WHO: Diego Rojas (+ cameos by, like, his whole family)
WHEN: Today
WHERE: The courthouse!
SUMMARY: Diego thinks about what this adoption means to him.
Diego had never needed paperwork designated Finn as his. He hadn’t been present for Finn’s birth. He’d missed Finn’s first steps, his first words, his first day of school. He’d missed nearly half of his son’s life so far, but he’d known for years that he was his son. From the moment he met Finn, the relationship had been deeply important and special to Diego. Not just because he knew it meant a lot to Grace and because Diego planned on hanging around for a long time. It was important because of who Finn was. And Diego hadn’t wanted to just be his step-dad, like he wasn’t really a father, even though he was there when Finn graduated middle school, when Finn learned to drive, when he had his first heartbreak. He’d never let the difference - biological and legal - stand in the way, though. In all the important ways, Finn was his. Or so he always told himself. Then they’d started this journey to make it official in a way it hadn’t been before, and Diego felt a piece of his heart return and slide into place. He stood there in his stiff suit, his neck itchy underneath the shirt and tie, with Hannah on one hip and Molly holding his hand. (She had Grace with her other one.) Finn was there, and Mateo. His parents had flown in from Chicago for the occasion - they couldn’t miss it, his mama said, their first grandson! Like he hadn’t always been their grandson, right from the start. Diego understood, though, because when the judge agreed with their request, he felt a sort of finality to their family that he hadn’t realized he’d been missing. Tears sprung to his eyes as he looked around, surrounded by his family (the family Cassian never had), and Diego felt at peace, finally. They were his and he was theirs, and nothing could ever change that. |
