"Shhh," she murmured. "Blaming yourself will do you no good. What's done is done and now all we can do is keep you from having to fear anymore." She ran her hand through Marlow's hair. "You can remain here for the rest of the hunt with me and we'll wait it out."
This idea came with two problems.
1. Corpses. The kitchen was piled with children's bodies that Ariadna really didn't need Marlow to see. She had planned to dispose of them later but now maybe it was going to have to be sooner. She could, she considered, just toss them out the back door and hope someone who ate bodies came along. (Sentences like that had once been strange to Ariadna, but that had been a long time ago.)
2. Food. There wasn't exactly anything for Marlow to eat that wasn't almost entirely made of sugar. Ariadna, only eating like that, didn't keep anything healthy or filling around. Usually people just dropped in for their sugar high and nothing else. But this problem could be solved as well - she could leave long enough to go get food from somewhere.
Knowing exactly what had happened at the ritual, Ariadna was a little reticent to answer Marlow's question, but she didn't let it show in her voice. "I did, yes."
