softly, thinking over his question. Honestly, she didn't know. She looked up at him, knowing he was waiting for an answer. What could she say? Finally, she gave him a helpless look. "I don't know. You don't seem like them, like those rich men. You're smart and kind. I enjoy talking to you, you're nice to me." She looked away and down at the table. "You're genuine."

He flinched as she took back her hand, waiting for her to tell him he'd lost his chance. He was surprised at the words she spoke, but he nodded his head in agreement. At least one of them had their head on straight. His eyes darted anxiously over her features as he waited for a response and though he knew he shouldn't feel the way he did, he couldn't stop the smile from spreading across his lips at her words.

"You're genuine, as well. You don't have any preconceived notions about me, and I'll admit, that's refreshing."

He was taken off guard- why would they close the restaurant? Then he remembered Emilie and France and how he'd ended up shagging Katie in the first place. Was Lisa a legimems? He made a double effort to block his thoughts before glancing at her and trying to gage her motives. So he was bewildered and thrown off once more when he net her gaze and found not a trace of subterfuge there. She was just making polite conversation and he was wrong to be so doubtful of her.

"I'm not sure. I would hate to see it come to that."

"I have no reason to doubt that it will," she said, her voice lower as to keep others from hearing her. She glanced around the room and then back at him. "Do you remember the gala I mentioned? I have reason to believe that Minister Robards is having it and inviting diplomats from wizarding Asia. He hopes to make an agreement similar to the one with France. He plans on having an Asian theme and everything. Now, I find that most offensive, but I wouldn't say a word against it. Perhaps if he offends them, they will be less likely to go with his agreement."

She bit her lip after a moment and her eyes seemed to widen. "Oh, why do I keep doing that? I know I shouldn't tell you those things, but I do." She looked a little guilty, but only for a fleeting moment. "I trust you, is all."

"I trust you as well. I know it seems bizarre, but I feel as if I could trust you with most anything." He wanted to reach out and grasp her hand once more, but he would hate hated to get her in trouble, or get him arrested again- and despite his attraction to her, he wasn't sure if she were worth prison.

"All I know for sure is that I want you. But. We must be careful. " He felt as if were two different people. Pretending to be James gave him a doorway into a world he'd never addo privvy to, and the more he stayed pretending, the more he wanted to stay James and the less he wanted to be Oliver.

At his words, she looked down at the table, blushing as she realized that she had indeed gotten her translation correct. She smiled, though, pleased with herself and him, and that he still wanted to kiss her after everything. She just nodded and reached for one of her pieces of silverware, touching the handle for a moment as if thinking to herself. She looked back up at him after a long moment, but her cheeks only darkened again. Her smile widened into a bashful smile as she pulled her hand from the table.

"Soon," she promised, meeting his eyes at last. "We eat first."

He wasn't sure he could stand to wait. James was becoming blurred with Oliver and Oliver was blurred with James and whoever he had become was more confused than ever- and he didn't think he cared anymore. He was tired of waiting around for news from McGonagall, tired of waiting for news from George. Even leaving Emilie alone for such a sport period of time was driving him mad, but being here With Lisa blurriyng his sense of what he wanted to em and what he knew he should do.

He moved his font forward, letting his ankle brush against hers. He may gave been confused, but the longer he stayed, the closer he came to being alone with her, the more sure he felt and the more stable his world seemed to become.

Merlin, was she glad there was a tablecloth on their table. She smiled even more bashfully and looked towards the door of the kitchen, wondering how much time was left. The faster the restaurant was, the faster it would be before they were alone.

Lisa was quiet for the remaining time, opting to let her ankle brush against him in return, looking as normal as she possibly could. If he looked, however, into her eyes, he'd see a bit of playfulness in there. Finally, though, the food came, and she looked over at him. For a brief second she allowed herself to look a bit excited, to let him know that she still wanted this, in case he needed some kind of reassurance. After that, Lisa ate quietly, trying to eat as quickly as she could while remaining polite and composed.

