Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Kennet, Margaery
What: Ringmaster lecture in 3...2...1...
When: October 19th, very early morning
Where: Kennet's trailer
Rating: Probably low!

It was creeping into the wee hours of the morning before Margo had been willing to tear herself away from her sisters. It had been too long since she had seen them, and there had been so much to talk about. There still was – not the least of which was the Cirque itself. The place was crazy, an insane place for her to have turned up. It was even crazier that she had signed on, contracting with invisible Management in order to stay with her family.

She wanted nothing more than to find her trailer and tumble into bed. But there was something that she had neglected earlier, and it pulled at her thoughts – meeting the Ringmaster didn't seem like the sort of thing that she ought to put off any longer. She could only hope that he would understand her delay.

With the crowds thinning, it was easy enough to be pointed in the right direction by other employees. Soon, Margo found herself rapping gently on the door of a trailer.

Kennet had been well aware of the latest Kemp sibling arrival and her lack of following directions to go to his trailer directly after she signed on. It really did not surprise him, knowing the oldest Kemp girl and meeting the youngest a couple days earlier. Having removed most of his makeup he wore around his eyes for the Big Top shows, and the belt of his costume, he had stopped changing a few minutes before Margo tapped on his door. The warning of her arrival coming when she made the decision.

Opening the door, the Djinn took up the entire doorway. His six foot five, lean form barely fitting in the space of a trailer entrance. The gold and black ringmaster outfit accentuated his height further. "You are late," he said simply and then turned from the door to allow her to walk in on her own. He gestured to the booth table near the door for her to sit.

Crossing his arms, he leaned against the small counter of his personal bar while watching her. His eyes taking in every bit of information her soul had to give.

When the door opened, Margo's eyes flicked up – and she took an involuntary half-step back. The Ringmaster was just as imposing as his title, much taller than the redhead and dressed in black-and-gold. He looked familiar; it took her a moment to realize that she had seen him on the grounds – that she had asked him for directions when she was looking for her sister.

Late. Blinking, Margo followed after a few seconds, nudging the door closed behind her. She took the seat that he gestured to, sliding into the booth-style table, only to find that he was just... looking at her. He was an intense sort of guy, radiating a sort of power that made the mostly-human girl fidget a little.

"Right. Late. I'm sorry about that, I was just... I just wanted to find Maddy. I thought she was waiting for me, and... thanks. For the directions. I won't be late again." Margaery pressed her lips closed before she devolved into full-on babbling. The way he looked at her was unsettling – like he could see right through her. Not that any of her secrets were all that interesting in the grand scheme of things.

"I am aware of what you wanted, Mrs Hall," he replied after she had finished. "And that you were the cause for her missing her show. I suspect that will not happen again." He paused. His ice blue eyes continued to investigate her before he stood up and set a drink on the table in front of her.

"There are a few things that need to be gone over, starting with where your job assignment will be. I have you placed, but if you have any suggestions you wish to give, I will hear them." That did not mean that he would accept them, but it was told to him that employees felt more at ease if they had some say in their place at the Cirque.

Margo felt her cheeks flush, color rising in them – not just because she felt guilty about making her sister miss her show, but because he had called her by her married name. A name that he had no business knowing. It had been in the contract she had signed – but Kennet had not been present there. No one had. Perhaps the contract had gone to the Ringmaster when it disappeared?

"No – of course not," she faltered a little, glancing down at the table before her. Margo was tempted to press her fingertips to the top of it, to drag them along the surface and gather the memories from it – if only to try and assure herself that the Ringmaster wasn't always so intimidating. She would have been pleased to see visions of him sitting at the table with friends or a lover, something to make him seen less... cold.

In the end, though, she kept her hands in her lap, folded there neatly. "Oh. I wouldn't even know where to start? I guess... I mean, I can give readings? I'm not sure if people would like that sort of thing." She only lifted her hand in order to take the offered drink.

"Would you be able to handle doing readings?" He asked, nothing in his expression giving away what thoughts might be in his head. Any attempt, on accident or on purpose, to pick up telepathic thoughts would find themselves at a volcanic mental wall keeping them out. "Or would you become inundated and cause further trouble to our patrons?"

