Eventually sitting inside had gotten to be too dull a task for Alice. She had her own, small residence of sorts, and her mistress didn't lock her inside. Therefore, the girl assumed through use of logic for once that she must be allowed to walk the grounds of the estate as well. Just listening to the songs of the birds in the forest was not longer enough. She longed to feel the grass and earth beneath her feet and to touch the trees again. She knew that she was a bird caged for a reason, but she would return to her cage once she'd gotten a taste of the fresh air.
At least, that had very much been her intention when she'd started out on her walk anyway. Now, she was hopelessly lost and off the main path. None of the trees looked familiar, and she couldn't even see the buildings of the Hale Estate anymore. She frowned, heaving a heavy sigh as she realized that Laura was probably going to be furious. She wondered if there would just be yelling involved or whippings as well. For the time being, Alice figured it was best to keep on walking until she found a place she could go to for help.
A large cabin eventually came into sight, beautiful against the backdrop. Alice approached it from the side, curious and cautious as though there might be something off about it that she didn't see just yet. She didn't stop to think how strange she must look, a girl in a short, white dress barefoot and carrying her black, heeled ankle boots in hand as she walked up to the front door, knocking on it. Surely someone would be inside who could help.
