WHO: Ariadna & Marlow
WHERE: Not far from the gingerbread house
WHEN: Nov 4th
WHAT: Children will look to you for which way to turn
WARNINGS: talk of child death but nothing graphic, tbd

Getting to work in the gingerbread house had been a blessing for Ariadna in the way that it drew children right to her door. But unlike the witch of that old story, Ariadna posed them no danger and wanted only to spoil them however she could.

She had known since her mid-twenties that she couldn't have children of her own and it had been a slow process of coming to accept that, even if it was with great bitterness. She knew, if given the chance, she would have done anything for a child of hers. So although she had questionable morals when it came to adults, she had always felt a great need to protect children.

During the Wild Hunt, this was proving difficult. The simple fact was that no one who entered the circus was going to leave it, and many of those people were so very young. There was nothing to be done except try and make their end as painless as possible.

And so Ariadna became the quintessential gingerbread witch. She walked the circus grounds and found frightened children that others had no yet claimed. She crouched down to them and, with calming magic spilling out her fingers, she offered them her hands and magicked sweets. She led them through the chaos and back to her cottage to put blankets around them and promise that their parents were coming for them soon.

She took them in her arms and gave them cake to eat, stroking their foreheads as they died peacefully and quietly, without pain or sound, growing heavy in her arms. She lay their bodies in hidden kitchen at the back and then began the process again.

She had only cried the first two times.

Now she was out again, walking in her candy dress through the chaos to find the next lost little one.

Marlow couldn't think of a nightmare that compared to the real life horror of the Wild Hunt. She couldn't really think at all. Ice hung off her frostbitten thoughts, harsh as the chill that lashed her cheeks and chewed through the layers of her clothes. Right to the bone.

She was very lucky that it wasn't hers sprawled out there on the ice.

For the most part, she kept to the safety (and she used that term very loosely) of the shadows. She was tired, but she'd found a mangled body in her trailer the first night and she didn't feel much like sleeping after that. Now, she wandered, hoping to find someone alive--even better, someone she recognized.

Her heart would've jumped with joy if it could at the sight of the candy dress.

"Ariadna?" she quietly called out, afraid of what she might draw out from the darkness.

Hearing her name, Ariadna turned with an expression of surprise and concern. She thought she knew who that voice belonged to. And- yes, there she was, young Marlow, out here in all the madness!

She turned fully to move back towards the girl, taking her hand just like all the other children she'd been trying to protect tonight. "What are you doing out here?" she asked her, shaking her head. "You should be staying safe inside."

Should, being the operative word. Marlow could only let out a laugh, a puff of hopelessness materialized into a smoke of ice. "Curiosity beat out logic," she said. "I'm not proud of it." The complete opposite, actually. Ariadna had warned her to be careful before this, but it still very much applied here now. She had no place in this hunt, no way to protect herself if something were to happen.

That, plus the stress of the past several days and of the ones ahead, put a knot in her chest. She squeezed Ariadna's hand and shuffled closer to her. "Have you seen Margo?" she asked hopefully. They had planned to stick together, but somehow lost each other in the chaos.

Ariadna had to think about who Margo was, a name slightly familiar to her but belonging to someone new. One of Maddy's new sisters, she was almost sure. "I haven't," she told Marlow, drawing her closer, putting a protective arm around her. If anyone was watching, it was good to look possessive. And of Marlow, Ariadna was possessive.

"Come," she said, drawing her quickly back the way Ariadna had come. "We are going back to the cottage."

She kept her gaze moving as they walked, not too fast as to draw more attention, but steadily. Inside the gingerbread house, the public area was made up to look like a 17th century cottage, rocking chairs and fireplace and tables - but far more of it surprisingly edible. Ariadna closed the door and then cast a simple locking charm on it. It wouldn't keep out even the simplest of magic users, but it was something.

Ariadna sat Marlow down gently in front of the fire and said, "you are safe in here now. Do you want something to calm your nerves?" she reached into her pocket and drew out some of the candies she had been giving to children. She was glad Marlow couldn't see into the kitchen were the dead children lay.

Marlow hadn't realized she'd been crying on the way to the cottage until the fire put warmth back into her cheeks. Trails of tears, salty and cracked dried over her freckles. She wiped them away and nodded, taking the offered candies.

"Thank you," she murmured, quiet for a long time while she tried to recompose herself first without them. But the knot grew bigger, pushed against her lungs until her eyes misted over again from her trying to draw in a difficult breath. Terror rippled through her, threatened to curl its fingers around her throat. She put one of the candies in her mouth before it could and let the magic do its work.

"I haven't slept." As if that at all explained how close she'd just come to a panic attack, and not the unspeakable horrors she'd witnessed. She sniffed and shook her head. "I don't think I want to."

Ariadna watched the young woman settle a little as the magic in the candy took over. Then she put her arm around Marlow and drew her close. "Mały marzyciel," she whispered softly, kissing the top of Marlow's hair. "This is never something you should have had to see."

This hunt - the humans should have been kept safe from the whole idea of it. They were delicate, and young, and Ariadna how many were going to have mental breakdowns because of it.

She leaned into Ariadna's warm comfort, closing her eyes as she sighed, feeling the panic melt away with it. "It's my fault," she murmured. "I don't know why I thought I needed to see this or what I was out there to prove." Watching helpless people's lives get ripped away from them in some of the worst possible ways wasn't exactly on her To-Do list, but it now belonged to the list of things she would never forget.

Slowly, Marlow opened her eyes again and ran her fingers over the colorful candies embroidering Ariadna's dress. The witch's skill and creativity never ceased to amaze her, or make her smile. "Did you go to the Coven ritual?" she asked.

"Shhh," she murmured. "Blaming yourself will do you no good. What's done is done and now all we can do is keep you from having to fear anymore." She ran her hand through Marlow's hair. "You can remain here for the rest of the hunt with me and we'll wait it out."

This idea came with two problems.

1. Corpses. The kitchen was piled with children's bodies that Ariadna really didn't need Marlow to see. She had planned to dispose of them later but now maybe it was going to have to be sooner. She could, she considered, just toss them out the back door and hope someone who ate bodies came along. (Sentences like that had once been strange to Ariadna, but that had been a long time ago.)

2. Food. There wasn't exactly anything for Marlow to eat that wasn't almost entirely made of sugar. Ariadna, only eating like that, didn't keep anything healthy or filling around. Usually people just dropped in for their sugar high and nothing else. But this problem could be solved as well - she could leave long enough to go get food from somewhere.

Knowing exactly what had happened at the ritual, Ariadna was a little reticent to answer Marlow's question, but she didn't let it show in her voice. "I did, yes."

Without asking for details, Marlow simply nodded. For her sanity's sake, it was likely for the best that she didn't ask anymore questions about it, and to fill in the blanks with something she could wrap her head around. Like witches dancing around the cauldron, singing double, double toil and trouble! and making mystical fire tall enough to kiss the moon.

"Thank you," she said, more than grateful for the woman's offer. There was no way she could handle another second outside, she didn't have the energy. Where else could she even go? Marlow was safe with Ariadna. The woman was probably the first person she'd come to trust since she'd joined the circus. After awhile, a small smile worked its away across her tired face.

"Forewarning, I might ask you to show me how to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie."