It was not that the Ringmaster cared at all for the patrons- they were a means to an end- but much like when the dragon drank herself into causing a disturbance, the atmosphere of the Cirque had to be just mysterious enough to the humans for them not to notice some of their kin missing.

"But you could be the Seer's assistant if you wished."

Maybe there was nothing in his expression or tone, but Margo read something into it regardless. There was a little frown that flickered across her lips – a response to the idea that doing readings would be too much for her. That, somehow, she would not be able to handle it. Worse, she had to consider that this might be true. She had developed her gift as much as she had needed to, enough to get by... but had she pushed herself hard enough to only give readings?

"I don't... I don't know how I feel about being a Seer's assistant. Is there something else? Something different that the circus needs?"

"If not her assistant, it might be wise to see her about training yourself further, if you would like. Or I am sure there are others who would allow you to push your gifts further to be comfortable in this setting." For as little as Kennet thought of humans, even gifted humans coming from a gifted family- save one- did not have the training to handle many of the circumstances readings might bring. Even her sister sought training from the Mentalist witch to strength herself.

"I had initially set aside one of the shops to be attended to by you." He tilted his head to the side, turning away from her and walking the one stride of his long legs it took to get back to his bar. "A jewellery shop, not far from your sister's performance tent and across from your younger sister attending the Tea Shop. So there is no need for long interruptions."

Margaery nodded at the suggestion; there was little else she could do. It was simple enough to gather that the Ringmaster was running the show – he seemed well-suited to it, honestly. Tall and imposing, a cold and stoic sort of handsome. If he had been less intimidating, he would have been attractive... but he was intimidating, enough to quash evedn Margo's natural flirtatiousness. "Of course. I'll ask for her help as soon as I get my bearings."

The redhead's brows went up at the mention of a shop, a jewelry shop, no less. Maddy had been right; Kenney had an excellent idea of what to do with the newest Kemp to join his show. "I could do that," she was quick to agree, the smile breaking across her lips a clear sign of delight at the idea. "I collect things. Jewelry. With stories, things that don't need to just float around, and... you already know all that, don't you? I should probably just stop. Right."

"Of course." He nodded to her getting her bearings first. While most of the employees were extraordinary in nature, he did not expect them to automatically know everything about the Cirque and the placement of each thing. From what Kennet saw when looking into Margaery, the choice to be here had not been entirely planned and joining them a decision she made on the whim.

The stoic facade broke for a moment as a quick quirk of his lips flashed at her sudden excitement. It did not last though as he went back to the business at hand. "Excitement is a sign of someone who will do the job correctly, Mrs Hall. You are fine. We have some such items you may go through, as well as the collection that you will be selling, and you will be given a budget to collect more at each stop."

He sighed, looking her over once more. "As with each employee, you will be given costumes to wear for your shop. Modern clothing breaks the illusion."

Uncrossing his arms, he set them on the edge of the bar. "Do you wish to go over the rules of the Cirque or has your sister already informed you of them? I know you have already received your key to your trailer as well and I could show you where it is if you wish." The Ringmaster had many things he could be doing, one of which involved his meditations, but he made the same offer to each new employee. Most did not take the offer as they wished to get out of his presence as quickly as possible.

Extraordinary meant something different in the Kemp family than in the rest of the supernatural world. Margaery might have known a fair amount about her own gift and something about those belonging to the rest of her family, but there was still a lot that she didn't have even an inkling of. There had been no need to, before – she had been able to stay mostly in the realm of 'normal people', except for her readings.

Now, as part of the circus, she already felt a little out of her depth. The little twitch of Kennet's lips, though, made her feel a bit better. Just a bit. Margo's smile was a little wider, and came with a dip of her head that might have been agreement. She had every intention of doing a good job. The only bit that took her by surprise was the mention of costuming, which perked one ginger eyebrow. She had seen one or two of the circus' costumed ladies – surely she wouldn't be dressed like that?

"Costumes. Right." Best to wait and ask Maddy more about that. "I think Madeline hit the high notes... not to be late for work, not to hurt anyone, not to be out too late on Moving Days..." Her key was still tucked into her pocket. "Did she miss anything? I mean, anything too big? I don't want to take up your time..."

