Who: Teddy/Drake, Natasha, Alex
What: THE BIRDS!
Where: Natasha's apartment/surrounding area
When: morning

Teddy wasn't entirely certain what had woken him up, his nose buried in the unfamiliar pillow, his hip and shoulder pressing into something hard and unforgiving. When his eyes opened, all he saw was darkness for a moment. Not his room, that much he knew for certain. After a few seconds of listening, his brain recognizing the sound of a second person's gentle breathing. His memory seemed to reassert itself then, recalling everything that had happened the night before. Natasha's place. Natasha's room. Natasha sleeping on the bed behind him. He sat up partway, his body stiff and aching in protest, though he remained quiet. His hand drifted near where his head had been, searching for the comm device he knew was here. When his fingers found it, they navigated to the button at the top, sheltering the device with the blanket he'd been using so as not to allow the light to travel too far. The last thing he wanted was to wake up his lovely host.

Seven in the morning. Seventy-five percent charge on his comm. No new military notifications.

A quick glance around the room, searching for a digital clock or any other indication that the power had come back on, came up negative. Carefully and quietly he moved, sliding up onto his feet and gently stepping toward the door. There was a notable change of temperature as he slid it open, careful not to let too much light in, or heat out as he squeezed through. He lingered, just for a second, glancing at the bed to make sure he hadn't woken her up, then quietly closed the door behind him. The apartment was cold, though not quite as bad as he might have feared. He wished he'd grabbed his longer shirt, or his socks at least, but didn't want to chance a return trip that might cause her to stir. The sounds of the weather had dissipated, and the windows seemed perfectly intact. Even from the distance he could see that the sky outside was slowly starting to lighten. Maybe the storm was actually over.

He ducked into the bathroom, testing the faucet really quick to make sure that the water was running. No frozen pipes, which was good, but no hot water. The comm device was left on the sink with the screen aimed up, illuminating the whole room. He should have grabbed one of the flashlights, but there was nothing to do about it now. He used the restroom, washed his hands, and took advantage of the bottle of mouth wash there. He drifted into the main room afterward, pulling the table away from the window and setting it back up. After, he moved to pull back one of the curtains a little, not wanting to disturb the insulation they provided too much. The streets were covered in a thick layer of white, even visible in the near-darkness outside. There were a few people outside attempting to clear walkways, or assess whatever damage had accumulated with their buildings or the vehicles below, but it looked like no one had power yet.

Letting the curtain drift close again, he moved to sit on the couch, checking the comms for any other announcements. No trams yet, but workers were being acquired to clear the streets. Progress. Good.

Natasha woke shortly after Teddy left the bedroom. The first thing she noticed was that she had a mild headache. The second, by squinting against the light of her comm, was that it was after seven. Natasha almost never slept last six thirty. She groaned, but grateful that it was Sunday, and that she had no messages from Helena yet. Setting her comm down, Natasha lay in bed, listening for Teddy. When she heard footsteps heading for the other room, Natasha finally climbed out of bed. She grabbed her robe and quietly left the bedroom to slip into the bathroom. It was dark, and a quick flip of the light switch told her that the power had yet to return.

"Wonderful," she muttered. That meant no coffee. Sighing, Natasha made quick use of the bathroom, washing her hands, brushing her teeth and fixing her ponytail. Then she slipped her robe on, tying it tight before venturing out into the living room.

Natasha found Teddy on the couch, and she half wished she had just gotten dressed. Sure, he had seen her in her pajamas last night, but she didn't have several glasses of wine in her now to make her feel okay about it. The thought of wine reminded her that she had a headache, and Natasha headed into the kitchen to grab some aspirin from the cabinet.

"Good morning," she greeted, glancing over to where he sat. "Any news?"

Teddy glanced up when he heard the door open, scrolling through the last few pages of news until she spoke up.

"Morning," he replied with a smile, pulling himself up from the couch and stretching wide. He moved toward the hall, intent on getting his long-sleeved shirt while the coast was clear, though he paused slightly once he realized what she was doing. Still, he wasn't going to draw attention to it, not certain what her disposition was in the morning, replying even as he stepped past her. "Power's out all over the city. Apparently a lot of people got hit pretty hard with the ice. Lot of building damage. Trams are still out, too. They're going around to collect emergency workers to get everything back up."

He disappeared into the bedroom, the light of his comm leading the way to his belongings, and he picked the pile up before heading back into the kitchen. "No word from the military yet."

Natasha poured some water into a glass and took a couple aspirin, drinking them down just before Teddy returned to the room. It didn't sound good outside, and she frowned, wondering how the rest of her day would go without power or even transportation. She didn't want to be stuck inside, but she may not have a choice.

