Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Characters: Calvin Ryan and Harrison Boot
Setting: About 9:30 PM, Axis City University
Content: Work Safe
Summary: Cal and Harrison meet one another

Cal enjoyed his Philosophy of Law class, although he'd never quite been able to put his finger on why. He disliked the fact that he had to memorize the date of every case they studied, he could never keep the names of the court Justices straight, and, of course, it didn't help that the professor's voice remained in a constant monotone. Still, something in his gut made him return to that classroom every Tuesday evening, and years of experience had taught him that it was generally better not to question his gut, particularly on matters of enjoyment. So return he did, and with his homework always completed even though he knew it would never receive a grade. If he were a real college student, he mused, he'd be doing much better than the slackers around him who would sleep in class and write notes to one another in the margins of their case summaries.

He packed up his books slowly, as he did every night, puzzling about the meaning of justice. How could something that was supposed to be so static hold so many different interpretations? He shook his head wearily as he slung his beaten-up messenger back over his shoulder and ambled out of the classroom. He wasn't naive enough to believe that the world operated in black-and-white terms, but the idea that the morality of the whole world was painted in shades of grey unnerved Cal.

This thought, however, was abruptly cut off as he slipped on a wet patch in the floor and crashed unceremoniously onto it. He sat there for a few seconds, blinking and surprised, now on eye-level with the sign that warned "Caution! Wet Floor." It was a sign that Cal had put there himself before class had started. He couldn't help but chuckle at the irony.

Harrison didn’t do much for himself. Usually, well always, his life was based on what Rachel needed, wanted, and even thought about wanting. A college class was fun for the blond, and all he wanted was to get a good score and know a little more about the major and career he’d given up years before to be Rachel’s helper. Dressed in casual clothes for the first time since the last class Harrison listened intently to what the teacher said as he took meticulous notes. His eyes would occasionally drift to a brunette man with an older bag and a dimple before snapping back to attention.

As the class let out, Harrison stood and walked out slowly, taking his time to pack up and make sure he had his car keys in his hand as he got out, his black jeans and dark green shirt almost molding him with the sky around him. The sight of the other man falling down surprised him, and he walked to the other man right away, walking around so that he was facing Caleb, a hand out. “Are you alright? Hurt anywhere?” he asked right away. Harrison had a handsome smile and looked too old to be a student- in fact, he looked older than Caleb.

"That was a nasty spill," he commented, trying not to smirk or laugh a little bit- it had been a little funny to just see him drop.

"Why thank you." Calvin responded politely, gratefully accepting Harrison's help back to his feet. "I'm fine. It's just my pride that's taken a bit of dive." He stepped carefully away from the slippery area before dusting himself off and he looked ruefully at the sign. "I should've seen that coming." He said, a bit self-reproachfully. "Thank you for your help."

Harrison chuckled at that, helping him up before taking his hand back. "Well, I won't tell anyone, how about that?" he offered. Calvin was handsome, he'd give the lad that. But he seemed like just a cute law student and a little too sweet faced to be one of Harrison's conquests. His interest might have been lost, if the other man hadn't actually apologized- a rare thing in Axis.

"For that I would be most grateful." Calvin said, smiling. "I really must learn to be more careful. I put the sign there in the first place! You'd think I'd have learned by now." He shook his head. "I suppose I was born without the elegance gene. Assuming that there is one." He seemed to muse on this for a brief moment, and then suddenly thought of something. "Oh! How rude of me. My name is Cal Ryan. And you're... he looked at the man for a moment, trying to correspond the names that the professor called every week with the faces that answered him. "Harrison... something. Yes?"

"Harrison Boot," he said right away, shaking the other's hand as he helped the other up. "You're a law student, I'm guessing?" he asked, blinking. It was unfortunate that Cal seemed so very sweet- that and that he was most likely a future lawyer (a species he tended to avoid). "You're one of the very few who seems to stay awake".

Cal laughed lightly, a bit flattered that Harrison would mistake him for a real student. Although... he supposed that was not such a bad assumption, considering that he was the right age to be a student. "No, no... actually, I'm just on the janitorial staff. I audit all my classes, which is why my name isn't technically on the register. I'd love to take classes for real, but I'd never be able to afford it. I enjoy the classes though! At least that's something." Cal shifted a little. He didn't usually think about his financial situation, or that it would be nice for him to actually take real courses. But clearly that's what he did think, otherwise he wouldn't have said it. Ah well. Perhaps someday.

Harrison felt a bit bad for the other's speech and what not, but that faded away damn fast as he smiled and put his hands into his pockets as he looked at the shorter man. "Well, you seem to do well in class- not an audit wasted, right?" he said, trying to sound more jovial. Being so financially secure himself, Harrison was always a touch awkward in these situations- after all, Rachel would always need him. He'd never have to look for work else where.

[No problem!]

Cal smiled a little, but his eyes were preoccupied. He knew he'd have trouble sleeping tonight (but then again, when didn't he?); it was high time for him to reassess his goals. It bothered him that his life didn't seem to be going anywhere, even though that wasn't really his fault. There wasn't a lot he could do with a permanent black mark like a schizophrenia diagnosis on his record.

He sensed the other man's awkwardness, but Cal certainly didn't blame him for it. Harrison wore good clothes and he could afford to take night classes "for real," so clearly he was better off than Calvin was, at least financially. "No," Cal agreed. "It's not a waste. At the same time, though, it's not completely my thing, either. I like our conversations about the nature of justice, but was never one for names or dates. That stuff goes right out of my head."

Harrison laughed at that, agreeing. "Yeah- I take them mostly for fun, but I like to think that one day I'll be able to whip out a name or case to help my boss or something," he said with shrug as he put his back pack higher up on his shoulder and rubbed the back of his neck. "I'd offer a coffee, but everything seems to be closed," he offered with a shrug, not really sure what else he could say at that point. Usually, his dealings with people were quick calls on his boss's behalf, and that was it.

Cal smiled, appreciating the offer more than he could put into words. It was rare that anyone, even anyone in his circle of friends at work, would invite him for coffee or anything similar. "I have coffee at my place." Cal offered gingerly. "But you're probably too busy." Harrison struck Cal as a hard worker, so he guessed that this conjecture was accurate. "Still, I appreciate the offer, and mine stands."

Harrison thought about it, and as much as coffee would be nice right then, he knew that sleeping so that he wasn't half dead the next day was more important. Work made him money, which let him pay for things like his mother's care, food, and nice suits. He smiled and looked at the other. "Next time maybe? I should go home and be good," he said with a charming smile, half flirting with Cal as he took out his folder and pen, writing something down on the corner of a page. He ripped it out, handing it over. "This is my personal number- I don't answer it between around 8 and 4, but I check messages from time to time".

Cal smiled. Had he just made a friend? He'd made friends before, of course, but recently they had almost all been in the context of work. "Thanks Harrison!" He said happily. "For future reference, I owe you a cup of coffee. And thanks again for helping me up."