"Many things," he said slowly. "My time is not being taken up as this is part of my job, Mrs Hall."

"As you may have noticed or have been informed otherwise. There are many creatures amongst us with many abilities that may not settle right with someone new, but be assured that our number one rule here is that no one is to hurt other employees." He paused, tilting his head with a serious look. "As your sister has informed you so simply."

While Maddy had been with them for some time, thinking things, like not to be late for work, were all the necessary prep a new employee needed seemed like she might want her sister to make a mistake. Kennet, obviously, knew that was not the case but the simplified version echoed back at him from the middle Kemp would have made others wonder.

"No matter your feeling on the subject Human patrons may be fed on, as that is natural for many creatures here. Do not interfere with feedings unless they are causing unwanted attention, and then you must go to Security. On that subject, all turning of any human must be cleared with me first. Though I doubt you wish to lose your abilities for those of such other creatures."

He stood straight once more, folding his hands behind his back and looming over her seated form. "I am the end of all discussions and decisions, as I am the only one who communicates with Management. If you have a problem, feel free to send me a message on our network or find me on the grounds.
But do not question or argue with any of the specialized rules I may give out depending on the feeling in the area we stop in about our presence. Do you understand that?"

Margo blushed a little, just the tops of her cheeks flushing. Her sister'd had more to say than what she'd blurted out, of course – it had just been a long day and she was eager to find her trailer. At the same time, though, she knew that the Ringmaster's rules were something she needed to hear. They were bound to be important, especially since he took them so seriously.

There was a slight widening of the girl's eyes as he went on – about creatures with different abilities, the fact that the human guests were expected to be snacks, that she shouldn't interfere with such feeding. The idea that she might agree to be 'turned' at the hands of one of these other creatures raised Margo's eyebrows, and she gave a slight (but adamant) shake of her head.

No, she had no interest in being something else.

"I understand... I think I can handle all that." At least she hoped she could; the contract had already been signed. "Madeline said we would be leaving soon..."

Most humans had a similar reaction to the rule about interfering with the feeding habits of other employees. Many did not know the extent of the creatures collected on the grounds, though non-gifted humans received a different version of that rule, but they would learn eventually. Kennet had expected such a reaction from Margaery and the shake of her head only proved his statement to be true.

"We will be. Tomorrow. Finish anything you wish to do here in Detroit, but your shop will be open tonight." He leaned against the back of the other side of the booth and inspected her again. While he did not read minds in the way a telepath would, his could read reactions and studied further secrets of their soul to know if they truly understood the rules.

"Do you wish for me to show you to your trailer?"

Anything she needed to do in Detroit? Margaery waited a moment to see if he was kidding – the Cirque Nocturne had been her only reason to come to Michigan at all, much less Detroit specifically. He knew that; something just told her he did. Honestly, Margo thought that if she asked, he would have known a lot of things about her... such as the fact that her divorce wasn't quite finalized.

"I'll make sure it's ready," she agreed, resisting the urge to twirl her hair around her fingers. "But I don't have anything to do in Detroit. I came here for Maddy. And for you, I guess." A pause. "Like, a general you. You the circus, not you you..." There she was again, at that place where she ought to just stop. Margo took her own advice without saying anything, this time, except for a little sigh.

"Yes. Please. It's been a weird night..."

Kennet raised a brow at her fumbling over her words and waited for her to finish. Without a word he stood up and opened the door gesturing for her to be the first one out. "If you have any issues, you can usually find me at my trailer. I do present shows at the Big Top, but no matter where I am on the grounds I can tell when someone is here. That said, you should not bother me with small matters."

Outside of the trailer, a path twisted down an empty section of the village. No trailers were ever set next to his and he would always be found down the path to the left. The only things lighting the path were indistinguishable soft floating amber orbs. Each long stride he took a graceful move, Kennet walked with his hands behind his back and his simple clothing flowing in the light breeze off the water.

Every trailer had its own personality that spoke of the people that resided within them. No two were alike and every time new people signed their contracts a new one would appear at random. Few knew where they would appear, but Kennet could always direct them to their new homes.

Stepping up to a trailer, he gestured to it. "Across the way is young Miss Kemp and the older is just down the way. Do you have any further questions?"