"I don't have much in the way of breakfast without power," Natasha said, turning away to open her cabinets. "I have some cereal. Some fruit..." If it had just been Natasha, she might have called around to see if any coffee shops had power. "Are you going to be able to make it home?" He said there was no news from the military yet, so Natasha wasn't sure what Teddy's plans would be.

Teddy pulled the shirt on, then worked at getting his socks over his feet as he listened. He didn't want to ask for anything that would require her to open the refrigerator, considering they didn't know when the power would be back, but he was a little hungry.

"Sure, I'll take a little of either," he nodded a bit as he straightened again, already feeling a little warmer. "I can contact some people, see if they're making rounds for any military guys." He offered a light smile. "I'll be out of your hair soon. Promise. Heard anything from Mary?"

Opening the cabinet, she pulled down a small bowl and a box of corn flakes. "You're not in my hair," she assured Teddy with a small smile over her shoulder. She opened the fridge to grab the milk and strawberries quickly, not wanting to leave the door open any longer than it needed to be. "I haven't heard from Mary since last night. She's definitely still sleeping." Natasha poured the corn flakes into the bowl and then grabbed a paring knife to slice some strawberries to toss into the bowl with the cereal. "What about your family? Are they all right?"

"I haven't checked in yet," Teddy sounded a little guilty about that, thinking that he probably should have checked in with Alex too. Why hadn't he thought about either of those things last night?

His mouth opened to reply as he slipped in next to her, only for his eyes to widen and a delighted "ooo" to escape instead. He plucked a strawberry while she was distracted, smiling cheekily as he ate the end. His other hand moved out for the knife, more than willing to help, though he noted that there was only one bowl. "Not hungry?"

She didn't judge him for not checking in with his family. She hadn't contacted her parents yet either, and probably wouldn't for a few more hours. To be fair, they hadn't sent her any messages, so Natasha wasn't too worried about it.

"I don't usually eat breakfast," Natasha admitted, hesitating briefly before handing Teddy the knife to finish slicing up the strawberries. "It's usually coffee, and I'm out the door. Did you sleep alright?" It couldn't have been comfortable, sleeping on the floor. He hadn't complained, but it wasn't like there were any other options that were as safe as her room.

Teddy took the knife and went to work, though a few more pieces of strawberry were stolen in the process. At her question he nodded, chewing and swallowing before he formally replied. "I think I woke up once in the middle of the night, but that was about it. Little stiff, but not bad. Nothing a long, hot shower won't cure." That sounded amazing right now, not only for the stiffness, but the minor chill, and the fact that he'd been wearing the same clothes since last night. "How about you? Any trouble with someone taking up all the floor space?"

She was stone cold sober, but Natasha still had the unbidden image of Teddy taking a hot shower. In her bathroom. Natasha banished the image away quickly, annoyed with herself for thinking like a woman who couldn't control her baser instincts. It was probably all her fault. She should have devoted more time to a sex life.

"I slept fine," Natasha said, turning to pick up her water glass. "Like a baby, actually, but I think that had more to do with the wine. Are you sore? I have some aspirin if you need it."

"Nah, I'm good." Teddy replied, shaking his head as he tugged the bowl over, sprinkling strawberry bits on top. "Thanks for breakfast." He turned to lean against the counter, the bowl cradled in one hand as he ate with the other. He normally had breakfast this way, finding it always helped him to wake up.

"It's warmer in here than I thought it would be," he said, conversationally, as he gathered the his first spoonful. "They're working on it, so hopefully you'll actually get power soon. Bet it's cold at my place." Every main room had at least one window, and who knew if Alex had been home. He chewed thoughtfully, wondering if the pipes had frozen. That was always a pain in the ass.

"You planned well," Natasha pointed out. "Towels under the doors probably helped keep a lot of the warmth in." She drank the rest of her water, which wasn't much, and placed the cup in the sink. "Since I'm not too keen on taking a cold shower, I'm going to go get dressed. Feel free to have more if you want." Natasha gave him a small smile while motioning to the cereal bowl. "I'll be back in a few minutes, okay?" She needed clothes,a hairbrush and some make up if Teddy was going to be around for awhile longer.

"I'm not going anywhere," Teddy replied, watching her go as he gathered another spoonful. He moved away from the counter and headed into the living room, chewing as he went. It was getting brighter out, evident by the glow emanating through the curtains. He pulled back one, leaning against the wall as he eyed the street below, now able to get a better look at what the storm had left behind.