He smiled softly and nodded. He looked down at their clasped hands and brought them to his lips, giving a kiss to the back of her hand. He gazed up at her beneath dark lashes, his natural color and another part of his glamour that he hadn't thought to change. He leaned forward and took her face between his palms. He swallowed softly and gave her a reassuring smile, though it was more for him than her. He closed his eyes after a moment and tried his best to stop thinking for a moment. More than anything, all he was concerned about now was her.

He pressed his lips against hers and it was exactly what he'd hoped for. She was warm and sweet and inviting. He was sure his feelings were all largely in part to the build up between them over the last few weeks and his recent flooding of emotion, but Oliver felt as if his legs had been knocked out from under him. He smiled happily into the kiss, breaking only once to gasp a breath and whisper to her.

"Mad, mad, mad. I've never felt better."

Finally. It finally happened. They had been stopped so many times, if not by just being in Aloysius' home, than by Padma and her spying. She was sure it would never happen, but there they were, together, alone at last. The thought made her smile in the kiss. It wasn't what she thought it was, though. She had convinced herself that she would be fine with just one kiss, that she would be able to pull away and continue with her life. This wasn't the case at all. She wanted more, and she wasn't going to wait around for him to give it to her. As soon as he broke the kiss, she took a breath, listened to him, and pulled him right back to her without a word, forgetting, for just a moment, that she had to stay composed and sophisticated.

Lisa smiled in the kiss again. She remembered herself and tried to remain slightly more composed after that, though it was hard to control herself. She held herself close to him and finally pulled her lips away to take a breath, pulling back only to look at his face, looking at everything but his eyes.

He laughed softly at her eagerness and grinned at her when she pulled back. He brushed his fingers along her temple before letting go of her face and sliding his hands down and over her shoulder. He rested his forehead against hers and gave her a warm smile, trying to met her gaze. He pressed his lips to hers once more before nudging her face up with his own and looking into her eyes.

"The anticipation was enough to kill a man. I hope I've lived up to expectations."

"And then some," she assured him, smiling up into his eyes. This was the happiest she'd been in awhile, and it was a high she didn't want to come down from. She sighed happily, but it only lasted an instant more. Had she lived up to the expectations? She looked down, her smile fading a bit as she thought. Was it something she was supposed to ask? She finally looked up at him, suddenly unsure of herself.

"Did I?" she asked quietly.

He kissed her at her question and smiled when he pulled away. He nodded and just kept smiling, shaking his head softly as if bemused by her words.

"Yes, and then some." He chuckled softly and kissed her again and again, wrapping his arms about her waist and pulling her closer to him. He kissed her cheek then her temple and smiled widely, hugging her to him. "You make me feel wanted and alive, I think that's saying something, don't you?"

She smiled teasingly, stopping as if she really had to think about it. "Well, I suppose it does," she leaned in and kissed his lips again for a long, slow moment. She wondered if there was a such thing as kissing too much, and whether or not she was coming close to that mark. After a moment of considering it, however, she decided she didn't care, as long as he was kissing her back.

"I think that we should do this more often," she said, moving her arms up and around his neck. "Don't you?"

Deep down, he might admit that he didn't want it to be purely physical. What Oliver wanted, more than anything, was to be cared for - as much as he denied it. The last seven months had been terribly lonely for him and though he pushed everyone away, he really wanted to gather them all close to him. Hell, the only reason he really pushed them away was for their own protection. He couldn't protect them in a fight so he pushed them away from the danger.

He was too scared of losing those around him to endanger them by being too near them. Everyone he associated with could be found guilty of harboring a traitor and arrested and he couldn't stand that. That's why he wouldn't have a relationship with Katie, or Lisa (more than the one he was having.) That's why he'd leave his Gram's and put Emilie up at George's. He wouldn't hurt those around him anymore, not until they figured this thing out, because surely McGonagall knew what she was doing.

The thought of having to end his relationship with Lisa at only the physical level didn't sit right with Oliver and he pulled back from her embrace a bit, resting his forehead against hers. He should end it with her too, because he knew the feelings rising up in his gut had not emanated from a lower source, but from higher up. He liked the girl, fancied her really. He liked her sweet laugh and shy eyes and how she seemed to adore the pretty picture of James that he painted. Oliver sighed and kissed her cheek before setting her aright on the bench, helping her smooth out her skirts. He clasped his hands before him, elbows resting on his knees as he looked away.

