Sally had plenty of dishes stored away in her cooking arsenal. Some fancy, some inventive, some extensive. But instead she chose something simple for tonight. It was a recreation of a dish she had in a restaurant in Aix-en-Provence. A hearty lamb stew, it was the perfect dinner for a cold night like tonight.
The stew bubbled in one pot on the stove, while the rice steamed in the other. On the counter, a fresh green salad waited for a Dijon vinagerette dressing to be added. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake she had made the night before, hiding away in the ice box. Few things made Sally as happy as cooking.
While the kitchen was coming together, the living room still left a lot to be desired. It didn't help that Transfiguration had never been Sally's best subject. With a better grasp, she could have made something out of almost anything. For now, there was a trunk in the middle of the floor, covered with a leftover piece of fabric. On top, appropriate plates and silverware. On either side, two large pillows. That would have to do.
Sally had just finished setting the table when she heard a knock.