Still no lights, but the few people who he'd seen before were joined by a few others now that it was light enough to see. Two kids were climbing the white mound of a car that had been buried, despite the protest of their mother, who stood talking to what he assumed was one of her neighbors. Another spoonful went into his mouth as he watched, the corner of his lips turning up as he watched the kids start to build a snowman.

Inside her bedroom, Natasha took off her time and stripped off her pajamas. She pulled on a clean pair of jeans and a soft green sweater. Socks followed next before she walked to her vanity to fix her hair and apply a little bit of make up. Once she felt she looked presentable, Natasha picked up the blankets that Teddy slept on,folding them and placing them on her bed.

When she returned to the front room, she found Teddy by the window. "How does it look?" Natasha slipped her fingertips into the denim pockets as she approached him. "Do I want to know?"

Teddy watched Natasha go, feeling shitty and guilty and high strung all at once. He removed the rest of his clothes, folding them and piling them as neatly as possible onto the floor next to the touch, inhaled, and exhaled.

"Okay, big guy," he whispered to no one in particular as he moved to sit. "Let's try not to trash this place." As if in response, his entire body went numb. There were sparks of light pain, there and gone again, and a far away tingle as his gaze darkened and lost focus. It had hurt in the early days, still did when a change as completely unexpected, but he'd called the big guy out. When his limbs moved stretching up and away from him, it wasn't of his own accord. His tongue flickered in his mouth, now long and nearly serpentine, hunting for something. The last thought that entered his head that he was truly aware of wasn't even his, but was so distinct and familiar that it might as well have been..

The image of the most perfect, red, juicy strawberry he'd ever seen.

-----

Taste. Good taste. Strawberry.

It was the first thing Drake really became aware of. His tongue delved into all the nooks and crannies between his teeth, hunting, searching desperate for that taste, until his eyes focused and his nose went to work. Almost instantly he was at attention, laying on his stomach, limbs splayed, head erect. He didn't know this place, but the smell....He focused on the one he knew first, his nose pressing into the fabric of the Other Him's weird skin. Why had he left it here? His tail twitched behind him, brushing into something and tipping it, and his head craned back just in time to watch the object fall toward the unfamiliar ground. The twin ends of his tail caught it just before landing, and despite the fact that the shape was different than the ones he'd seen before, he recognized what it was. The light thing. With a snort, his tail placed it back on the ledge it had been sitting on, sideways. Maybe it wouldn't fall down now.

Stretching to his feet, he shook from nose to rear, careful to keep his tail in check in the tiny, unfamiliar space. There were other smells here, familiar and not. The one smell, the one he knew, was fresh this time. The Unknown Female. Did that mean she was here? Where was The Favorite?

Another smell drew him forward, compelling him even more than the curiosity that stirred at finally finding the source of the scent that had invaded the nest all those days ago. One massive clawed foot, then the other carried him into the further space. It was where the food came from, that much he knew. This nest had the big, loud box in it too, but it was the ledge to the side that he was the most interested in. Who'd left all their strawberries out? He knew he wasn't supposed to eat things off the counter, and he could smell that it had belonged to the Other Him, but The Favorite wasn't around to see.

Maybe just one.

His tongue darted out, even as his eyes focused on the place where the People smell was coming from the most, stealing one of the juicy red pieces and chewing victoriously. His eyes focused on the rest, contemplating one more, but he snorted again, pulling himself away from the ledge and toward the hall where the other smell was coming from.

Natasha didn't have a lot of time to ask Alex questions. She was given orders to give Drake, and that was that. The line went dead and Natasha stammered into the phone before sighing. Okay. Protect civilians, then soldiers. Kill the furies if they're distracted. Wait, Alex said attack, not kill. Was that the same thing? Oh god. Natasha chewed on her lip and considered calling Alex back, but then she heard movement in the living room. Movement that was not Teddy. At least, she didn't think so. How long did transformation take?

Clutching Teddy's comm to her breasts, Natasha moved cautiously toward the door. She took a deep breath and then peered out into the hallway. And then gasped and jerked back several steps. That was definitely not Teddy. There was a creature in her hallway. Teddy had said he wouldn't hurt her, but did he know that for sure? Would Drake smell fear the way other animals did? Natasha knew she needed to stop being such a chicken and do what Alex instructed, but what if she stepped into the hall and Drake attacked her? Or what if he didn't listen to her instructions at all?

God. This was why she had no desire to ever join the military. Natasha stared wide eyed at her open door, waiting to see if Drake would appear. Maybe he was just waiting for someone to tell him what to do. Natasha swallowed hard, cleared her throat and then called out, "Drake?"