"I apologise if I've gone too far."

Lisa smile, though she really wanted to ask him why he stopped. She had been enjoying it. She was sure that grabbing him and kissing him again would be a bit much, so Lisa just stopped there, where he left off, and straightened herself up, fixing her hair and taking deep breaths.

"You didn't," she said, looking over at him with a reassuring smile. After a moment she scooted closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder, reaching for his hand and kissing the back of it softly. She held his hand, their fingers locked together, a small smile on her face. "I liked it. It's only too bad that you stopped."

"I just don't want to lead you on," he murmured, pressing an almost involuntary kiss to the top of her head. "The world's on end and starting any kind of relationship, no matter the circumstances of longevity, is dangerous ground - and while you've made it clear you can fend for yourself, I'd hate to be the cause of any trouble in your life." He pulled back a bit and dipped his head to press his lips against hers.

"That doesn't mean you aren't fetching or that I don't fancy you a bit. I think I'd give just about anything to lose myself in you." He sighed and glanced away. "You're one of the most far removed people from my real life, and don't let that hurt your feelings. You know me the least out of anyone and because of that there's less chance you'll get hurt if this debacle of a Ministry passes any more laws and I have to leave."

She looked away, listening to him all the while. As he spoke, she stood up and moved towards a tree, looking up at the leaves. She might have looked as if she weren't listening, but she was, she was just doing all that she could to hide her reactions and to try to spare him from thinking her hurt her too terribly. She occupied herself by pulling a leaf from a low branch of the tree and playing with it.

Once he was finished, she turned to him with a little smile on her face. She dropped the leaf and took a step towards him. She held her hand out to him, waiting for him to take it. Her smile grew a little wider as she stared at him. "Walk with me? We've got a bit of time left before I should leave."

He didn't like the way she dodged the discussion or how nonchalant she seemed to be about it all. He frowned a bit as she walked away and wondered if she was even listening at all. He stood, but he didn't take her hand. Instead he took her by the elbow and turned her to face him fully. He started to speak but found he hadn't a clue what to say. He swallowed and started again, but came up with the same response, or lack there of. Finally he sighed and started to walk, figuring she'd follow. She'd wanted to walk after all.

Lisa forced a smile when his back was to her and waited a moment before following him. Had she angered him? She hadn't meant to, she was only trying to keep him from feeling too bad. She caught up to him after a moment walked close to him, though she didn't move to hold his hand. She walked alongside him in silence, waiting for him to say something. The longer she waited, though, the longer the silence was, and the more guilty she began to feel. She finally looked over at him, trying to read his expression.

"I heard you," she said softly, looking out over a patch of flowers. "You believe it's too dangerous to have any sort of relationship at all, and you're afraid of hurting me," she was quiet again, walking along the path laid out. She finally stopped by some lilacs. She picked a bunch of them and examined the flowers, smelling them.

"The only logical thing to do, then, is not to allow ourselves to repeat what happened today. It will be safe that way. We can be friends, but nothing more," She continued on, making excuses for why they should not continue what they were doing, feeling more and more horrible as she spoke. "It's not as if we could have a relationship, I'll be married soon, after all, and you'll be leaving as soon as my lessons are over, as there's no reason for you to stick around, unless you're fluent in another language. I fancy you, but it will go away when you do. I'm sure you would say the same."

Those words did not sit well with Lisa, though she wasn't sure why. All she knew was that she was about to cry, and she wasn't about to do it in front of him. She looked up at him for the first time since she spoke and forced another smile, trying to hide anything in her eyes that indicated anything other than kindness.

"I'm sure that all sounded horrible, and I apologize, but I think that it will be best for us," she looked down at the flowers. They became blurry and she knew she didn't have much time left. "I should be going now," she said quickly, taking her wand and letting down the wards. She looked down at the flowers again. "I'll see you at our next lesson, then. Thank you for lunch."

With that, she disappeared with a loud pop.