The second the head poked out of the doorway, Drake ceased all movement. Even after it had disappeared again he waited, one clawed foot hovering in the air, his head tilting ever so slightly to the side to listen. Were they playing a game?

Unknown variables. Non-hostile. After all, The Favorite wouldn't have let an enemy into the nest. Potential fear response. The information caused him to sit back onto his haunches for a moment, craning his neck back to the larger portion of the nest as if waiting for backup to arrive. He scared things, that much he was aware of, but he'd always had someone there.

The sound of his name drew him onto all fours again, and almost instantly he chirped gently, conversationally in response. He crouched low as he slowly moved ahead, making a strong effort to appear smaller, more docile than he was, as he normally did when they came across the little squishy ones in the big place. At the edge of the doorway he poked his snout around the corner, sniffing before he lurched his head forward to look.

The sound Drake made caused Natasha's eyes to widen further, if possible, and she took an instinctive step back before catching herself. Honestly, she could do just about anything. She was Helena Vandermeer's personal assistant for Christ's sake. Helena had her own set of talons, even if they weren't literal. The woman could be absolutely terrifying, and Natasha barely batted an eye with fear around the woman anymore. If Natasha could survive Helena on a daily basis, was she really going to be afraid of Drake?

Natasha was debating this in her mind when she saw Drake peer around the doorway at her. "Jesus," Natasha whispered quickly before releasing a breath and then offering a small smile. Okay. Really, she could do this. Furies were everywhere, and people needed help. This wasn't the time to worry about herself. But what did she say? "We need to go outside," Natasha told Drake, taking a step forward, one hand braced cautiously. "Protect people. Um, the softer ones, like me. And if they're okay... ones like you. Like Alex." Natasha could only hope that Drake understood her. "Can we go outside?"

Drake's head tilted to the side as she spoke, and he straightened a little to listen. The words "outside" and "protect" were not lost on him, but the rest was a strange jumble of noises that he didn't quite understand. Were these orders? The Unknown Female wasn't part of the pack, she didn't have a rank, but there was no one else to differ to.

The word "outside" came again, and he snorted through his nose to indicate he understood that much. He attempted to slide his body into a smooth u-turn to head back down the hall, but realized that was impossible fairly early on. Instead he huffed, edging backward with his tail swaying, helping him navigate before he entered the larger room and twisted.

Much better.

He recognized where the entryway in, his nose aiming to the ground as he moved toward the door. The Other Him's scent was fresh here. He was momentarily detoured by the scent of the strawberries, eyeing the counter with interest, but there was no way he could get away with stealing another while the Unknown Female was aware of him.

He stopped several feet from the door, carefully sitting. Maybe the rest of the pack was waiting.

Okay, Drake was moving. Backing up. That was a good sign. Natasha chewed on her lip and then followed. She had a much better view of him once she was in the hall, and he managed to turn around. She had to open the door. Teddy said he would know what to do. Natasha slipped Teddy's comm into her free pocket and quickly moved to the front door to pull on her shoes.

"There are Furies outside," she explained, suddenly as if he would know what she meant. Natasha had no idea if he did, but it never hurt to just talk. Maybe get him used to her voice. She shoved her foot into one sneaker, and then the other. "Attacking people. Oh... no, Furies are. Not you. Don't attack people," she said quickly, looking over at the creature as she yanked her coat off the coat rack and slipped it on. "Just protect people, okay? I mean, attack the furies if you can." Oh lord, she had a newfound respect for Alex to be sure. Natasha opened the door into the hall and stepped through, making room for Drake.

Furies.

The word brought him back to his feet, watching her intently as she moved for the door. Flying. Claws. Sting and peck. Crush. Kill. He snorted once more, his feet lightly stamping into the floor. Crush. KILL. Her noises distracted him again, tilting his head to the side as he watched her put on her extra skin. He couldn't help but lean out to sniff, inhaling through his nose and his mouth.

Scent acquired.

The moment the door opened he could smell them. The flying things. He brushed past the Not-So-Unknown Female to head in the direction the scent came from, following the trail left behind by the Other Him. There were more figures in the hall, gasping and backing away as he neared. Non-hostiles. Civilians. He could smell the Things, the people, the blood. It was wrong. The scents didn't belong together. The Things didn't belong here. At least now he understood.

Orders confirmed. Furies. Kill. Civilians. Protect.

He was a smooth shadow turning the corner to the stairs, his tail floating behind him in midair as he silently made his way to the first floor. He could see them now, and something deep in his chest emitted a deep rattle, a hiss that shuddered his form from one end to the other. Still, he waited, listening for the steps behind him, ancipating the opening of the door, the freedom and the fighting that lay behond.

Natasha wanted to tell people that Drake wasn't going to harm them, but he was moving so quickly that she had to jog to keep up. She slowed only briefly, when Drake hissed, but he didn't seem threatening, at least not to her, so she pushed past him to open the door outside. The air was cold, the snow crunching beneath her shoes. Why hadn't she grabbed her boots? And Natasha moved out of the way so Drake could get out and do his thing.

Her eyes scanned the street, looking for any sign of Alex.

The instant the door opened, all that was left of Drake in the hallway was a draft in his wake. He barreled from the entryway and into the snow, sending waves of white up on either side of him as he practically dove on the nearest creature. As his simple mantra had warned, the bird clawed and screeched, only to be abruptly silenced by the sickening snap of its neck. Drake thrashed for good measure, the last throw causing the carcass to sail several feet into the center of the road.

The two others that had been perched nearby were joined by a third, and the trio zeroed in on him. He reared at the first, stretching his body up on his hind legs, seemingly plucking the creature out of the air in an almost humanesque maneuver of one limb. Instead of drawing it toward his mouth to finish it as he'd done a moment before, he slammed down onto all fours with all of his weight behind it.

The remaining birds swooped in on his head, pecking and scratching, and the three of them became a swirling mass of feathers and scales. The larger of the two kept up its bombardment for several seconds before abandoning ship, fleeing upward to the safety of a lamppost, screeching at him. The other hobbled away with a broken wing, and Drake, his face slightly battered, skulked after it at an easy gait before scooping it up with his tail. Alive and flapping, it was jettisoned up at its friend, who zipped away just in time. The unfortunate projectile landed with a heavy thud on the roof of a nearby vehicle, and was still.

Drake snorted with satisfaction, his eyes hunting the skies for more combatants, but the remaining birds were keeping their distance. He paced, hissing and roaring, brandishing tooth and claw. daring them to move, before his attention moved to the group if humans across the street.

Safe, he tried to relay, though the sound that left him was a nothing but a supportive-sounding series of chirps. Come. Safe.

The van drifted against the ice and snow, raising up a cloud of white as it came to a halt not too far from the action. Alex voiced her thanks to the driver, who drove off on his way to where he had originally been headed to, and looked up to the sky to see still quite a few birds flying around. Drake had obviously taken a few down already, however, and a hint of pride couldn't help but swell in her gut as she ran to the civilians he was obviously trying to coax inside the building.

"Come on, he's a friendly, it's okay. Come on inside where it's safe." She urged, pulling the more hesitant ones of the group one after the other before rushing to stand beside Drake. She projected her own pride in his direction, telling him in abstract that he had done good, showing her thanks. Just off to the side of the building entrance was Natasha, and the look on her face filled Alex with all kinds of sorrow. This had been traumatic for herself, let alone the poor woman.

"You okay Natasha?" She called out, one hand laying on top of Drake where it was softer. A smile of encouragement came over Alex's lips. "You did great, thank you!"

Natasha didn't really know what to do after Drake took off into the sky but watch. It was both fascinating and disturbing to think that was Teddy. Not completely, but partly, right? She wasn't entirely sure. Even so, she stayed out of the way, her eyes on the sky until a van pulled up nearby. Natasha felt relief when she saw Alex depart from the vehicle.

As Alex approached, Natasha offered the woman a faint smile. "I'm fine." Honestly, she wasn't sure how to respond. She didn't do great. All she did was hesitantly toss out a few orders and hope the creature understood what she was saying. Natasha motioned to Drake. "Will he be okay?"

The arrival of the Big Beast drew Drake's attention immediately, and he was somewhat aware of the fact that a few of the furies had taken flight as well. The majority remained, watching and waiting, as if intent to see what would happen, if their temporary territory would be restored to them. A familiar voice caused him to perk, his head tilting to the side as his tail swayed of its own accord. The Favorite! The Favorite was here!

He chirped pleasantly in her direction, though he didn't move from his post even as she neared. When she relayed pride, he answered in return with a pleased grunt, twisting his body around her to rub lightly even as he returned back to his former position afterward. His head nuzzled the hand even as his eyes focused on the enemy, though when other female spoke up he craned his neck to see.

Strawberries. He relayed to The Favorite, his mouth opening and closing. Strawberries good. Fury taste bad. Who? His pointed his nose in the female's direction, sniffing at the air. Pack? Alpha? Was in the den. Remember. Strawberries good.
